In June I started a quilt made out of fabrics in my stash, it was going to be lap quilt size.

The quilt looks terrific. You must have great patience to sew that much material.

linxminx comments on Nov 27, 2020:
Really, really beautiful!! Do you have your own quilting machine?
HippieChick58 replies on Nov 27, 2020:
No, I take the quilt to a shop that has several long arm machines, and I let them do it for me. They are in the city limits, so they have to obey the mask requirement, but they are not real strict about it, so I don't want to spend more time in there than what I have to. I had thought that after I retire I may take the classes so I can do my own longarming. Long arm machines are really expensive and take up bunches of space. I don't have the space, and I can't afford it.

HippieChick58 replies on Nov 26, 2020:
I have dealt with carpal tunnel in the past, I never needed surgery and it has not bothered me in years. I do have arthritis in my L thumb, and it bothers me when I knit or crochet. I have to be careful when opening doors or bottles with my left hand. Other than that, I know arthritis and carpal tunnel can be debilitating. I am grateful to be able to use my hands as I do. I've been sewing for over 50 years.
Don't bother me, I'm recharging. 😂

HippieChick58 replies on Nov 26, 2020:
@Kynlei Miss Millie, my heart cat was fine when she was little, but about age 4 the vet noticed an eye condition, I no longer remember what it was called. We kept it under control for many years, but when she was about 11 it was out of control and she lost her eyes. She lived well for another four years as a blind kitty. She always found the litter box, and found me, she loved to cuddle.

@James121 I am of the opinion that celebrating people is a good thing. Christmas I don't give a darn about, but I was delighted to meet my grandchild and celebrations of her birth are quite in order. If not celebrating birthdays gives you satisfaction go for it, the rest of us will be over here at the party having a good time. Just a point of reference, I "celebrated" my 19th birthday in USArmy basic training by going to gas chamber training. It is hard to have a suckier birthday. My mom died when she was 45, and each year past 45 for me has been a celebration that I'm still here. My mom never got to know any of her grandchildren, and my children never got to know her which is a tragic loss. Passing 45 was a milestone for me, and every birthday past that is a celebration.

@JeffMurray Do you think you'd be able to convince a child of something their parents told them was true? You wouldn't be able to with a young child. You might with an older child, but why set them up for tension in the family. They're dependent upon their parents usually until 18 or 22. Many children figure out the truth anyway and just learn to lay low while living at home. My kids sure did, it is only as adults that they push back to their ultraconservative Fox news watching daddy. But unless you know the family situation intimately, don't mess with family dynamics. You could put them in an stressful if not abusive situation.

@JeffMurray I don't think that is a battle you should choose. Short of killing the children, the laws are pretty much totally behind the parents. That doesn't necessarily mean it is a good thing, but parents do get to make those decisions. Yes, there are lots of people having kids that should not even be trusted with stuffed animals, but such is the society we live in. Whatever my or your opinions are, we cannot interfere with parental rights. ALL indoctrination however IS the right of the parent to perform, at whatever cost it is to society. Whether it is right or wrong, it IS.

My mom had a White sewing machine when we were growing up, and that was so slow compared to the Pfaff.

@JeffMurray Indoctrination is a parental right, as sad as that sounds. When you are the parent you get to make those decisions, and remember young children live in a rich fantasy world. My 3.5 year old granddaughter had a sleep over with me several weeks ago. She asked if there were monsters under my bed. I told her Grammy (me) was tougher and meaner than any old monster, they were afraid to come out. There is a very interesting book that my book club just finished. It is called: Relax, It's Just God: How and Why to Talk to Kids About Religion When You're Not Religious by Wendy Thomas Russell. Even when you try to bring your kids up atheist or agnostic you will still brush up against religion. The best thing you can do is teach your kids about ALL religions and the whys of those religions. Beside, cultural literacy will make them far better citizens.

@JeffMurray Ideally they will never have to leave religion as they will never have known religion. My children were brought up in the church, now two of them are openly atheist, the third was going to church with her dad pre covid but I think it was to keep daddy happy. The oldest and youngest have children, and the other is the favorite auntie. With the influence of Atheist Auntie, Grammy (me) and another uncle that is ardently atheist, the children (2 so far, will double next year) will grow up knowing not everyone believes in any gods, and why they don't, and will have opportunities to learn about all the options. Yes, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Ideally our schools should teach religious literacy, so everyone knows about other religions and lack of religion. I think it would make us better world citizens. Some people need that crutch, or comfort, of someone in charge and the possibility of a better/different life. Not all people will be logical. But everyone should be exposed to other ideas so they can make their own decisions.

@TomMcGiverin Given my history and experience I know I'm not like most other women, and I don't expect all men to be the same. I've had too much experience to ever think that. I've always "known" I was not cut from the same cloth as most women, and my work experience has confirmed that over and over again. Why should all men be cut from the same cloth? Most women don't spend several years in the Army and move 23 times in their life. Of course most men don't either... I've probably been judged on the basis of "most women", I can't swear to that, and it doesn't matter. It is what it is. I'm single and I'm OK with it cuz I"m a realist. I'm not wasting away for companionship, and I'm quite productive and fulfilled. Language is important in forums like this. Instead of why do women/men, it should be phrased why do some women/men? I usually fall back on "All generalizations are no damn good, including this one."
