I love napping, and when I can I do. I also love various needlecrafts. I sew, crochet, knit, cross stitch. I have a quilt in progress right now, and am crocheting a scarf to go with my new winter coat. I have made quilts and afghans for my children. It makes me happy to know that those will carry memories for my kids and grands long after I am gone, and they are useful too.
Why do people put pictures of their kids but not themselves in dating profiles?
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 26, 2019:
I avoid them. I want a relationship with the person before I try to tackle the kid/s. I don't even tell my kids if/when I'm dating until it is established and fairly serious. Because of my age I even avoid men that have children still in school. I'm done with all that and have NO desire to go back. I love being a grammy which means I can do school stuff as I want to. But hey, it's the grands, I want to :)

Have you ever borrowed time?
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 25, 2019:
If I am living with a terminal illness, I could be said to be living on borrowed time. The interest I pay is the treatment required to keep me alive. In the case of chemo I think that is too high a price to pay, I doubt I will ever agree to chemo. Borrowed time will be a debt you can never repay or give back. Whom or what it is borrowed from is the universe. That which makes you who/what you are cannot be released back to the universe while you are using/inhabiting it. When I was a claims examiner for short term disability, one of my claimants was a 72 year old single lady schoolteacher. She had not missed a day of school in over 40 years, and then she got a cancer diagnosis. She was kept alive by chemo. She had chemo three days a week was sick for two or three days, and had one to two good days a week. From talking to her she had very little quality of life, I always wondered why she was putting in so much effort for so little reward. But not my business, she rolled to long term disability and I rolled to another job. I care about quality of life, and if I can't have it I want to go quietly into that long dark night. No tubes, no machines, no restrictions. My kids know this.
Have not seen one in a very long time.

HippieChick58 comments on Oct 20, 2019:
Three years ago I had to put down my heart cat. She was so bonded to humans it was amazing. She slept with me every night, and I'm talking full body contact. She was blind due to a congenital eye disease. She lived a good life with me, she was quite pampered, but when I knew she was not living much of a life I knew it was time to let her go. My two youngest girls and I took her to the vet and we held her and talked to her as she drifted off. To me it came down to quality of life. When there are more bad times than good times it is time to let them go. Miss Millie's remains are planted under a bush at the home of the youngest child. The dog that she spent much of her life with is planted on the other side of the bush. They will live on forever in our hearts.

I grew up as a Smith. That got changed at 19 to Wilson, which was changed at 25 to another common name, which is also the name of former presidents. I kept the married name when I divorced because of kids and degree. And it doesn't matter. I am Paula which is uncommon enough. I look at it that the last names belonged to someone else, Paula was chosen for me. And not that I"m fond of it, but I'm kinda used to it. The most important people in my life call me Mom or Grammy, and maybe one day a special person will have another name for me.

The most important document you may ever read
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 16, 2019:
OPINION — On the day that special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on election interference came out, cable news anchors strained to race through its 448 pages and describe the findings, all in the same breath. Computer sleuths hacked the document’s setting to let users search for “Trump,” “president,” “collusion” and “Russia.” Talking-head lawyers feverishly opined that Volume I contained less incriminating information than Volume II. But around the country, voters mostly gave an “Is that all there is?” shoulder shrug and went back to their corners. Many members of Congress admitted they didn’t even bother to read it. Nearly six months later, and to almost no fanfare last week while Congress was in recess, the Senate Intelligence Committee released the second of two installments of its own bipartisan investigation into roughly the same topic. The slim, 85-page report reads like a Russian spy novel crossed with a sequel to Orwell’s most dystopian version of the future — right down to an interview with a paid Russian troll who said his experience in 2016, pitting American voters against each other with social media platforms of their own making, was like being “a character in the book ‘1984’ by George Orwell — a place where you have to write that white is black and black is white.” Unlike Mueller, who seemed to take great pains not to point fingers and softened his recommendations, the Intelligence Committee, led by Chairman Richard Burr and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, put its warnings in the starkest possible terms. First, the Russians deliberately attacked American voters with an active measures campaign in 2016 to benefit Donald Trump and destroy Hillary Clinton. On the morning after Election Day, a former troll told the committee, exhausted hackers in St. Petersburg, Russia, uncorked tiny of champagne. They looked into each other’s eyes. “We uttered almost in unison: ‘We made America great.’” Because of Russia’s success, the committee also warned that China, North Korea, Iran and other malicious actors are activiely studying what Americans fell for (nearly everything) in order to use even more sophisticated techniques in 2020 — including at this very moment. And finally, the committee made clear that Americans themselves need to both wake up and smarten up. Only by being more sophisticated and intelligent social media users will voters truly protect themselves and our elections in the years to come. The tactics and strategies that the Kremlin directed included every major social media platform you can think of — Facebook, Instagram, Twitter — and a few you’d never suspect, including Pinterest, LinkedIn and 4Chan. The hashtags alone tell the story— #MAGA #TrumpTrain ...

