LINKIs Recycling Worth It Anymore? People On The Front Lines Say Maybe Not : NPR
Recycling works, but it's not magic. As America continues to lead the world in per capita waste production, it's becoming more and more clear that everybody –- manufacturers and consumers — "over-believes" in recycling. This is a story about responsibility, and what happens when everyone keeps trying to pass it off to the next person. And what happens, when finally, there is no next person. This video is based in part on Throughline's podcast episode "The Litter Myth."

On May 25, 2020, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds after arresting him for allegedly trying to pass a counterfeit $20 bill. The jury found Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. He faces up to 75 years in prison, and will be sentenced in two months. America today is caught in a plague of gun violence. It wasn’t always this way. Americans used to own guns without engaging in daily massacres. Indeed, it always jumps out at me that the infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre of 1929, when members of one Chicago gang set up and killed seven members of a rival gang, was so shocking it led to legislation that prohibits automatic weapons in the U.S. Eighty-nine years later, though, in 2018, another Valentine’s Day shooting at Marjory ...

Drop-down menus on online forms: They could be the death of us. On Thursday, journalist and programmer Dan Nguyen pointed out a darkly comic incident report connected to a flight over the summer. According to CNN, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has scrapped the idea of the “America First Caucus” after considerable pushback, now claiming that she had not approved the platform released on Friday and announced by her own spokesperson. I have been thinking a lot about Republican lawmakers like Greene lately, and about the Republican Party these days. Let us be clear. Republicans do not want an infrastructure bill at all for two reasons: it will put the final nail in the coffin of their “government spending destroys the economy” mantra they have used (and, official Washington has more-or-less swallowed) for 50 years; and it will make President Biden and Democrats look good going into the next two election cycles with “it’s morning again in America” memes. LINKShe Gave Birth To Her Own Children, Then A Michigan Judge Ruled Her To Be A Surrogate | Above the Law
This is really tangled up, the judge needed the wisdom of Solomon, and he fell way short of that mark. There are many ways to form a family, and all families deserve equal respect under the law. By ELLEN TRACHMAN April 7, 2021 at 11:42 AM A lot of surprising things happen when the use of assisted reproductive technology slams up against outdated family law doctrines. I see a lot of unexpected cases that end up in this column. This case is actually shocking to me. Reciprocal IVF ...

LINKLetters From An American 04/07/2021
Last night, commentator Kevin Williamson published a piece in National Review justifying voter suppression by suggesting that “the republic would be better served by having fewer—but better—voters.” Representatives, he says, “are people who act in other people’s interests,” which is different from doing what voters want. This is the same argument elite slaveholder James Henry Hammond made before the Senate in 1858, when he defended the idea that Congress should recognize the ...

LINKBREAKING NEWS! FFRF lawsuit ends religious test to register to vote in Alabama - Freedom From Religion Foundation
Good news for our sides!! The Freedom From Religion Foundation has attained a huge constitutional victory for secular voters in Alabama. FFRF sued the Alabama secretary of state last October on behalf of four Alabama citizens who encountered and objected to a religious test to register to vote. Now that the state of Alabama has amended all its voter registration forms to allow citizens to opt out of the religious oath, both online and in printed forms, the national state/church ...

LINKFirst toilet paper, now there's a ketchup packet shortage | Food and Cooking | omaha.com
First, it was toilet paper. Then cleaning supplies were impossible to find. Now? It's ketchup. Before you dump a dozen bottles in your grocery cart, however, know that it's the individual packets that are hard to find, the Wall Street Journal reported. "The pandemic turned many sit-down restaurants into takeout specialists, making individual ketchup packets the primary condiment currency for both national chains and mom-and-pop restaurants," WSJ wrote. "Packet prices are up 13% since ...

