My office is still open, they're looking at having us work from home, but I don't have a landline and my job is to take calls. They did talk about how we might divide the work up so some can be done at home that excludes taking calls, and rotating on days in the office. We will see. I did my shopping last week. I could use a few things, but they will wait. At work I had two callers who wanted to bring some paperwork TO the office. I told them given the current climate that we were closed to visitors. We don't even encourage visitors in normal times. I swear people turn off critical thinking skills. If you can email or fax it to me great, but I don't want to see you.

The good part of more people working from home and schools being shut is my commute is actually enjoyable. On the flip side, our office has started to check into what is needed for us to work at home. IMHO, this should have been explored long before now. I don't have a landline and not the fastest computer. I don't "want" to work at home, but I do want to stay employed and healthy. I work in medical billing so there is the HIPAA issue that has to be dealt with. And then the telephone issue, our lines are recorded and I am not willing to have the calls come in on my cell phone. Details, details.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 15, 2020:
I work with a translator service quite frequently. I have had a couple of calls where they interpreter has had difficulty because the caller (usually a parent of a patient in the hospital I work for) does not speak the "standard" dialect. In another job I had a doctor's secretary translating for the parent, she told me the family came from deep in South America deep in the forests, and she described the language as a patois. And down in Louisiana some of the population speaks a patois of French that is very limited to them. I am thinking that particular patois is going to die out one of these days.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 14, 2020:
My office is considering having everyone work from home for the duration, however, I don't see it happening. We are bound by HIPAA regulations so more precautions have to be taken. I take credit card payments at work, do we see a possibility for abuse? I work with protected health information. Plus I don't have a land line, and I have one dinky laptop. It is sufficient for what I do at home, but not for work I do at the office. Plus we are a very corroborative environment, I'm frequently asking for advice of the best way to do something or who I send something to to be reviewed. We have OMG lots of moving parts. I think the logistics of employees working at home should have been discussed LONG ago, by the time they get the infrastructure set up the crisis will have passed. Two of my kids and their partners have worked from home so they are set up and two of them now have no choice but to work from home. The other child and her spouse are carpenters... no option for working at home, at least paid work at home. That type of work doesn't have the proximity issue that office workers have.

Why grandma's soap kills viruses. [theguardian.com]
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 13, 2020:
I have made soap before, it is a fascinating process. You melt a variety of fats together, each fat has certain properties when mixed with lye, such a creaminess, soapiness, harness, check it out here: http://www.soapcalc.net/calc/soapcalcwp.asp then you mix liquid (usually water) and lye and let it cool. When the lye and the fats are the same temperature you mix them together and stir, stir, stir, and stir more. I use a stick blender. The lye mixed with fats causes a process called saponification. When it starts to look/feel like pudding you can put it in mold, cover it with waxed paper and then put it in a lined box and let it age for several days. Then you can unmold it, cut into bars if you need to, and then let it age another few weeks. I have used almost exclusively my own homemade soap for about 5 years, mostly because I have enough to last another 5 to 20 years.

About 8 years ago I made personal wipes. Essentially squares of flannel and diaper fabric about 7 inches square, hemmed on each side.I don't know how many I have, likely 50 or so. Use once and wash. I keep a basket under the sink to hold used wipes until I have enough for a load. I haven't purchased toilet paper in 8 years. I keep a paper roll in the guest bathroom, and with the number of guests I have, it may be another 3 years before I have to purchase more. I also use cloth instead of paper towels, and facial wipes. Seriously, one or two additional loads of laundry a month. I'm saving money and the planet. And more importantly I don't have to go to the damn store!

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