Racists Are Recruiting. Watch Your White Sons.
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 14, 2019:
Second Article: "Racists Are Recruiting. Watch Your White Sons," warns a recent New York Times piece by the feminist writer Joanna Schroeder. While it is undoubtedly true that white supremacist trolls try to appeal to vulnerable young men, the incident that prompted Schroeder to write her piece suggests she is succumbing to unnecessary panic. What happened? Her two sons, ages 11 and 14, liked some memes and used the word "triggered." Upon hearing them use this word, "I almost lost control of the car," writes Schroeder, reacting in the very manner her sons were probably deriding. "That's because I know that word—often used to mock people who are hurt or offended by racism as overly sensitive —is a calling card of the alt-right, which the Anti-Defamation League defines as 'a segment of the white supremacist movement consisting of a loose network of racists and anti-Semites who reject mainstream conservatism in favor of politics that embrace implicit or explicit racism, anti-Semitism and white supremacy.' People associated with this group are known for trolling those who disagree with them, and calling critics 'triggered' is a favorite tactic." That is true as far as it goes. But calling critics "triggered" is also common in other parts of the right, and by now it has entered apolitical quarters as well. Next, Schroeder criticizes her son for liking a meme that he didn't understand was anti-Semitic. "I worried that he was being pulled toward a worldview that would see this painful history as fodder for jokes, or worse, as something to celebrate," she writes. It's good for parents to be engaged with what their kids are consuming and to talk to them about not being racists. But if they are in danger of succumbing to far-right internet culture, shaming them in the pages of The New York Times does not seem like the best strategy for bringing wayward teens back into the fold. Schroeder—whose oeuvre also includes two articles for The Huffington Post, "7 Things I'm Not Afraid to Tell My Sons About Love, Sex, and Their Bodies" and "Is It My Responsibility to Make My Son 'Cool'?"—also spoke with NPR about her obsessive monitoring of her son's social media usage. It veers toward self-awareness but does not make it all the way there: Schroeder has become determined to prevent her young boys from being groomed by radical messaging through these online pathways. But she says it was important to not approach her kids about the topic from a place of shaming. "They're kids and we can't expect them to automatically be able to detect propaganda when it's being presented to them," she said. And shame, as she noted on Twitter, is the same tactic used to recruit young men to extremist groups. When kids are castigated for sharing these ...
Racists Are Recruiting. Watch Your White Sons.
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 14, 2019:
First article: Raising teenagers can be terrifying. Our squishy little babies become awkward hormonal creatures who question our authority at every turn. I expected that. What I didn’t predict was that my sons’ adolescence would include being drawn to the kind of online content that right-wing extremists use to recruit so many young men. The first sign was a seemingly innocuous word, used lightheartedly: “triggered.” As my 11- and 14-year-old sons and their friends talked and bantered — phones in hand, as always — in the back seat of the car, one of them shouted it in response to a meme, and they all laughed uproariously. I almost lost control of the car. That’s because I know that word — often used to mock people who are hurt or offended by racism as overly sensitive — is a calling card of the alt-right, which the Anti-Defamation League defines as “a segment of the white supremacist movement consisting of a loose network of racists and anti-Semites who reject mainstream conservatism in favor of politics that embrace implicit or explicit racism, anti-Semitism and white supremacy.” People associated with this group are known for trolling those who disagree with them, and calling critics “triggered” is a favorite tactic. The next red flag: I watched my son scroll through Instagram and double-click on an image, lighting up a heart that signifies a “like.” “Hold on a minute,” I said, snatching his phone. “Was that Hitler?” The meme showed a man in contemporary clothing tipping off the Nazi leader to the invasion of Normandy. My son said he hadn’t even read it, he’d just assumed the time traveler was trying to kill Hitler, not help him. He was shocked and embarrassed when I pointed out the actual message: that it would have been better if the Holocaust had continued. “I’m not stupid enough to like a Hitler meme on purpose, Mom,” he said. “And anyway, I’m sure my friend shared it to be ironic.” I didn’t see the irony and my son couldn’t explain it. I talked to him about the Holocaust, the trauma and violence that Jewish people all over the world still experience and my late friend Edith, whose delicate arm displayed a number tattoo that stopped my heart every time I saw it. He knew all this already, but I worried that he was forgetting. I worried that he was being pulled toward a worldview that would see this painful history as fodder for jokes, or worse, as something to celebrate. At a time when the F.B.I. reports a 17 percent rise in hate crime incidents from 2016 to 2017, the most recent year for which there is data, white parents like me have had recent, terrifying reminders that we must prevent our sons from becoming indoctrinated by a growing racist movement ...

