I'm in the burbs, the far edge of the city, for the moment. The city is encroaching. I am 15 to 20 minutes from work with all the city amenities nearby. I'd like to be more rural, but living alone and working full time I don't see that happening. I have a small garden, and mostly ignore the HOA.

How does the person in question treat those who serve him or her? Are they patient and friendly with the wait staff, the grocery store checker, etc? Are they patient with the small snafus of life? Can they untangle a mess of christmas tree lights without cursing? Do they like dogs, cats, and small children? How do they treat those who are differently abled? Those are some of the things I look for.

It depends on how much they talk about them and HOW they talk about them. If there is a huge amount of unresolved anger, or disrespect then it is a red flag. I talk about my ex because I still see him fairly frequently, the kids like to do family birthdays and holidays. We're amicable. I am not angry with him, I am pretty indifferent, I think. We spent 25 years together and have kids and grandkids, we are linked whether we like it or not.

I don't want someone who needs to be joined at the hip with me. There are many things I do that are very solo activities. My sewing room is set up for one, for example. So I have my activities I want him to have his activites and interests. But the "big" stuff, politically, religion or lack there of, other values we should share. We need to have some interests and activities in common or otherwise why be together. If he is a social butterfly that would be great, because that would balance my hermit tendencies as long as we are respectful of each others needs. I don't want a male carbon copy of me, I want someone who fills in my deficits and adds a new dimension to me/for me and I to him.

I had lunch at Panera, then did some shopping, and ran an errand. I am debating about going to a movie, or dinner out, or both. As for the rest of the weekend, I hope to sleep in.

For a year I was a geographical single parent. My ex was in Korea. The kids and I moved to Belleville, IL. The inlaws were 45 minutes away in St. Louis. Scott AFB was 30 minutes the opposite direction. The youngest was 9 months when we moved there, it was 1992, pre cell phones. My nightmare was that I would put the baby in the van, throw my purse on the front seat, lock the door and slam it shut, and realize my keys were in my purse now locked in the car. To this day I am anal about my keys, I always know where they are.

In 1996 we got a golden retriever, Chief. In 2000 we got the Milennium Kitten, aka Millie. Chief weighed about 75 pounds, Miss Millie less than 5 when we got her. Chief was trained to sit and wait for release when we put his food down. So food goes down, Chiefy is drooling. We released him and Miss Millie ran between his feet and got the bowl first, and started eating. Chief looked at me as if to say "mooooommmmmm, she's eating my food!" I said Chiefy honey, you're bigger than she is. But I scooped the little pill up and let Chief eat in peace. She groomed him, and I knew that was going to be one ugly hairball. She beat him up good, and he just let her. I miss the both of them.

My baby loves to carry my pens off, batteries (still don't know where she got that, I live alone.) She carries marbles, small empty spools (thread spools, I sew, and I gave her the empty ones). Then she drops them on the laminate floors and chases them around, they make an interesting noise. One or both of the freaks are busy cleaning off table tops and book case shelves. I can't find my lip balm tonight because NOTHING is on the table top. I need to stop working so I can monitor these hell cats better.

I had a job once that I traveled some, and I would eat alone then. I would carry a book. Now I rarely travel, and I don't usually go to restaurants for meals as I'm too cheap. But sometimes I do. I try to take a book, newspaper, or my phone. I very rarely eat in my car, and at home it is not unusual for me to eat on the sofa with my laptop on my lap.... like right now.
