LINKThe necessity of secularist small dissent
Overview: Secularists should not remain silent when religious people offer opinions but should rejoin with small, pleasant disagreement. Secularists often say nothing when they should really speak up. Sometimes taciturnity is merely manners, perhaps thought of as good manners. There is no need to mar a dinner party with a sharp and disagreeable remark, right? No need to set the table on a roar with a cutting witticism offered at a guest’s or a host’s expense. But how many ...

Heather Cox Richardson Yesterday, a decision by Judge David Carter said that Trump had likely committed a federal crime when he was part of a conspiracy to obstruct Congress’s count of the votes of the Electoral College on January 6, 2021. Today, a Trump spokesperson called yesterday’s decision “absurd and baseless.” But the investigation into the events of January 6 is producing more and more evidence about the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and it is ...

LINKWhy tracking COVID-19 case rates still matters
COVID-19 cases in the United States have fallen more than 95% from their peak in January, and on Friday, Hawaii became the last state to roll back its indoor mask mandate. Testing has slowed, and states are scaling back on reporting surveillance data, too. But experts say that tracking new COVID-19 cases is still important — even if it is an imperfect measure. "Dating back to the beginning of the pandemic, we've always known that case numbers were being undercounted. It was never quite ...

Things seem to be looking up as the U.S. crosses into year three of the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccines still do a good job of keeping people alive and out of the hospital. Heather Cox Richardson For all the breathless reports of Russia’s war on Ukraine, it is unclear who is gaining advantage. This is in part because both sides are fighting the war with propaganda as well as with missiles, and it is hard to sort out what is real and what is not. So, for example, the many stories of Ukrainian resistance feed that resistance, while the stories of Russian failures hurt morale....

Heather Cox Richardson As I write tonight, the U.N. National Security Council is meeting to discuss Russian president Vladimir Putin’s recognition of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) as independent states within the country of Ukraine. Russian-backed rebels have been fighting the Ukraine government in those regions since 2014, when Russia invaded Ukraine. LINKEric Trump Got Very Emotional, Literally Almost Cried On Fox News Over The Mistreatment Of His Daddy; And Social Media Destroyed Him
A lot of you know what has hit the fan in TrumpWorld this week, and it’s only Tuesday. Just recently, it seemed we spent the entire week reporting about the new revelations concerning Trump’s blatant mishandling of official White House documents — including ripping documents to pieces that had to be taped back together by aides before being turned over to the National Archives, packing 15 boxes of top-secret and highly confidential documents with him to Mar-a-Lago upon his move from the...

Queen Elizabeth II Has COVID-19. Here's What to Know
After avoiding the virus for almost years, the U.K.’s longest serving monarch, 95-year-old Queen Elizabeth II tested positive for COVID- on Feb. 20. Famous for her stoicism in times of hardship, the Queen is planning to continue working, according to Buckingham Palace. Following a week of scandal for the royal family, during which Prince Andrew agreed to a settlement in a civil sexual assault lawsuit, and the London police opened an investigation into Prince Charles’ charity, the ...

Heather Cox Richardson This afternoon, after a rare four-hour-long meeting of the National Security Council, President Joe Biden canceled a planned trip home to Wilmington, Delaware, tonight. Heather Cox Richardson There are four big stories today. The first is that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has confirmed that it found classified documents among those its staff recovered from former president Donald Trump’s residence at Mar-a-Lago. Heather Cox Richardson In all the chaos surrounding the former president, the actions today of the current president, Democrat Joe Biden, seem to be getting short shrift. Heather Cox Richardson It appears there was a reason for the former president’s unhinged rant of yesterday suggesting that members of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign had spied on him and that “in a stronger period of time in our country, this crime would have been punishable by death.” Trump is likely unhappy because of a letter his accountants, the firm Mazars, sent to the Trump Organization’s chief legal officer on February 9.
