I have read that there is pain behind addiction. If you treat the pain you stand a better chance of curing the addiction. What I do know is other countries are much better at treating substance abuse than the US is, but what else is new. What I also know is addiction is a disease, it is not a judgement of anyone's self control or worth. It is in my mind a type of cancer that is damn hard to cure because relapses are like a metastasize of the disease. It is a disease that causes people to break laws from time to time, but it does not make them criminals

What's better: renting or owning a home?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 3, 2018:
I chose ownership, but it isn't always a picnic. I had to put in a new AC in July 2016 and probably didn't make the best decision. And now my roof is leaking. My Son In Law is in construction and when the new roof was put on his dad was my contractor. Dad later decamped and left SIL with a mess. But SIL took a look at the roof today and can't figure out why it is leaking. On the other hand the mortgage is less than renting similar space or an apartment. I have an attached garage. I have a garden. I don't have people coming in while I am gone and leaving my door unlocked. I don't have sumo wrestling or smokers upstairs. My SIL is good about doing repairs for me. I've painted it the way I want it done. If I put holes in the walls it is my business. In the long run, ownership is better for me. I have space to do what I want to do. I'm thinking as I get closer to retirement I might downsize, not sure, but I have a few years.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 3, 2018:
Some women get uptight about their age. Not me, I freakin feel every year and I own it proudly. Of course my view is skewed a tad, my mom died at 45, and I am thrilled to have lived past that. Now the rule of not asking a woman if she is pregnant unless you are seeing the baby exit her body is a good rule. Trust me on that one. Stupid gender rules that annoy me. 1. Boys will be boys. No, any child will act like a little shit if they have not been raised right. 2. Men/boys should not show emotion. That is so hugely unhealthy for so many young men. 3. Men should man up or grow a pair. That goes with above. And really you want tough. Balls are delicate and tender. A vagina can take a pounding AND push a baby out. How totally tough and awesome is that! 4. Here is a tough one, insults to women are that they are bitches, witches, frigid, ugly, etc. Insults to men is that they are a son of a bitch which insults his mother, or that he is a bastard which again insults his mother. 5. That my clothing could 'distract' a male or makes a man want to rape/hurt me. Seriously, No. Again, we need to teach men/boys better. 6. I was told to dumb down to attract a boyfriend. I could go on but I do have a life, or want to pretend so anyway.

From Wikipedia: Greek philosophers, such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, understood that the soul must have a logical faculty, the exercise of which was the most divine of human actions. At his defense trial, Socrates even summarized his teaching as nothing other than an exhortation for his fellow Athenians to excel in matters of the psyche since all bodily goods are dependent on such excellence. I work in disability claims, I've had a few claimants in the gender transformation process. I try to be sensitive to their wishes, but when I have a traditionally female name on my form I'm going to use an appropriate pronoun. And I do appologize when I mess up, and so far everyone has been cool with it. My real frustration is with doctors who try to hedge around what procedures were done. If you performed a mastectomy say that. Chest alignment surgery doesn't tell me squat. You created a vagina, that one is harder, but tell me that and I will figure out how to code it. When I grew up you were either male or female. I know there are variations, but this is one area I really need patience and maybe some hand holding. I don't think I'm making judgements, but I don't want to navigate a mine field either. And frankly there are details I'd really rather not know, just tell me what I need to know that is PG13.
Question for the Cat Slaves here. Are your cats declawed? If not, do you trim their claws?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 3, 2018:
My ginger tabby is the first cat I've had that is not declawed. The new baby is also not declawed. They do not go outside, though the baby wants to. This morning I wrestled both of them down to trim their claws. I try to do it every other week, and in the evening. I've been negligent, and they've been rather destructive. This morning seemed like the best time to do it, but they were squirmier and full of energy. In the evenings they seem to be more relaxed and calmer (more tired) The robovac was also running this morning which I'm sure also added to their stress. Lessons learned for next time. They're over it now, had their breakfasts and taking their morning naps.

