I wish that I could say, that I have forgotten all the harm that I have experienced from my mother and various other people, but I have not forgotten. I have however... been able to put them behind me. Most days I do not remember a single hurt...and on other days, I feel deeply sad for a short period of time over some past event and then I move past it. I just give the hurt permission to be with me...but I move on away asap. These hurts. are not always hurts that was done to me, I caused hurt out of my ignorance to several other people as well as to my children. When these ‘hurts’ come to mind, I usually think how I could have handled something better or if I knew then, what I know now, I would have done ‘such-in-such’ differently. Now...here is the worst part! Sometimes, a behavior from my past when I handled my ‘psychic pain’ poorly will be overwhelming. A feeling of ‘flinging’ myself off a bridge, will rear it’s ugly head! (Now, there is no doubt in my mind, that this thinking is not going to be helpful for me.). This is when I must have a serious ‘inner dialogue’ with my reality...yes, what happened hurt me, I still feel hurt, but that happened in the past...today is a different and new day. I make a deliberate effort to forgive those that hurt me as I would ask for the same forgiveness for my hurtful actions, if it was/is possible. Dead people can’t interact with the living. So I must find a way to forgive myself...(not excuse myself). Like ‘they had it coming,’ etc. for what they did to me or caused me to do.’ I must recognize that what I know now is not what I knew ‘back when’...what I see now is...that we each come to the table with a certain amount of ignorance...until we learn something different. We must forgive ourself and all others...however, we want forget these hurts forever. If one part of the brain loses it’s ability to remember, then something necessary will be lost from that area as well! It is not possible to ‘cut out’ parts of our brain and still be functioning well! I have learned to live with hurt, sadness and regret...but I manage it and except that living with our memories must be the only way that we can keep our sanity and keep growing in our emotional and mental health. I hope that you can develop your own way of coping with loss and hurt. It is a lonely place to be, but it is only a small part of who you are...you are much more than your hurts and losses. I would try what this Dr has suggested and see where it can take you. It is dangerous to believe that our answers will be found in one place or one source. But, something of value to you, will be realized if you see what new thing can be yours in this process. There is no ‘magic bullit (that I have ...

I wish that I could say, stay in there and hopefully you can save your sister. As a relationship between an atheist and a devout Christian has little chance of working out. But, what I would do when you are with your sister, is to challenge her with facts (not over the head), just remind her calmly and with the affection that you hold for her. As to your position with sister’s boy friend...you owe him nothing other than respect as a human being. If you find yourself in a discussion with him on religion or anything for that matter, if you disagree, say so...but try and present it a manner that is not antagonistic. Because your goal to to preserve your self worth and your integrity. That is always our first priority! What, I would also do is...schedule myself to be around him as little as possible. You do not have to live with this person and if others see something different about him...then good for all concerned! Recognize that something about this person’s makeup brings out doubt in your worth or value. But, concrete in your mind NOW, that this person has no idea of your value, he can’t even relate to your ideas (it sounds to me), HE does not know you (the you that you feel free to reveal to people you trust). Just remember to put up your protective invisible shield, when you must be in his presence. Just relate to him the same way, that you would relate to a stranger on the street that you do not know. Because, my guess is...he will not reveal his ‘real’ self in a significant meaningful way...at least not to you. Just accept him as he is...and there is no need to fear him (his ideas, opinions), unless you witnessed things that said otherwise. Your job (this is true for any one of us), is to atend to our own well-being and often times that means limiting time spent around certain people. And when we must...practice being there, but not really there FOR them. I hope I have been of some help...I do have some experience in dealing with family members and neighbors that I can’t feel good about. Don’t let it get to you...we simply can’t relate to every single personality (and especially the strongly religious ones, unless you are one of them).