LINKPrison looms for Iowa man after face-mask fight: ‘If I have it, you have it!’ | Omaha State and Regional News | omaha.com
The real title should be STUPID PEOPLE! This is another reason I'm glad to not go shopping right now. A Des Moines man is facing a mandatory 10-year prison sentence after being accused of pulling down his COVID-19 face mask and spitting on a fellow retail customer while yelling, “If I have it, you have it!” Police and court records indicate Shane Michael, 42, went to a Vision 4 Less eyewear store in Des Moines on Nov. 11. While there, Michael was wearing his face mask pulled down ...

LINKHow Men Treat Women They Find Unfuckable
TWs - talk about body size and body shaming. Dozens of women say that after a change in physical appearance — gaining weight, aging or becoming ill — they have been either ignored or treated like shit by men When Anne, a 31-year-old administrative assistant in Chicago, noticed that two colleagues in her workplace were both obsessed with the New York Times crossword, she thought it would be nice to introduce them. “He was a 50-year-old guy who I’d occasionally go to lunch with, and...

LINKThe first step to stop corporations from profiting from incarceration in the United States | Transnational Institute
Over the past decades, private corporations have increased their control over prison services in the United States and around the world. Despite enormous lobbying efforts by the private players, citizens have started to reject this agenda of profiting from the criminal justice system, and instead demand to return prison management to public authorities. Biden has announced an end to renewing federal private prison contracts, which should be the starting point for wider changes. On 26 January ...

LINKHow an Abstinence Pledge in the ’90s Shamed a Generation of Evangelicals
The Christian “purity” movement promoted a strict view of abstinence before marriage. But two decades later, some followers are grappling with unforeseen aftershocks. To the uninitiated, Christianity’s evangelical movement can seem like a monolith that brooks no dissent on certain core issues: Same-sex relationships are sinful, men’s spiritual dominance over women is divinely ordained and, on the political front, Donald J. Trump was an improbable but nonetheless valued protector of ...

LINKSimulation: Why You Need High Vaccination Rates To Stop A Pandemic : Shots - Health News : NPR
What will it take to finally halt the spread of the coronavirus in the U.S.? To answer that question, we've created a simulation of a mock disease we're calling SIMVID-19. When you click "Run Simulation" above, you are witnessing how a disease can spread through a population and how increased levels of vaccination can stop it in its tracks. We've chosen to simulate a fake disease since there are too many unknowns to simulate the course of COVID-19. There are common features in how any ...

A few weeks ago, my partially vaccinated partner and my wholly unvaccinated self got an invitation to a group dinner, held unmasked and indoors. There’d be Thai food for 10, we were promised, and two über-immunized hosts, more than two weeks out from their last Moderna doses. And what about everyone else? I asked. Would they be fully vaccinated, too? Well, came the response. Not really. Some would be, some wouldn’t. But it had been so long—weren’t we close enough? The answer was ...

LINKLetters From An American 04/05/2021
For people sick of news, there is nothing happening that cannot wait, so tonight’s letter is a good one to skip. Otherwise, there are lots of developing stories today. Top of the list is the story of Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who is implicated in what appears to be a significant sex scandal involving underage girls. Running a close second is the story Shane Goldmacher at the New York Times broke this weekend: in the closing days of the 2020 election season, the Trump campaign ...

The Republican outrage over Major League Baseball moving the All-Star game out of Georgia after the passage of the state’s new voter suppression law reveals a bigger crisis in American democracy: the mechanics of our current system do not reflect the will of the majority. Consumer-driven corporate America is increasingly throwing its weight against the new voter suppression measures across the country. While MLB and Coca-Cola are out front on the new Georgia voting law, American Airlines, ...

LINKReligion is a driving force behind the gender wage gap, study finds
I can't say this surprises me too much. New research published in the Academy of Management Journal indicates that religion perpetuates the gender wage gap. This is fascinating! On March 12, the City of Minneapolis agreed to pay George Floyd’s family $27 million for his wrongful death via the knee of a police officer. The efforts of Republican state legislators in 43 states to suppress voting have made the rubber of Republicans politics meet the road of reality.
