I think my mom and I would have gotten along, and had she not died my dad would have been different. However, my dad was a horse's ass, and his wife was just an awful person. I put distance between us, literally. I joined the Army and got the hell outta town, and outta the USA. It has been a process over the years to fully remember and fully identify the abuses from my dad and brothers. I read the book Rage Becomes Her before I realized how bad the abuse really was. It's a good damn thing my dad had passed on at that point and my brothers were out of touch.

It is well documented that doctors, especially male but often female as well, disregard what female patients tell them, and pass it off as "hysterical". HippieChick58 comments on Aug 2, 2020:
In German cemeteries you rarely find a grave more than 50 years old. Burial plots are not purchased, they are rented for 50 years, and the remains are then disposed of and a new owner moves in. I am not sure how the disposal happens. I have always thought that is a great idea. Yes, I can visit my mother's grave, she died in 1972. Mom isn't there, just the remains, and what is the point? My kids have been to the grave but it is not close and I doubt they'd want to make a day trip now. Yesterday I was in the city where my grandparents are buried, I thought about visiting the graves, decided not worth it. American's have a weird obsession with death.

I read these a few years ago, read the dang book. My ex would bitch and moan and make a big deal about doing household repairs. One year he had to replace a fluorescent light in the laundry room, after two or three trips to the hardware store and an ongoing monologue about the difficulties he was having. Finally it was done. Sometime later I walked in the laundry room and the light went on. I made a loud comment (and he was nearby) something to the effect of "wow we have light, good job man!!" The kids saw him, he was thrilled like a kid on Xmas day. Turns out one of his needs was words of Affirmation. I always saw it as ego stroking, my attitude was "you're a competent adult, get it done." Apparently he had doubts of his competence. What I did learn from that is to express appreciation to everyone more often.
