This is the problem farmers on our area are experiencing this year. The flooding has washed away the topsoil in many places, or covered it with sand, or worse with heavy metals. Bad year in the heartlands.

I saw a posting on FB in a craft group I'm a member of, one woman said her husband "gave her permission to purchase..." and I almost responded but kept my thoughts to myself. Even when I was married I didn't ask permission or wait for permission to spend money. Pro: no one stealing covers or pulling them away from me. No one else's stuff to sort through. Con: No help for much of anything, I do have the kids but they don't live here. o one to blame stuff on. No one to discuss decisions that need to be made except getting the kids involved. No hugs for days at a time.
Watch out for this member. Screen tells all.
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 19, 2019:
I think we have discussed this member before. He definitely marches to the beat of his own drummer, and inhabits a plane all of his own. I think he is essentially harmless, but I wouldn't get into a car with him.

For those with hearing impairments, restaurant noise isn’t just an irritation.
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 19, 2019:
(Franziska Barczyk/for The Washington Post) By Joyce Cohen June 17 at 12:00 PM It was supposed to be a joyful family gathering. Last spring, Kim Powers-Brown took an overnight train from her home in eastern Washington state to join her relatives at a restaurant near Seattle. Because of her hearing difficulties — she cannot understand speech amid background noise — the group of four requested a quieter spot. “The waitress said no, that side of the restaurant was closed and she was the only waitress on duty — it would be too much trouble,” Powers-Brown said. The family was led to a corner table, with a speaker playing music overhead. She couldn’t understand a word. Her brother demanded they sit in the quieter closed section. “I begged him not to embarrass me,” said Powers-Brown, who was born partially deaf and wears a hearing aid in one ear. [Why I will start including accessibility information in my restaurant reviews] ut we were still treated rudely,” she said. “It was very uncomfortable. I felt terrible that our get-together meal was such a disaster because of my needs.” Under Title III of the Americans With Disabilities Act, restaurants — as places of public accommodation — must accommodate disabilities. But what if the disability is a hearing impairment, and the request is for a lower volume? On this issue, the law has largely remained silent. Hard-of-hearing diners report a vast range of responses when they seek softer music or quieter seating. Sometimes the music is turned down or off, and sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes it is even turned up. Maybe the volume is declared unchangeable, set by corporate overseers. Or there’s no available seating far from the clattering kitchen, the droning ventilation, the hearty partyers. Powers-Brown, 60, who is earning a library degree, rarely dines out with anyone but her husband. She never even thought to request quiet. “I was brought up to adjust to others,” she said. Instead of struggling to converse over a meal, she reads. The law, though, requires “full and equal enjoyment in places of public accommodation,” said Daniel Fink, a retired Los Angeles doctor and a noise activist. His paper on the disability-rights aspects of ambient noise was presented at a recent meeting of the Acoustical Society of America. “I can guarantee that people with hearing impairments don’t fully enjoy noisy restaurants,” he said. Pisco y Nazca in the District, where dining-room noise levels last fall measured 95 decibels, or about as loud as a power mower. (Deb Lindsey/for The Washington Post) Restaurants these days are louder than ever, to the point where critics (led by The Post’s Tom Sietsema) check volume levels and diners grouse about them....

"alternative" treatments for anxiety/depression?
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 18, 2019:
I do meditation, and it does take a while to get the control over your monkey brain. I know it helps me because when I meditate my resting heart rate falls. When I stopped meditating my heart rate climbed with my anxiety levels. I wear a fit bit so I have the feedback and can track my RHR. It is just one measure of health. I use an app called CALM, it has daily meditations and other meditations aimed at specific topics, I remember that flight anxiety is one, better sleep. I tried sage smudging, I just thought my house smelled like BBQ for over a week.

Why are so many smart women falling for its harmful, pseudoscientific claims? By Jessica Knoll Ms. Knoll is a novelist. June 8, 2019 At its core, wellness demonizes calorically dense and delicious foods. A few months ago, I had lunch with the writer behind one of my favorite movies of the year, the agent who made the deal and the producer who packaged the project. I wanted to hear all about the process and perhaps find an opportunity to collaborate. When the server came to take our order, I flashed to that scene in “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” when Mira Sorvino walks into a diner in a striped skirt suit and asks the waitress, “Do you have some sort of businesswomen’s special?” Had there been any sort of businesswomen’s special that day, our group probably couldn’t have ordered it. Someone was slogging through the Whole30 program, someone had eliminated dairy, and someone else was simply trying to be “good” after a “bad” weekend. The producer said it didn’t matter how “good” she was. She had lost the baby weight and though she may look tolerable in clothes, under the Spanx her stomach was a horror show. The writer said she had so much cellulite on her thighs she looked diseased. I gazed around the restaurant, longingly, wondering what the men eating cheeseburgers were talking about. At one time, I too would gleefully have torn myself apart. I despised my body, and my devotion to changing it amounted to years of unpaid labor, starting with a bout of bulimia in high school. In preparation for my wedding, I worked out twice a day on 800 calories. From there I moved on to counting macros, replacing rice with cauliflower pellets, 13-day cleanses, intermittent fasting and an elimination diet that barred sugar, dairy and nightshades like potatoes. Every new regimen ended in the same violent binge. I’d wait for my husband to go to bed so that I could obliterate the pantry without him asking, “Are you O.K.?” For the next few days, I would throw myself on the altar of “clean eating,” only to start the cycle all over again. I called this poisonous relationship between a body I was indoctrinated to hate and food I had been taught to fear “wellness.” This was before I could recognize wellness culture for what it was — a dangerous con that seduces smart women with pseudoscientific claims of increasing energy, reducing inflammation, lowering the risk of cancer and healing skin, gut and fertility problems. But at its core, “wellness” is about weight loss. It demonizes calorically dense and delicious foods, preserving a vicious fallacy: Thin is healthy and healthy is thin. I have an instant pot, I love that device. It has replaced so many other appliances in my kitchen. I did keep the crock pot cuz sometimes I do need two of them. Pressure cooking beans takes a fraction of the cooking time, absolutely fabulous!
Im an idiot.

If you have sour milk in your fridge, you take it out, take a sniff, and dump that crap. You don't put it back in the fridge and think it won't be so bad next week. Unless both of you have changed it isn't going to be different.
Who else remembers?

I didn't go often, not allowed. We went as a family at least once but never stayed all night.

Jan 2019. Quilt for 2 year old granddaughter, just learning her colors. Her mama wanted it to be a rainbow quilt.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
