Thalassophilia: someone who loves the ocean, the sea and other big bodies of water.
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 24, 2021:
Your post led me to google and I found this interesting little gem: IN THE NAME OF EUGENICS Genetics and the Uses of Human Heredity. By Daniel J. Kevles. 426 pp. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. $22.95. EARLY in this century, Charles Davenport, an important American geneticist, compiled family histories and genealogies concerned with ''thalassophilia'' - a scientific-sounding word that translates to ''love of the sea.'' The trait, Davenport concluded, was passed on from parent to child through the principles of heredity discovered by Gregor Mendel. He argued that thalassophilia, like colorblindness, was a sex-linked recessive trait because for the most part it was expressed in male offspring only. We must assume Davenport's logic would have led him to conclude that the Swiss - a landlocked people - were strikingly deficient in thalassophilia genes. We don't have to make assumptions about Davenport's thinking on the genetic traits of such peoples as Italians and Jews. ''In the Name of Eugenics,'' Daniel J. Kevles's revealing study of the tangled history of the eugenics movement and its relation to the science of human genetics, reminds us that Davenport was active in the campaign to restrict European immigration to America. He argued that the Italian ''race'' tended toward ''crimes of personal violence,'' while the genes of Jews impelled them toward ''thieving.'' These allegedly scientific conclusions - based on shabby data and even shabbier logic - enabled Davenport to argue that a continued influx of immigrants from southeastern Europe would change the genetic makeup of the United States, making the population ''darker in pigmentation, smaller in stature, more mercurial . . . more given to crimes of larceny, kidnapping, assault, murder, rape, and sex-immorality.'' https://www.nytimes.com/1985/06/09/books/the-bad-seed-of-bad-science.html

HippieChick58 comments on Dec 22, 2021:
Have you tried pot? Benadryl and doxycycline are OTC sleep aids that are pretty useful. And for me a couple of drinks puts me out pretty quickly. All of the above work for me unless they cause my blood pressure to drop, and then I have to wait for them to clear my system, which absolutely doesn't help me get sleep. The drop in BP should not be a concern for you, you're young and healthy, comparatively.

I would never consider soaking in that, that's just crazy. Obviously no one google it. From WebMD: Borax health risks: *Borax can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if you ingest it by itself, and large amounts can lead to shock and kidney failure. It's banned in U.S. food products. It also can irritate your skin and eyes, and it can hurt your nose, throat, and lungs if you breathe it in. If you're around it often, it can cause rashes and might affect male reproductive organs.* https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/borax-sodium-tetraborate

My son in law gifted me with his used and too small snow blower. It is perfect for my driveway and sidewalk. My house faces south, if I wait a few days I usually don't even have to worry about snowblowing or shoveling. Those times that I do have to do it, I have about 6 feet of sidewalk, 6 steps, and a 5X3 porch to shovel. It is satifying to get it done, it is even more so for mother nature to do it for me.

I have a memory like a trash can, weird stuff ends up in there and comes out at such odd times. Triggers are funny. However, I am fully aware there are lots of things I don't know much about. I love learning... some stuff. Learning my job has been tough because banking/finance was not something that interested me a great deal because it is so f--king complicated - to me.