One is a disabled vet, one is junkyard dog mean, and then there's me. 3. I make my own toothpaste (yes, mine has charcoal in it) and make my own deodorant, soap, lip balm, and other personal care items. 4. I cannot give blood in the US and haven't been able to for over 25 years. I lived in Germany in the 80s, and ate German cooked foods. I could be a carrier of Cruezfeldt Jakob disease, an acute spongiform encephalopahty. IOW mad cow. The baby I gave birth to in Germany CAN give blood in the US. Not fair. And if it is going to affect me it is going to start any time now. 5. My dad's baby brother married my mom's baby sister. So I had a double aunt and uncle and 2 double cousins.

It's short, fine, and curly like a poodle and sleeping on it makes it weird. I wet it and let it re curl or dry it straighter (it never gets totally straight without products and lots of work, no time for that). I do like occasional baths, usually with Epsom salts, essential oils and some moisturizing oils. They are very relaxing. I regret that I can't submerge both boobs and knees at the same time. But I have trouble staying in the tub for more than 10 minutes, I need something to do while I "relax".

HippieChick58 comments on Feb 27, 2018:

Not only did I read them, but some more than once, and I owned all of them at one time. My kids all read them. I wish I had that money and time back now.
As some of you may recall from a post I wrote a few weeks back, I have been dealing with the grief ...

Be strong, and be happy you had her for so long, and remember the good times. You were so fortunate to have someone who loved you, and to have been able to tell her how much you loved her before she passed. If you stop by my house I'll give you a place to be safe to get it all out.

I am a seamstress and quilter. The first quilt is on my lap now, my family room (basment) is a tad chilly. The second has some of the same fabrics as the first and is at work. The quilt on the bed was made about a year ago. I have tons of other stuff I've made. I crochet, knit, make lotions, lip balms, and soaps, to name a few.

Of course the xian community does not have the edge on praise. Everyone wants to be appreciated. I think in building a strong community it is nearly imperative to have a supportive encouraging community. There is enough BS outside, we need a community that builds us up. How to say it? Thank you for posting. I like that, interesting. What ever positive comment that fits.
Can I ever be happy again ?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 27, 2018:
Choose happy. What makes you happy, do that. Choose to look on the bright side. Nurture yourself. Count your advantages. If you make up your mind that you will be happy, then you will be happy. If you choose otherwise it will happen. You have to make the decision and then do it.
Peace of mind

I have had troubles with depression off and on since my early 20s. Hang in there. You're in good company and I've learned it doesn't last forever.
Does wisdom come with age?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I think that at 60 I've made most of the mistakes (outside of work) that I'm going to make. And I've been around the block a few times, so I've gained some experience. How does one gain experience? By making mistakes. Lots of them.
I was informed today that I got the promotion that I have been trying to get for SIX MONTHS!!! I ...

"I don't believe in any superstitious nonsense, but..."
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I have a silent chant when I make phone calls: "please go to voice mail, please go to voice mail..." No, not a superstition nor a prayer. Maybe a mantra. But no, I can't think of any superstitions I hold. I pretty much have disproved the breaking a mirror superstition. Black cats are just cats, albeit really dark. Haven't seen a 4 leaf clover in ages, and rabbits feet aren't good for the rabbit why would anyone carry one.
Ás beautiful as WV is, how great to be a bit closer to nature, and as much as I love animals, deer...
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 27, 2018:
My former husband was hit by a deer in semi rural Kansas so it is not limited to WV. There was a horrible accident in the early 2000s, family driving down a 6 lane highway, deer got hit by one car, went air born and went through the windshield of another car. Mom and dad died instantly, three traumatized kids in the back seat. Deer and highways are not a good mix anywhere. Just 3/4 mile from my house I saw a young deer on the side of the road.

I am trying to be green, but you're right our grandparents generation was much greener. They had no choice but to be green for the most part.
Greatest failure?

I don't know about the greatest failure, but I have had a few. I have learned failure is NOT final.
How often do you swear?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 26, 2018:
I am on the phone at work for a great deal of the day, and I am also a grandmother. So I swear like a soldier when I'm in traffic, and the rest of the time I keep it pretty locked down.
