When I was 19 and in the Army I married a fellow soldier. He was 28 and a Kentucky farmboy. It didn't take me long to realize I made a horrible mistake, especially once I met his family and saw where he lived. The level of what I saw as ignorance was amazing, and this was 41 years ago. The casualness of "keeping it within the family". To be open of something so damaging and taboo. To this day I cringe when I have dealings with people from Kentucky, and with my job that happens more often than I'd like. The marriage did not last and we never had kids. We had no reason to keep in contact. But even as young and stupid as I was, I knew so much of what he told me and he believed was utter and total BS. His plan was to get out of the Army and go home and raise hogs and tabacca. And now that I'm thinking of the few months we were together I feel an overwhelming need for a shower.

I don't carry baggies in my pockets, those never leave their designated spot. My keys I am quite anal about, always go back in my pocket after use. My phone the same way. My billfold is always in my purse but I don't worry about it as much as as my phone and keys.

I like straightforwardness and honesty as I try to be. I'm a tad out of the ordinary and I am upfront about it. I'm not everyone's cup of tea and that is OK. It's not a one size fits all world. I like to know what other people value. I agree, I don't care about toys like motorcycles, cars, campers and stuff. As those things are not something I value it is not a good omen. I want a friend. I need to get along with someone fully clothed before I care to take my clothes off. I want my best buddy ever, once that is established, all else will follow naturally.

I filled ziploc sandwhich bags with cotton sox, lip balm, individually packaged wet wipes, a mylar space blanket, and $5. I keep them in my car. When I see someone with a sign on the street asking for money I will hand him a bag. I read an article that says stuff like this is what the homeless need most.

Worst: long, long days at work. I fell horribly behind, still having software issues. And I slipped on the ice in the parking garage at work and have a nice bruise on my knee. Why, oh why is it snowing in April? Best: got a cute picture of grandbaby, and a middle daughter asked what I wanted to do for Mother's day and was enthusiastic about it.

I put my girls on bcp after their periods started, partly because they had painful periods. We also discussed how babies are made. They were also restricted to dating boys in their grade so the maturity issue did not cause problems. My oldest skirted the dating restriction by dating guys she worked with that were older. But she was smarter than they were and was able to see through their BS. She did get her heart broken. The second got in trouble in other ways. The youngest seemed to pick nice guys,and in her grade. She kinda glossed over the babies talk, and her dad caught her and her guy friend in a slightly alarming situation. He asked me to have a talk with her. I asked her what she would call stupid teenagers who got carried away. She answered she'd just call them stupid teenagers. I told her most would likely call them parents. It was soooo cool to watch the light dawn in her eyes, really like seeing the snyapses connecting. She gave me my first grandchild at 25, the oldest will give me my second grandchild next month, and she's 33.

The first time I realized I was depressed I was in Germany, 409th ASA company. I didn't need to be diagnosed, I just realized I was very not happy. Sometime after that I did see a counselor. And off an on through my life I've had periods of depression/anxiety. I've been medicated a few times.

I eat seasonal. During the winter (non garden months) I make and freeze casseroles in individual portions, usually vegetarian and grab one to heat for lunch every day. I may also take veggies and hummus. Or I take leftovers, especially the day after I have my kids over for dinner, if they leave any left overs. During the summer I eat salads from the veggies grown in my garden, and some from the farmer's market. Again, mostly vegetarian. I snack on mixed nuts at work. I like to eat cheap and healthy.

Generally I try to limit sugars to less than 50 grams a day and limit simple carbs as well. I eat high fat because that is where satiety comes from. When I keep to this way of eating I can lose weight, lost over 50 pounds 2 years ago. Then I changed jobs, they keep feeding us, and the stress level is huge. I'm getting it back under control, but it is a struggle. Generally I eat less meat. I eat seafood, dairy and eggs when I do want animal protein. I eat mostly vegetable protein, lots of veggies, some fruits, and very low sugars. I did Atkins several years ago which worked great, and then I started traveling for my job. I think I've tried most diets.

Although it is a PITA, I think you need to confront the offenders, we all do. Explain why that is racist/sexist. Too often it continues to happen because no one mentions it. They take the path of least resistance. I know, it is easier to let it slide or block, but if the offender is told often enough that they are offensive, hopefully they will hear it and make changes. And the cool thing is how others on the site will back you up. I love the support. Of course the offender is off in his own little worlds, but one can hope a little crack will be made.

I'm in the burbs, the far edge of the city, for the moment. The city is encroaching. I am 15 to 20 minutes from work with all the city amenities nearby. I'd like to be more rural, but living alone and working full time I don't see that happening. I have a small garden, and mostly ignore the HOA.

How does the person in question treat those who serve him or her? Are they patient and friendly with the wait staff, the grocery store checker, etc? Are they patient with the small snafus of life? Can they untangle a mess of christmas tree lights without cursing? Do they like dogs, cats, and small children? How do they treat those who are differently abled? Those are some of the things I look for.