Top Military Officers Unload on Trump
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 8, 2019:
For most of the past two decades, American troops have been deployed all over the world—to about 150 countries. During that time, hundreds of thousands of young men and women have experienced combat, and a generation of officers have come of age dealing with the practical realities of war. They possess a deep well of knowledge and experience. For the past three years, these highly trained professionals have been commanded by Donald Trump. To get a sense of what serving Trump has been like, I interviewed officers up and down the ranks, as well as several present and former civilian Pentagon employees. Among the officers I spoke with were four of the highest ranks—three or four stars—all recently retired. All but one served Trump directly; the other left the service shortly before Trump was inaugurated. They come from different branches of the military, but I’ll simply refer to them as “the generals.” Some spoke only off the record, some allowed what they said to be quoted without attribution, and some talked on the record. Military officers are sworn to serve whomever voters send to the White House. Cognizant of the special authority they hold, high-level officers epitomize respect for the chain of command, and are extremely reticent about criticizing their civilian overseers. That those I spoke with made an exception in Trump’s case is telling, and much of what they told me is deeply disturbing. In 20 years of writing about the military, I have never heard officers in high positions express such alarm about a president. Trump’s pronouncements and orders have already risked catastrophic and unnecessary wars in the Middle East and Asia, and have created severe problems for field commanders engaged in combat operations. Frequently caught unawares by Trump’s statements, senior military officers have scrambled, in their aftermath, to steer the country away from tragedy. How many times can they successfully do that before faltering? Amid threats spanning the globe, from nuclear proliferation to mined tankers in the Persian Gulf to terrorist attacks and cyberwarfare, those in command positions monitor the president’s Twitter feed like field officers scanning the horizon for enemy troop movements. A new front line in national defense has become the White House Situation Room, where the military struggles to accommodate a commander in chief who is both ignorant and capricious. In May, after months of threatening Iran, Trump ordered the carrier group led by the USS Abraham Lincoln to shift from the Mediterranean Sea to the Persian Gulf. On June 20, after an American drone was downed there, he ordered a retaliatory attack—and then called it off minutes before it was to be launched. The next day he said he was “not looking for ...

Four Benefits of Adopting Two Cats [worldsbestcatlitter.com]
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 8, 2019:
When I was married ex said two pets only, and I went along with that. Post divorce I kept the kitty that was blind, he kept the dog as I could not take him with me. Then the dog was rehomed with his vet so it was a very good fit. I did try to get a second kitty but old kitty's eye issues made her crabby and new kitty picked on her. New kitty went with my daughter after a few months. I had old kitty as an only for the last 5 or 6 years of her life. A few months after she passed I got Xena who was about a year old at the time. Then 10 months later I got Zelda and she was about 6 months old. It is so entertaining to watch them. Xena can groom Zelda, but not the other way around. It seems like they egg each other into mischief, or one will watch for me while the other gets into stuff. Xena is a ginger and she prefers the ginger grandson. Zelda is a dark tabby and she prefers the brown haired granddaughter. I love my kitties, don't ever want to have a single kitty again. I'd like to have a dog one day, but not while I'm working. However, I will never live without a kitty, they just make the house homey.
