Why are so many smart women falling for its harmful, pseudoscientific claims? By Jessica Knoll Ms. Knoll is a novelist. June 8, 2019 At its core, wellness demonizes calorically dense and delicious foods. A few months ago, I had lunch with the writer behind one of my favorite movies of the year, the agent who made the deal and the producer who packaged the project. I wanted to hear all about the process and perhaps find an opportunity to collaborate. When the server came to take our order, I flashed to that scene in “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” when Mira Sorvino walks into a diner in a striped skirt suit and asks the waitress, “Do you have some sort of businesswomen’s special?” Had there been any sort of businesswomen’s special that day, our group probably couldn’t have ordered it. Someone was slogging through the Whole30 program, someone had eliminated dairy, and someone else was simply trying to be “good” after a “bad” weekend. The producer said it didn’t matter how “good” she was. She had lost the baby weight and though she may look tolerable in clothes, under the Spanx her stomach was a horror show. The writer said she had so much cellulite on her thighs she looked diseased. I gazed around the restaurant, longingly, wondering what the men eating cheeseburgers were talking about. At one time, I too would gleefully have torn myself apart. I despised my body, and my devotion to changing it amounted to years of unpaid labor, starting with a bout of bulimia in high school. In preparation for my wedding, I worked out twice a day on 800 calories. From there I moved on to counting macros, replacing rice with cauliflower pellets, 13-day cleanses, intermittent fasting and an elimination diet that barred sugar, dairy and nightshades like potatoes. Every new regimen ended in the same violent binge. I’d wait for my husband to go to bed so that I could obliterate the pantry without him asking, “Are you O.K.?” For the next few days, I would throw myself on the altar of “clean eating,” only to start the cycle all over again. I called this poisonous relationship between a body I was indoctrinated to hate and food I had been taught to fear “wellness.” This was before I could recognize wellness culture for what it was — a dangerous con that seduces smart women with pseudoscientific claims of increasing energy, reducing inflammation, lowering the risk of cancer and healing skin, gut and fertility problems. But at its core, “wellness” is about weight loss. It demonizes calorically dense and delicious foods, preserving a vicious fallacy: Thin is healthy and healthy is thin. You can't debunk it and why do you want to? It is 100% true that for some people religion is an important psychological support. I've been single since 2010ish. I was on many dating sites, POF, OKC, Match, eHarmony, Mingle, and some local sites and some I paid for. My outcome: Nada, zilch, less than zero. You're not doing it wrong, there is no way to do it right. I had one long term, and a few shorter. I'm not willing to move, I'm not willing to deal with kids that are greatly younger than my own kids. I will not fall in bed on the first date. I would like a long term partner, and right now it looks like it will be me. Well, with the kitty girls. Could be worse. I'm content with my own company. Seriously, better alone and content than hitched and miserable. BTDT, won't do that again. So I date if I can, and have no expectations of anything changing. So far I have been successful at that.
Does anyone else hate the phrase "I love you" ?
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 8, 2019:
I like the I love yous. I tell my kids/grandkids all the time. I like to tell my kids when I think they are doing good, and how much I appreciate them. I like to point out to them what good parents and good people they are, especially when they're going through a trying time. The hospital I work for has just sent us through training classes called the Language of Caring, it is aimed at improving relations between staff and patients, and between staff and staff. It makes a difference. Acknowledge the struggle, pay attention to me. It keeps patient satisfaction up and avoids escalations and lawsuits. The sad part is that so many of the admin office staff make fun of the training and denigrate it. I'm counting days till I can really retire. For me in my training, I want to know what I did wrong, but damn it, I also want it acknowledged when I have done good. I think compliments are the life blood of relationships. Tell them when they're doing good, tell them how much they mean to you. The other part of this is, ****at any time any of us could be hit by a bus.**** Don't leave your loved ones guessing about how much you care about them. If you don't tell them, they will never be sure. The greatest gift my mom gave me was a card she wrote from the hospital telling me she loved me. She died at age 45, I was 14. She did this for all six of us. When my stepwitch spewed her venom I knew she was wrong, I knew my real mom loved me. @Anonbene thank you for opening up this line of conversation. You took a risk. I haven't read all the responses yet, but sometimes when you open cans of worms like this people can be.... well, less than pleasant. Any time you expose a vulnerability you open yourself, and I'm glad you did.

I stopped carrying stuff for any distance, I have a wheeled bag to carry stuff I need to take to work. I no longer sit on my soft comfy sofa, I sit on a firmer chair. The biggest relief I have seen was from doing some yoga stretches/poses for the back, and I lay on the floor every night for about 10 minutes with my feet above my hips at about a 90° angle. There were a few days I was afraid I might need to give it up and go to the doctor, but finally it is waning.

My ex kept all our correspondence while we "courted." I grabbed it when I was moving out. I think I still have it someplace, and will give to the kids in a few years.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
