Then there was a low ranking sailor whose last name was Stain. So every day he was called Seaman Stain. And then AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio and Television Service) had a spokesperson whose last name was Minor and his rank was Major. So we had Major Minor on TV most days back in the early 80s.

LOL!! 100% serious, I worked a referral hotline for a children's hospital. One of my referrals had the name of Zion Emmanuel. Who names a child that? Why don't you just tattoo "kick me" on his forehead. And then there was the baby girl named Vagina. Mom was high and ignorant, thought it was the most beautiful name she ever heard. She was like 14 or 15 as well.
Something on a lighter vein.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 23, 2018:
Married the first time for less than 2 years, I was 19 when I got married. Married the second time at 25 and was married for over 25 years. I forgot about the first one, and really never mentioned it to my kids, til I was with the youngest getting a passport and they asked if I had any other names. I said "oh yeah," and my daughter's voice went up an octave and a half and she said "what?!?!?!?" It was funny.

Are you able to allow others to be who they are with out judgement?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 23, 2018:
Allllll day long we have to make judgments. Will I make it through that traffic light before it changes? Will I be able to stop before I hit that Cadillac in front of me. I make multiple judgments an hour in my job. I choose my clothing for the day on whether or not I will be sufficiently warm in my office or house. When I meet people one of the first things I notice is teeth, (weird, I know) and there are a few judgement to be made there. Yes, I can allow others to be who they are, but I am also judging them. Judgement doesn't necessarily mean a negative thing, it is more assessing information. Our ancestors had to rely on split second judgments to stay alive, as sometimes we do (stopping distance).

Homelessness... what are the solutions?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 23, 2018:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25852784-evicted This book was so enlightening, how laws and rules are created to help keep poor people poor and sometimes homeless. Did you know in certain zip codes if you are a renter and call 911 the police will complain to your landlord, and by complain I mean they will strongly suggest that the landlord evict you using nuisance laws. The poor pay a greater portion of their income on rent than the general population. Most marginal housing rents are exorbitant for what you are getting. As to what to do, there are many possible solutions. One is tiny house communities. Provide small efficient homes to the less able community. That will help them find some stability to move up. Mental health treatment needs to be unstigmatized and treatments need to be more available. And substance abuse also needs to be unstigmatized. Treat the underlying problems, but you need stability of housing to do this. I don't know all the answers, but I know the US has the resources to make a huge dent in the homeless issue, if only that is where our resources were directed instead of giving more money to the already rich.

Should a man be allowed to force a woman to carry his child?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 22, 2018:
My belief is that any time you have unprotected sex you are taking the chance of pregnancy. If you don't want a baby, don't start one. I had birth control discussion with my girls when they were in middle school. There are too many forms of BC that are fairly simple, and if you can't use one, don't have sex. That being said, guys also need to wrap their whoppers. I do agree that it is a woman's body and a woman's choice, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Abortion is not easy. I know it would be awkward to have the conversation, but ask your partner if they are protected and what if we do start a baby.

If I understand this correctly, if I am new and I want to discuss something and I'm told we've done that already, that I should go check out the old stuff. I think it is the nature of groups like this that topics get revisited frequently, If you've already contributed your $.02 then you can ignore. Some of us might like to see what the newer folks have to say or add things we didn't think of the first (and possibly second and third....) time around. I think that is the nature of conversations. I wouldn't want newer folks to feel like there are hurdles and insider conversations going on.

No company should have the CEO making 1000 times what his employees make. The hoarding of wealth is one of the major ills of our society.

What I do with the gift is not their business, but then I don't have relatives to keep happy and friends that would give gifts are fellow Humanists or Atheists.

We were an active church going family when the kids were growing up. My kids pretty much figured out on their own that it was BS, going off to college helped. We were a military family, so away from biological family and the church was our family and social life. I led several groups, did bible studies, the kids went to VBS, sunday school, church, choir and church camp. Their dad got more and more uninvolved with them as he got more involved with his religious website. Post divorce I tried to find a church, but the truth is churches are not welcoming of middle aged single women. Then I was introduced to Zeitgeist, and did some additional reading and it was like an awakening. My kids attitude was "what took you so long."
