Religion in a relationship
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 9, 2019:
If said partner is not deeply committed to his belief system there is a possibility. However, you're talking about rural Nebraska and church is social life and identity. Do all other issues line up? If there are children how will they be raised? @SeaMeNebraska, I grew up in Grand Island, it was big enough that not going to church was not a big deal, though in theory my family "belonged" to a church.

HippieChick58 comments on Jun 8, 2019:
I don't think chemistry will necessarily happen on the first date. If there is grounds for a solid friendship I'd follow up on that. Love can develop, or I hope so. I'd have been in your mindset, lets follow this and see where it goes.

HippieChick58 comments on Jun 8, 2019:
You can't debunk it and why do you want to? It is 100% true that for some people religion is an important psychological support. In the US we have this freedom thing that you're free to believe what ever you want to, and if it makes them happy or give psychological support I'm very happy for them. Now if they wanted me to share the delusion there would be some strong disagreement.

HippieChick58 comments on Jun 8, 2019:
I've been single since 2010ish. I was on many dating sites, POF, OKC, Match, eHarmony, Mingle, and some local sites and some I paid for. My outcome: Nada, zilch, less than zero. You're not doing it wrong, there is no way to do it right. I had one long term, and a few shorter. I'm not willing to move, I'm not willing to deal with kids that are greatly younger than my own kids. I will not fall in bed on the first date. I would like a long term partner, and right now it looks like it will be me. Well, with the kitty girls. Could be worse. I'm content with my own company. Seriously, better alone and content than hitched and miserable. BTDT, won't do that again. So I date if I can, and have no expectations of anything changing. So far I have been successful at that.
Does anyone else hate the phrase "I love you" ?
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 8, 2019:
I like the I love yous. I tell my kids/grandkids all the time. I like to tell my kids when I think they are doing good, and how much I appreciate them. I like to point out to them what good parents and good people they are, especially when they're going through a trying time. The hospital I work for has just sent us through training classes called the Language of Caring, it is aimed at improving relations between staff and patients, and between staff and staff. It makes a difference. Acknowledge the struggle, pay attention to me. It keeps patient satisfaction up and avoids escalations and lawsuits. The sad part is that so many of the admin office staff make fun of the training and denigrate it. I'm counting days till I can really retire. For me in my training, I want to know what I did wrong, but damn it, I also want it acknowledged when I have done good. I think compliments are the life blood of relationships. Tell them when they're doing good, tell them how much they mean to you. The other part of this is, ****at any time any of us could be hit by a bus.**** Don't leave your loved ones guessing about how much you care about them. If you don't tell them, they will never be sure. The greatest gift my mom gave me was a card she wrote from the hospital telling me she loved me. She died at age 45, I was 14. She did this for all six of us. When my stepwitch spewed her venom I knew she was wrong, I knew my real mom loved me. @Anonbene thank you for opening up this line of conversation. You took a risk. I haven't read all the responses yet, but sometimes when you open cans of worms like this people can be.... well, less than pleasant. Any time you expose a vulnerability you open yourself, and I'm glad you did.

HippieChick58 comments on Jun 6, 2019:
I have been dealing with sciatica for about 3 months. I've been making lifestyle changes to alleviate the pain. I stopped carrying stuff for any distance, I have a wheeled bag to carry stuff I need to take to work. I no longer sit on my soft comfy sofa, I sit on a firmer chair. The biggest relief I have seen was from doing some yoga stretches/poses for the back, and I lay on the floor every night for about 10 minutes with my feet above my hips at about a 90° angle. There were a few days I was afraid I might need to give it up and go to the doctor, but finally it is waning.

The thing is, most of time marriage is not going to kill you. Back when I married it was the thing to do, there was no other option. I don't regret my last marriage, I have three great kids and some really good experiences. I don't even regret my first marriage, it was a learning experience and I'm fortunate there were no negative repercussions or lasting contacts. That said, I likely won't marry again, largely because there could be negative financial repercussions.

Our kids are so great at bringing joy (& tears).
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 3, 2019:
We usually lived a long way from family, the kid's dad was active duty military when they were growing up. We lived in Washington state when the youngest was 1.5 to 6 years old. The ex's parents usually came out to visit at least once a year. Once we were headed for the airport and the youngest called it "Granny and Papa's house". In her mind that was where they lived. Same area, Becca also referred to our local landmark as Mount Reindeer. I am referring to Mt. Ranier.
Lucky I didn't poke my eyes out with this game.

Actually, I gotta tell you, I don't find him childlike or like a 2-year old at all. I have a two year old granddaughter. She has a bigger vocabulary, more common sense, more respect for others, more decency, more empathy, more intelligence, and far better parents than Donnie Boy ever had or ever will have. I think she reads better too and her tweets make at least as much sense.

HippieChick58 comments on Jun 2, 2019:
I am sorry for your loss. People who don't think they will be good parents or don't want to be parents should not have kids so that was a good decision on your part. If you had kids there would be no guarantee they'd be available for you when you need help due to age issues. I've known lots of folks with kids who regret having them or the kids were not there for them when needed. Your dad likely did the best he could given how his dad was and the era he grew up in. I'm glad you were able to forge a relationship with him. I hope things get better for you on all fronts.

HippieChick58 comments on Jun 2, 2019:
When I was off work during the winter I did go through stuff and get rid of lots of stuff. It feels good. I sold some on eBay, I've given lots to charity drop boxes, and I have thrown away loads. Right now I keep shoes only if they fit and are comfortable for the whole day. My wardrobe turned over while I was off because I lost weight so I got rid of all the too large stuff. I had smaller clothing in storage that is now in use. I purged closets, and cabinets. I had many "what was I thinking" moments. I considered it a start on my "death cleaning." I got rid of (and am still getting rid of) stuff my kids won't want to deal with when I am gone.

Just curious, did anybody think this group would be this big, back when it was created?
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 2, 2019:
Good question! The short answer is no. When Admin wanted to start groups he saw my proclivity for posting Anti Trumps stuff and suggested I start this group. I was pleased at the response from the site, but I really didn't even think about the future and how long we'd last. I've always been really bad at predicting the future. I keep hoping I will wake up one morning and find out the last few years have been a bad dream. Except for the good stuff, I want to keep that. Two of my daughters and I attended the first Women's March when the youngest was at home with her baby, and I dedicated our walk to them. This is my life, I am dedicated to making the world better for that baby and her younger baby cousin. As long as Drumpf is a clear and present danger to the future of the world I will host this group and do my small part to make people aware of what a POS he is.

I love good books. I belong to a book club that is part of our Omaha Metropolitan Area Humanists Association. We read a variety of books, but this looks like it would be a good fit for us. I'm reading a book right now that I also want to recommend to our club, ****Fantasyland, How America Went Haywire - A 500 Year History by Kurt Andersen. Explains how the influences of dreamers, zealots, hucksters, and superstitious groups shaped America's tendency toward a rich fantasy life, citing the roles of individuals from P.T. Barnum to Donald Trump in perpetuating conspiracy theories, self-delusion, and magical thinking****. I take the book to work with me and read at lunch. One of the managers comes by, sees the cover, takes my book and says "follow me." We have just moved into a new building. He takes me to one of the conference rooms which is the Andersen room, with the author's picture on the wall. The conference rooms in this building are named for local celebrities. The author is from Omaha. Another conference room is the Brando room. And I did get my book back.

Jan 2019. Quilt for 2 year old granddaughter, just learning her colors. Her mama wanted it to be a rainbow quilt.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
