As an Atheist, I would like to know if others who also do not believe in a god get tired of arguing with believers. Sometimes I wonder that by arguing what is clearly a delusion if it only serves to legitimize that delusion.

My granddaughter mentioned looking forward to this ceremony, which I find horrifying. How could I possibly attend such a farcical occasion? Her parents are not together & I'm sure this comes from exposure to her other grandmother.

LINKDo ripples in space-time herald a new theory of gravity? | Aeon Essays
A billion years ago, two dancing black holes make a final spin, merge, and – in a matter of seconds – release a cataclysmic amount of energy. Much as a falling pebble spreads waves on the surface of a still lake, the merger initiates gravitational waves in the space-time continuum. Fast-forward to planet Earth and the year 2015. After an immense journey, the gravitational waves from the black-hole merger pass through our solar system. On the morning of 14 September, they oh-so-slightly ...

LINKThere’s no philosophy of life without a theory of human nature | Aeon Essays
What exactly does science tell us about the idea of a human nature? If we take evolutionary biology seriously, then we certainly should reject any essentialist conception of it, such as Aristotle’s. There is no immutable, clearly defined ‘essence’ that characterizes human beings, and only them, within the whole animal world. From Charles Darwin onward, the scientific consensus has been pretty clear: we are but one species among millions on Earth, members of a not particularly numerous ...

LINKHow NASA Will Handle InSight's 6-Month Journey to Mars - The Atlantic
This year, NASA will again experience these “seven minutes of terror” when its newest Mars mission arrives at the planet in November. Unlike the Curiosity rover, the InSight lander—the Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport—will spend its lifetime in one spot on the Martian surface, burrowing beneath the soil to study the properties of planet’s interior. The mission launches early Saturday from California, weather permitting. (Right now, ...

LINKWhat Biology Can Teach Us About Crime and Justice
The field of ethology, formally the study of animal behavior in their natural setting, has been rebranded by some scholars as the study of animal minds. Among the most important pioneers in this field are the “trimates:” Jane Goodall, the late Dian Fossey, and Birutë Galdikas, the scientists who made the most significant contributions to our knowledge of the natural behaviors of chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans, respectively.2 Their work has inspired scientists from around the globe to...

John Bolton Iran Policy
This morning I turned on the tv for information on the Iran deal that idiot in charge just destroyed. One of the guests they were interviewing was John Bolton. When his smirking, walrus like (with apologies to the walrus community), idiotic, hateful excuse for a face (my feelings left over from his time in the Bush admin.) came onto the screen I had to turn it off. Pell is the most senior member of the Catholic Church to be involved in what has now been decades of scandal over allegations of systematic child abuse in the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s, by Catholic clergy worldwide. The sex abuse scandal reached the public eye in the 1990s after a series of television documentaries, including 1994’s Suffer the Children, brought the issue to light in Ireland. Later, it spread, with reports of widespread clerical abuse affecting thousands of children in...

Additionally, according to Forbes, Dr. Oz talks to the dead, says that 200 orgasms per year will extend a person's life by six years, endorses Reiki healing, and claims that his wife and kids use homeopathy. LINKChecking Humanism’s Privilege and Pulse - TheHumanist.com
We live in a patriarchal society that imbues increased social power to men through cultural norms and customs, while restricting access to these social privileges to women. Sexism is a body of ideas that exists to justify these standards, and misogyny is a moral manifestation of this sexist ideology. Men don’t want to hear that. We don’t sense our inflated sense of entitlement because dominant culture’s messaging rings true to us. We want to believe “the real sexists” are only the men ...

LINKNew evidence about the human occupation of Asia is cascading in | Aeon Essays
There is still a tremendous amount of research to do in Asian palaeoanthropology. The increasing number of contributions coming out of Asia is forcing scholars to rethink how they view various modern human origin models. Indeed, just this January, a study in Science indicated that the earliest modern humans in Asia date to between 177,000 and 194,000 years ago from the Misliya cave in Israel. It seems as if, every few weeks now, a new hominin fossil, genetic study, archaeological site, or ...
