@BDair The official US COVID-19 death toll, as 9f mid -May, 2021, is over 585,000. The actual death toll is much higher. Most victims have been elderly or had preexisting conditions. But not all. Many young, healthy people have succumbed to this virus. And many survivors have terrible symptoms that go on and on, with no end in sight. It is definitely worth the effort to get vaccinated, if not for one's own health, then for those with whom they may have contact.

There is a huge difference between injecting an illegal street drug and injecting a vaccine manufactured under strict lab protocols and approved by both the CDC and FDA. Before you blithely dismiss the advice the health professionals, I recommend that you learn some science. First, educate yourself on the basics of the immune system. Then familiarize yourself with the field of molecular biology (that's everything to do with DNA, RNA, and the production of proteins). You could enroll in a biology class at your local junior college, or simply go to a bookstore and buy a college textbook on general biology. If you still have questions after reading the chapters on the immune system and molecular biology, just message me here. I will be happy to clarify.

Not true? This account published in the Journal of San Diego History is consistent with Michener's in every particular. THE YEAR 1588 AND SAN DIEGO DE ALCALÁ The Journal of San Diego History SAN DIEGO HISTORICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY Winter 1988, Volume 34, Number 1 Thomas L. Scharf, Editor By Thomas Case Professor of Spanish San Diego State University Images from this Article 400 years ago, San Diego de Alcalá was canonized, exactly 125 years after his death in 1463. The events which led to his canonization are a fascinating piece of history and are tied to the fate of Spanish Empire, the changes in the Vatican, and Spain’s troubles with England, which was to embark on an empire of its own. At this distance in time, we seem to have forgotten that the canonization of San Diego de Alcalá was one of the most important events of its time. San Diego became the subject of many outstanding works of art, such as the beautiful statue carved by Alonso Cano and Pedro de Mena, and the paintings executed in the seventeenth century by Murillo, Ribera, and Zurbarán. Lope de Vega wrote a three-act play on his life and miracles. More important for us, however, was the christening of the flagship, the San Diego. In 1602, this vessel, commanded by Sebastián Vizcaíno, sailed into a port previously named San Miguel by Juan Cabrillo in 1542. The crew landed on November 12 and Mass was celebrated. Vizcaíno renamed the bay and its area San Diego de Alcala in honor of his patron and for the day he had made his landing. A century and a half later, another Franciscan like San Diego, Fray Junipero Serra, founded the first of a chain of missions in Alta California on this same location. While the name for our city may seem fortuitous due to the liturgical calendar, the events which led to San Diego’s occupancy of that day were of monumental importance to the Western world. In this article, I wish to review the process which gave the Church calendar the feast of San Diego and our city its proud name. San Diego was born in the small village of San Nicolás del Puerto, about fifty miles northeast of the city of Seville.1 After living in a hermitage, he joined the Franciscan Order at the Convent of Arrizafa, in Cordoba, as an Observant lay brother. He spent some time at the Convent of San Francisco in Seville and in 1441 he was sent as a missionary to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, where he gained renown for his piety and diligence. In 1449, we find him again in Seville, from where he was sent to Rome as one of the many pilgrims celebrating the Jubilee Year and the canonization of San Bernardino de Siena. Back in Spain, he lived successively in convents in Pastrana and La Salceda, in Castile, and in 1456 he joined the Franciscan community at the new convent of ...

@David1955 I was talking about only one planet (ours). But what happens here can happen elsewhere. Isn't that a useful assumption when working out potential solutions to the Drake equation? And what we see here (admitting that the end of the story is not yet written) is that people do not en masse abandon religion, do not embrace science and reason, and do not pursue social and economic justice. So it may not be unreasonable to think that the universe is full if dead civilizations. This one is only a few hundred years old and appears headed for a cliff. But who knows? Maybe those others were/are populated by beings that were/are better than us.

I agree that the probability of ours being the only planet with life on it is vanishingly small. But until we have proof, we simply cannot say for sure one way or the other. However, I think it is reasonable to operate under the assumption that there is extraterrestrial life. We just need to remember that this is only a working assumption. Thus we protect and maintain our only reliable pathway to enlightenment: the scientific method.

