HippieChick58 comments on Mar 15, 2022:
Coincidental that you posted this today. Today would have been my mother's 95th birthday, however she died 50 years ago. Her name was Minnie Mae. Two granddaughters carry her middle name, and my middle daughter was born on her birthday. Her most recently born great granddaughter also carries her middle name. (As luck would have it it is also the middle name of one of her dad's grandmothers.) When I came to realize that xianity was a lie and there is no life in heaven after death I went through a period of mourning that I'd never see my mother again, or see the baby that I lost earlier. I believe as long as someone remembers us we never completely die. And yes, this is why I quilt and craft. There will be reminder to my kids, and grands, and hopefully great grands that I lived and I loved them.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 12, 2022:
I live alone and mostly keep all the door open, always. Except the sewing room, there is too much that the cats should not get into in there. One cat eats thread... And plants. I close the door to the guest bedroom/home office only when the grands are here, as the work computer is in there. Thursday evening while the grands were here one of the cats was shut in there, which was OK. She wasn't going to come out while grands and their parents were here anyway. I've always kept the doors open while I'm sleeping.

Be happy with what you have, instead of yearning for what you're missing.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 10, 2022:
I choose to be happy instead of focusing on what I don't have. My kids love and respect me, my grands are healthy and thriving. I have enough to pay my bills, some luxuries, and some savings. I have my hobbies and my circle of friends. Yes, my car is 15 years old, but it's paid for and running fine. No I don't have a huge flat screen TV, but I don't want one. I don't watch TV, and that might be why I am content. I think TV advertising is designed to make you want to spend money you don't have. I have a job where I am treated with respect and that pays pretty well. I have outlived my own mother by 19 years, and have now lived almost 50 years without her. She never met any of her grandchildren. I don't have a significant other, but I'm not sure how I would find time for one, although if the right person shows up I will seriously consider how to manage that. All things considered I am doing quite well.

At one time we took over the credit cards that the NRA was issuing, so yeah, lots of NRA members; those wacked out republican nutbags. I don't engage. Just don't engage. Some do want to draw us into discussion, but all the calls are timed and I'm trying to keep my "average handle time" down, and the calls are recorded. If they get close to the edge of my comfort zone I ask if there is anything else I can do for them and I wrap it up. I like my job, for the first time in years I have a job I like and it pays damn well also for the first time in years. No way do I want to screw this up. I will be polite and I will be bland as vanilla pudding. Just DO NOT engage. They are not worth it. I like the ones who swear at me, I get to hang up on them. I also flip the bird lots of time. I work from home, and I'm sure my team mates do the same thing. Yes, people are f'king cray cray, if I didn't have my kids and my Humanist book club I'd be bonkers, fer sure.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 6, 2022:
Learned helplessness. If he does it badly someone else will take over. My ex had been a good, or at least experimental cook when I met him. He quickly learned to be inefficient in the kitchen. We agreed he would cook dinner on Saturdays. He cooked pizza every week, from scratch, and every week it got worse. Then we had another child, and then we moved, and he never cooked a dinner again. When he lived alone he reheated convenience meals from the grocery store. Now he lives in a retirement center, and from what I understand he eats in the dining room and lets them do the cooking. When we have extended family meals he never contributes, which really pisses me off. He has more money than all of us, and I don't like subsidizing him.

I am thankful for every birthday I've had. My mom passed at age 45, I was 14. She didn't get to see me graduate, get married, or meet my children. She would have been an awesome grammie. For that reason, I cherish every birthday of mine, and my kids and grands. I will cherish and celebrate every milestone no matter how small. My 19th birthday was gas chamber training in Army basic training at Ft. Jackson SC. I even cherish that birthday. When someone complains about bad birthdays it's hard to top that one. (I gotta admit there are some awful birthdays that make mine seem insignificant.) I celebrated my mom's birthday by giving her a granddaughter on her birthday, and two of her grands have her middle name, and one of the great grands. Enjoy the birthdays, someone is glad you're here.

What are your fears today?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 26, 2022:
My deepest fears have been poverty. I had some not so well paying jobs for a few years, and tenuous employment. One of the jobs I had did not pay great (but health insurance) and the manager and team lead were weirdly close and the team lead did not like me. I did end up fired. And it was during the pandemic. The tides have turned, I have a great job now, pays better than I have had in the past 10 years. And I'm doing well, my team lead praises me frequently. I have "adjusted" to the idea there will likely never be a "significant other" in my life. I'm a liberal atheist in a conservative xian state, there is a hard limit to what I will tolerate. I am not going to die alone, I have great kids and grands, and no fortune to squabble over. They are there for me because that is how I raised them. There are worse things than living alone, I could still be living with my ex, although the way things are going I am sure one of us would have ended up dead sooner than "normal". I had fantasies about him tripping on the stairs and breaking his neck... That was when I knew it was time for a divorce. I have my hobbies, I see my kids often enough, I have my social networks, and I do what I wanna do when I wanna do it. It could be lots worse. If I decided something needs to change I will change it, but for now, I'm content. And compared to some, I'm living the high life.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
