I enjoy my own company, and that of my cats. I was far, far lonelier when I was married and playing second fiddle to ex's hobby. I think everyone needs to spend some time all by themselves to figure out who they really are.

There are a number of websites out there online that are dedicated to unmasking or educating about scammers. If you google the scripts you will find the sites, they keep stuff like this to raise the awareness of online romance scams. Or just google online romance scams. It is fascinating in a sick way. There are a couple of groups here on Ag.com dedicated to exposing the scammers and alerting Admin/site support to get rid of them. Yes, it is a free site, we will have scammers.

And yes, meet in person as soon as you can. For me that is the preferred method of operation. That is the true test of whether they are a real person or a scammer. You won't meet scammers in person.

I would miss my kitty girls, they are not good travelers. I've traveled with cats before, they were not amused. If I was gone for too long I'd miss my babies, the grandchildren. SamSam knows how to use Duo and she has Grammy's number. I would miss some of the comforts, stuff I have in the places where it is needed. Having lived a rather nomadic life for many years, I am a good traveler. I enjoy variety, but I also enjoy my familiar surrounding. Sometimes the best part of traveling is coming back home.

Incel: This is what I would have been told was a personal problem when I was growing up. Involuntarily Celibate would have been the "normal" state of affairs for single folks, at least per the religious leaders. For the rest of us the common wisdom was if your style isn't working then you need to change your style. When did it happen that men decided women owed them something? First of all, and I'm going to be both blunt and crude. I'm a grandmother, I've earned that. Why the hell do you think you're a loser? You're 26, you haven't even had a chance to fly yet, to hell with this loser stuff. You're too young to be a loser. Your whole life is in front of you. You will lose from time to time, but that makes you human and normal. When you get to my age (I'm 61) if you have never held a job, held a child, helped anyone, loved anyone or anything, then and only then I might call you a loser. Right now the only thing I will call you is young and searching, which is what you should be. I wish I was 26 again. Here is some additional advise from an older woman. Never look in a mirror except to make sure that you don't have gunk in your teeth. You're beautiful, you don't need the mirror to tell you that. You're beautiful because you are. Please internalize that no one is looking at you. People that you encounter during the day are so wrapped up in themselves they won't remember you for a nanosecond. So even if you have gunk in your teeth (or worse), it is OK. Go on the date. Wear what makes you happy, talk about what makes you happy, eat what makes you happy. Be happy, and even if the date sucks you will have been happy. Every day do something that makes you happy. And always, always, always remember to breathe and just be.

Good article. I agree that we don't find happiness by comparing ourselves to the Joneses. We're not the Joneses, and those things important to the Joneses are not important to me. I find that TV is one of the biggest traps for unhappiness in modern life. Generally all advertising. Stuff is sold to us by making us feel like were missing out if we don't have it, or we won't achieve our full potential without it. In fact FOMO has been coined because of it, Fear of Missing Out. Beer commercials show the good life with a six pack and our buddies. Cosmetics commercials tell us we're not good enough without that goop on our face. You can't sell a product unless you can create a need for it, and you can't create a need for it if people don't know about it and why they need it. I won't even get started on "fashion." I'm quite happy "Missing Out." I'm going to save my time and my money for what is important as I decide they are important.

My take on this is that we are conditioned by the society that we live in, and by the images and ideas imprinted on us from the time we are born. My dad swore like a sailor, and he was a non believer. I grew up hearing Jesus Christ, god damn it, and other religious terms used as a pejorative terms. I think under periods of extreme stress our minds go back to those early memories and reactions. When my dad hit his thumb with a hammer he let loose with something akin to J.... F.... C....!!! He wasn't praying. When I was in a near miss accident recently I did cut loose with similar sentiments. Trust me, I wasn't praying for the soul of either one of us.