We know that there is natural variation in human immune systems. It would be on these differences that any selection would act. Natural variations that confer greater ability to defeat an infection could result from mutations that affect either the adaptive or innate immune systems, or even some other biochemical mechanism that we can only imagine.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 7, 2020:
Good point. Obviously there has to be some diversity in the small group to begin with. And we see that indeed there is. In the recent documented cases of measles hitting the Orthodox Jewish communities of upstate New York, a few deaths occurred, and there were also survivors. Some individuals must have had natural resistance, while others did not. Over the longer term (over many generations), the development of even greater resistance would occur through selection of new mutations.

The dough is made from a highly refined, fine-grained flour that metabolizes very fast, causing blood glucose levels to spike. This, as we all know, leads to a spike in the insulin level, resulting in a glucose crash and craving for more sugar. Repeat the process and pretty soon you are obese and diabetic. This scenario has been played out to the extent that now America is among the least healthy countries on Earth. Way to go, Papa John!

@TimeOutForMe I think you are right to discount the conspiracy theory. The idea that China "created" this emergency is simply ridiculous. That the virus originated there is purely a biological fact, like a hurricane is a meteorological fact. Did the governments of Guinea and Sierra Leon "create" their ebola epidemics? Of course not. The wild swings in the stock markets are telltale signs that many investors are just blindly gambling, and have no idea what they are really doing with their money. Really savvy investors buy quality and hold it long-term; they don't lose confidence over short-term setbacks.

@Grecio I agree the vast majority should stay where they are. But the reality is that large parts of the world, starting with the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa, are becoming uninhabitable due to global warming and war. (Americans are responsible for a a lot of that. Throughout the 20th century we produced 25% of the greenhouse gases, with only 5% of the world population!) Those people will migrate. That's what makes it so difficult to get rid of them. If they were all bad, like the polio virus, we would long ago developed a vaccine and eradicated religion from the face of the Earth. But people are attracted to the good bits and may not realize they are walking into intellectual and moral quicksand. Christianity is certainly no better than Islam. Both have at times been the rationale for unspeakable cruelty, violence, oppression, and genocide. A pox on all their houses!

IMHO It was the biggest mistake of his presidency. And there were others. But remember that after his first midterm election, after the ACA was passed, Congress went red and would not let him pass any legislation. @jorj You are right about one thing: the U.S. did become the biggest oil producer during the Obama years. But that growth in oil and gas extraction during the Obama administration had more to do with the introduction of a new technology (fracking) and high oil prices than anything the government did. Meanwhile, Obama was investing in green technologies and supporting the efforts of the EPA to protect our air and water. Trump has gutted the EPA, making it virtually impossible for that agency to carry out its research and protective functions. Obama also resisted opening up new areas for exploitation, and created Bears Ears National Monument. Trump is now dismantling that and opening it up for exploitation (including fracking). I could go on...

@TheMiddleWay Oh do not worry my friend, I take your point. I taught high school science for 20 years. I know that as scientists we must always leave the door to change unlocked and open at least a crack. But sometimes there comes a point where the evidence is so overwhelming that we can safely say that a question is settled. The shift from geocentrism to heliocentrism was somewhat halting at first, but now no one (no serious person) argues that we may someday find that the universe revolves around the Earth. And so it is with evolutionary theory and plate tectonics. The evolution of hundreds of macro species has been measured in real time. Likewise the movements of tectonic plates. On these issues we have moved from the realm of guarded confidence into plain certainty. Failure to accept these facts in the interest of keeping up the appearance of scientific integrity is akin to stubbornly clinging to religious dogma. It's time to move on.

But it is safe to say that the facts of the age of the Earth, give or take a few million years, and the origin of species, give or take a few twigs on the phylogenetic tree, are well-established facts and are not going to change. Unbeknownst to me, this 40-litre Florence flask had sat unused in storage for years. It had been donated to the school by County Sheriff, who had confiscated it from an illegal drug lab. The Science Dept. Chair was going to throw it in the trash. I rescued it, made a base for it, and used it as a classroom fish tank. 🙂
