This may be due to poor communication skills or not fully knowing one’s self. The latter person strikes back at others, believing THEY are the reason for an uncomfortable or even angry feeling that comes up, from a thought or opinion. I think this is common through society. In this situation I would write a letter, briefly laying out the situation at your end. If you do care...just express that sentiment and leave it in your father-in-law’s and girlfriend’s court. Usually, keeping our distance creates guilt, even when we must...so be upfront with them and attend to your wellbeing, that seems to be the best that can take place at this time.

My cousin's daughter is graduating college in May.

A person should always have the respect from others, when they must decline an invitation of any kind. If you really do not want to attend for whatever reason, stand in your truth. It is not just this one incident...you will fold anytime you would rather do otherwise. This will not build strength to live as you need to live...for you. Ask, if your cousin would make a video of her daughter’s part in the ceremony. Maybe that is the most that you care about in this situation? Show your cousin, how glad you are that she wants to attend, and that you would be interested in seeing the pictures. But...will not be going!

I saw a therapist for years! Even after I felt like I could go it alone, there were times i had to go back because I felt that I was loosing it! Then I was forced to figure it out by myself, because therapy was no longer affordable. After, I kept plowing thru the anxiety of wondering if I could make my own way...I did get stronger and even if I am thrown off balance and hurting, I have the belief that I can get through whatever can trip me up! We must believe in our abilities, even if they seem weak. As we keep working toward a ‘better place,’ we can ‘know’ our strength and how it will hold us up. We each need to have an idea where our plastic debris goes. Here in the SouthWest, when those west wind storms come in...the 60-80 mph winds blows up anything that is not anchored. Just now we have plastic and paper stuck in trees, thorny bushes and on the ground. It seems overwhelming! And sad, a lot of the debris could not be helped, but a lot more was due to careless disposal of trash.
