Ya know, this idjit makes me shake my head so often I'm gettin dizzy.
It has been a very gloomy birthday.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 11, 2018:
Birthdays can be hard, and I truly feel your pain, but let me give you some perspective. My 19th brithday I was in Basic Training in the Army. That was the day we went to Tear Gas training. I spent many birthdays away from family and loved ones while in the Army, and because of my dysfunctional family I might not have even gotten a card. I worked night shift on more than one birthday. So fast forward to today. I'm 60, divorced, haven't had a real date in probably a year and haven't had a relationship in much longer. I work too many hours, and I live with two cats. My kids are doing well but busy in their own lives. Yes, I am familiar with depression, anxiety, insominia, and panic attacks. Yes, I have toyed with an exit strategy, but I'm more afraid of pain and putting my kids through pain than I am of sticking around. So I took a look at my life and removed what was not working and focus on what makes me happy and gives me peace. I found some groups of atheists/agnostics and I particpate enough to satisfy my need for other people. I cut off several people that were not worth the effort to maintain the relationship. My life isn't perfect, but it's what I've got. And in the long run I'm better off than lots of people. I frequently ask myself if my problems are first world problems. There are two other guidelines I use. One is a line from Dr. Phil, **"how's that working for you?" **I ask myself that frequently and it it isn't working I work on changing it. And that is my other guideline. **People only change when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of changing.** What is it in your life that is causing you pain, and how can you fix it. That was the criteria I used when I decided on divorce. It hasn't been easy post divorce, and I traded one set of problems for another, but it was my choice. Hang in there, what I have learned is that nothing lasts forever. The sun will come out another day. You don't know how strong you are until the only option is to be strong. And my final cliche for you is that tough times really don't last, but tough people do. They may be cliches, but that doesn't mean they aren't true.
What is your opinion of Mr. Rogers and the fact that he was a Presbyterian minister?

Who's got a religious name?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 10, 2018:
When I had my girls I was looking for strong classic names, and not named after any immediate family members. Apparently several of my cousins had the same idea because some of the cousins used the same names about that time as well. I have Sarah, Michelle, Rebecca; which are all really biblical. My name is Paula, so feminized of the Apostle Paul, the miscogynist of the century. However I was a shortened version of Pauline, or Paulina who were my grandmother and great aunt.

How else do you break societal conventions, besides being agnostic?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 10, 2018:
I avoid potentially toxic chemicals by making my own lip balm, lotions, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. I eat organic when I can, grow some of my own food, and eat mostly vegetarian. I don't waste paper by using toilet paper, I use cloth personal wipes that I wash and reuse. I don't have cable, when/if I watch TV it is streaming. I like shopping at estate sales for stuff that I can either reuse, or resell. I don't buy when I can make. And that is a good start.
If you're not married, would you marry again?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 9, 2018:
I can say with 99% certainty that I will never remarry. If I did it would mess up some retirement benefits I am entitled to. If my future potential long term is rich as Croesus I may reconsider, The liklihood of that happening.... I'm pretty sure I'm going to die single.

Which one of your teenage years was the best?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 9, 2018:
My teenaged years were generally horrible. I had a step witch from age 14, she had a gestapo mindset. She bullied my dad, his greatest mistake ever was remarrying 6 months after my mom died. I could not go anyplace besides work, church, and school without her permission, and she wanted to control my paycheck. My dad did put his foot down then. She would not let me get a driver's license. It was like she sucked all the joy out of life. She was just a mean, unhappy woman,. I joined the Army at 18 to get out of her house. My sisters were sent off or rescued to live with other relatives and my brothers were out of the house. Basic Training was better than her house.
How irrational is society's pretense that many things like masturbation, menstruation and coitus ...
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 9, 2018:
When my girls were age 7 I probably had not talked to them about menstruation. But then again, I talked and still talk about anything and everything so they might have had a clue. But "the talk" no. I did have tampons and pads around, and they'd snoop in my bathroom often enough. Hmmmm, I might ask my girls about this next time we're together. The youngest had to have had a clue, given when she was 7 her older sister was 14. You are right that we don't talk openly about menstruation, however, we also don't talk about urine or feces either. Everyone knows we do it, it just isn't discussed. Same as for masturbation and/or coitus, I assume everyone does and it's no big deal to me either way.

