The greatest gift you can give somebody is your own personal development.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 12, 2019:
I am taking care of me so I can keep up with the grandbabies. But also so I am not a burden on my kids, or (I need a new phrase for "god forbid") have to move in with one of my kids... or something worse. I have no desire to be a "nurse with a purse" for anyone. I had an encounter in the past with a couple of dudes who I think were looking for just that. Ewww, no thanks. I am improving me for me so I can live the life I want to live. I hope one day to have that partner, but if I don't I still have me.

We tend to think of medical conditions as maladies.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 11, 2019:
People who have Cystic Fibrosis are likely immune to cholera. At one time that may have helped them survive, however now it has no useful purpose. There are a few other conditions that are like that, necessary from an evolutionary standpoint, but no longer useful or needed, and indeed harmful. I have a 30 year old nephew with CF. It is good that you have managed your diabetes so well. I have been pre-diabetic for years. When I stopped working 6 months ago I also stopped eating sugar and started exercising. I am no longer pre-diabetic, and 30ish pounds and a full size smaller. Now I am back to work and having trouble fitting exercise in. But I will continue to abstain from sugar and eat well, so the weight will come off, just slower.
For me... assassination of JFK.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 11, 2019:
For me it was the JFK assassination as well. I was in Kindergarten, I was convinced the world was ending. The adults were crying, the calendar had only one more page, and everything on the TV was sad and dreary. I was SO relieved when mom put up a new calendar.
Why don't other tenants help me shovel snow?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 10, 2019:
When I was a renter it was in the contract that the management handled snow removal, and indeed all maintenance inside and out. You might want to check your lease. If management is not paying you in some form or fashion they may be taking advantage of you, and IF you get hurt they may be liable for your injuries. This could open a can of worms.

It is possible you've been contacted by a potential scammer. We do get a few on here. We try to monitor to keep the site safe, but we don't catch them all. That is one of the downsides of a free site. If you want to PM me with the individual's user name I can check him out. You do have the ability to block people you don't want to be contacting you.
I'm shedding the unwanted that exists in forgotten, needlessly stored boxes occupying my life.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 9, 2019:
I was off work for the past 6 months. One of my goals for my time off was to get rid of the excess and obsolete. I had a few boxes not opened post divorce. One box had about 60 stitchery kits, some never opened. I don't think if I lived to 110 that I could finish them all. I have sold several on eBay and will be selling more. I also went through closets, cabinets, and pantry. I don't think I ever throw anything away. I am more organized now, and have a bit less of a shortfall with limited income for so long.

My kids got to experience a rotary phone at their grandparents house. It amazes and amuses me that in my pocket I carry a phone, camera, computer, atlas, flashlight, address book, calculator, stereo/radio, playlists, several books, photo albums, answering machine, catalogs, medical records, and games. This is likely not an exhaustive list. And this device that has all that information is smaller than that rotary phone. And I remember that we didn't even have a private line when I was younger, we had a party line. How stuff has changed.

As vegans we talk probably more about diet then the rest of it.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 8, 2019:
I tend to be more of a flexitarian. When I am alone I eat pretty much vegetarian and pushing into vegan. When I'm with my kids or my kids come over I fix meals with meat for them and eat whatever they have fixed which usually has meat. I don't need anyone else to eat as I do. I don't want anyone else telling me how I should eat. We're all fully functioning adults and therefore get to make up our own minds about what/when/how to eat or live our lives. Some people treat their diets like a religion. I have left one religion, I'm not about to get tangled up in another.

If you haven't read it yet, the book Toxic Parents by Susan Forward will be a world of help. Check with your local hospitals to see if they have a free or sliding scale counseling program. In my area our Methodist Health System (not for profit hospital system) offers that. Or call a pastor at any United Methodist church and ask if they are aware of any programs like that. I found out about the program in my area from a United Methodist pastor, and you don't have to be a church member or religious in any way to take advantage of that program. And please realize it sounds like your mother is mentally ill. You need to make your health and safety a priority. Stay away from her.

Does age matter in a relationship?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 7, 2019:
If it makes you happy, if he treats you well, if your needs are met and it is a healthy relationship, please don't second guess yourself. Does age matter, IMHO NO. If you are both legal consenting adults what anyone else thinks does not matter. Now if you were 17 and he was much older, I'd be happy to stomp his ass. But you're a mature, seasoned woman. If you're happy then no one else's opinion matters.

Many relationships just don't work out. What's a reason you've ended a relationship?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 7, 2019:
A relationship ended because his mama liked to mess with his mind. She encouraged him to move to out here, and then she hinted her health wasn't so good. She jerked him around this way most of his life, he just wasn't strong enough to stand up to her BS. So it ended because he didn't want me to move to CA, and I really didn't want to, and he couldn't move to NE.
OMG IT'S ME.

I learned the hard way that lack of sleep doesn't kill you, it just makes you wish you were dead. I wear a FitBit, so my sleep is tracked, and my heart rate. It is kinda depressing how little sleep I get sometimes. My kitties often contribute to the lack of sleep. They find it amusing to play with their toys on top of me. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but not in this case.

I grew up in an abusive home, and as some children do I believed it was my fault, or at least much of it was my fault. When I became a parent and my oldest daughter reached the age I was when the serious abuse started, I realized how little control she had, and I had over anything. And that flash of insight that NONE of it was my fault just amazed and freed me. I have all girls and my ex was active duty military, we never lived close to any family until the youngest was almost 12. My kids were never left alone with any member of my birth family. My kids don't know all the details and never will. In discussing this with my younger sister, we're pretty sure our grandparents and great grandparents were abusive for who knows how many generations. But we stopped it for our kids, we are free from that cycle, and I have grown from it. One of my brothers tried some emotional manipulation a couple of years ago, I pushed it right back on him. He hasn't talked to me since. It feels good to be strong, it is freeing to be strong.

My grandmother's neighbor had a cat that liked to sleep in baskets of wet laundry. He went through a cycle in a gas dryer. He got out alive, and was the meanest, toughest SOB cat in the neighborhood. Dogs were afraid of him. There were no other intact male cats in a half mile of where he lived. His ears and tail got broken in that cycle, and from what I remember pads were burned as well. He is lucky to have survived.

Jan 2019. Quilt for 2 year old granddaughter, just learning her colors. Her mama wanted it to be a rainbow quilt.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
