@maturin1919 I think nearly any of the Democratic candidates can beat Trump. Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million. A combination of 78,000 votes in 3 states gave him the electoral college victory. His popularity has never been over 50%. His handling of the economy is suspect at best - national deficit is at an all time high due to the tax bill he signed. Tax revenues have not even come close to keeping up. The stock market has reached new highs due to the tax breaks for corporations that have simply bought up their own stocks, inflating the market. His trade wars have been disastrous for our agricultural sector - we're paying billions to keep farmers solvent after he upset the markets. His repurposed NAFTA deal had very little change. He hasn’t brought back coal industry jobs as he promised in his campaign. More jobs were created in the last 18 months of Obama’s term than the first 18 of Trump. Internationally he’s done nothing - North Korea hasn’t done anything to denuclearize. Without massive interference from foreign entities, I don’t see Trump having a snowballs chance in hell.

George H W Bush was complicit in that scandal as well as drug smuggling from South America and was saved by non other than William Barr. We’ve covered Clinton. George W Bush with the help of Cheney lied us into a war and ordered to commission torture and other war crimes. Every 10 years political districts are adjusted. In 2010, Republicans held enough state majorities to draw district lines in their favor - Gerrymandering. Even though there are far more Democratic votes cast in the US, Republicans hold the majority of offices. Senate races aren’t influenced greatly by gerrymandering, but incumbency itself is a huge advantage. McConnell has increased his personal wealth immensely during his time in office, only partly due to his marriage to the heiress of an international shipping company, and campaign contributions from Russia.

I've tried to grow rhubarb here in NC with no success and haven't found it in any supermarket locally . It'll be on my list for next trip up north . Looks good and bet it tastes good .

@mojo5501 The tax cut passed by the Republicans is the equivalent of handing a brand new, trillion dollar credit card the obscenely rich. The deficit has increased by 1.5 trillion due to this, and tax revenues aren’t increasing anywhere near enough to pay for it. The increase in stock market value comes mostly from corporations using their tax savings to buy up their own stock (wich increases it’s value, since there are fewer shares on the market to purchase), the increase in stock value translates to higher CEO earnings, since they can receive compensation in the form of company stock. It’s a pyramid scheme which will crash in due time.
Deal-breakers and Red Flags are often discussed here - this is the opposite. Not a bad start?

@Marionville I did a bit of digging - the song was written by Si Kahn about the Aragon Mill in Georgia, USA. @FrayedBear It was fun to hear, that Kyle Huval‘s father made the accordion that he plays. There was a great “round table”, where they had accordionist from all the different bands together to talk about their instruments and mentors and to play music together. I’ll post some of the others - it was a wonderful weekend!

Why do you presume the government would screw it up? Our highway system is run by a combination of federal, state and local governments and for the most part does a good job. I believe any sort of national healthcare would be along the same lines. The only other way I can envision healthcare for all would be to require all insurance companies to become not for profit institutions. I can’t think of any country that has government run healthcare that’s screwed it up so badly that they’ve reverted to private, for profit insurance companies - perhaps we’d be the first, but I’m a little more optimistic:)

@zesty How recent is your experience outside the US? I haven’t travelled outside the USA in several decades, but from what I’ve read it seems that the current administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accords, and the Iran nuclear treaty have diminished our standing in the world view. For the first time, we’ve had citizens of another nation protest our president visiting their country with a ballon representing him as a baby in a diaper. Certainly our science and technology are very good, and we may not be disrespected as individuals, but I think the divisiveness of our politics has lowered our standing in the eyes of the world.