Tips for moving out of state
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 8, 2018:
I have moved 23 times in my life, 21 of the moves as an adult. Unless your move is paid for by someone else, you have to make some choices. Take only the stuff you cannot replace or absolutely need. If you can drive there, keep the car. To make friend check out meet up groups. For a job, start looking now, start polishing the resume now. Read Askamanager.org for resume and job search advice. As to what you should know, you have local area experts that you're moving in with, ask them. Have fun! It is a new adventure.
What do you do for a living?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 8, 2018:
I am a claims examiner for Short Term Disability. The fun part is when I say I work STD claims I get funny looks. So I deal with people who have had a close encounter with the medical profession and now I get to tell them whether or not they can get 60% or so of their basic weekly income. I have a guy on disability now how had a chain saw kick back and he took a good gash out of his foot. I've had a few claimants pass on. The worst part of the job is writing denial letters, although sometimes I get some satisfaction out of it. Sometimes it is talking to the claimants, people can be so rude. I told a woman this week if she continued to talk over me I'd hang up. I'm responsible for about 100 active claims, so we're busy! I don't touch every claim every day, but some days my phone does not stop ringing.

How are you handling your Facebook page?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 8, 2018:
I don't do anything differently on FB. I post what I like and let the chips fall where they may. I lost a few "friends" over my political postings, I have no idea if I have lost any over religion. I am friends with only one coworker, and a few former coworkers and lots of family. I'd say my political postings are drawing the most ire. I have a cousin's son who is a republifuck gun lover, we clash on occasion. I either delete his comments or ignore. The family either ignores me or agrees with me. I yam what I yam and don't give a damn what anyone thinks.
Two recent experiences reminds me of what we always know but easily forget.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 8, 2018:
My mom died at 45 of ovarian cancer. I have considered anything past 45 to be an unexpected gift. My double cousin died at 59 of glioblastoma. She was 5 years older than I was. (double cousin: her mom and my mom were sisters, her dad and my dad were brothers) Another two first cousins have passed before age 60. And then I work in Short Term disability claims. One of my claimants is out not working due to grief. Her life partner was a pedestrian hit by a car, he was in his early 30s, lingered for 6 weeks in the ICU. If you knew today would be your last day, what would you do differently? How do you know today won't be your last day? Live every day like your last.

My Philosophy about life is that we should be journey oriented and not goal oriented.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 7, 2018:
It helps that I'v never really had a "goal" aside from making sure my kids grew up to be reasonably efficient and productive adults. That goal was exceeded. Now I'm just trying to hang aound with style, panache, and grace until I can retire. Or trying to not get fired until I can retire so I can keep health benefits. Whichever works. I've never had a good answer to the "where do you see yourself in X years" question. Life take too many twists and turns. Sometimes they just give you expensive pee, but if you have a deficiency or don't eat well, vitamins might be necessary. I don't get much sunlight, and I've been Vitamin D deficient before. So I take a Vit D supplement becasue seriously the effects of that deficiency did not help my life at all. I take a B vitamin supplement, it helps with mood. I take a few others. Maybe I take too many, but I'm finally in a better place healthwise and I'm going to be really careful about changing things.

How long has it been and how old are the kids? If the kids are elementary aged I wouldn't be in a hurry to introduce anyone to them until I was pretty sure it was going to be long term. My kids are adults and I'd probably introduce a steady guy after a couple of months. Also, how long has she been divorced from the father of the children? It the home life pretty stable for the kids? Genders of the kids? Seriously, I respect a woman who puts her kids first, she's a good mom. And when she does introduce you to the kids it means you've made the cut, honor that. For moms, our kids are our biggest area of vulnerability. I will protect my kids with my life if I need to.

What I also know is addiction is a disease, it is not a judgement of anyone's self control or worth. It is in my mind a type of cancer that is damn hard to cure because relapses are like a metastasize of the disease. It is a disease that causes people to break laws from time to time, but it does not make them criminals

What's better: renting or owning a home?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 3, 2018:
I chose ownership, but it isn't always a picnic. I had to put in a new AC in July 2016 and probably didn't make the best decision. And now my roof is leaking. My Son In Law is in construction and when the new roof was put on his dad was my contractor. Dad later decamped and left SIL with a mess. But SIL took a look at the roof today and can't figure out why it is leaking. On the other hand the mortgage is less than renting similar space or an apartment. I have an attached garage. I have a garden. I don't have people coming in while I am gone and leaving my door unlocked. I don't have sumo wrestling or smokers upstairs. My SIL is good about doing repairs for me. I've painted it the way I want it done. If I put holes in the walls it is my business. In the long run, ownership is better for me. I have space to do what I want to do. I'm thinking as I get closer to retirement I might downsize, not sure, but I have a few years.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
