When I went to a local Unitarian church, the pastor said it is a home for anyone who has been damaged by religion. I felt right at home. And because it is on the very far other side of town and I'm not crazy about driving that far on Sunday morning, or even getting out of bed on Sunday morning I don't go. I manage to get to my Sunday lunch Humanist book club in the middle of town.

Everyone’s Missing the Obvious About the Declining U.S. Birth Rate
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 13, 2019:
For the past several days, my Facebook feed, Twitter timeline, and evening news have been filled with stories on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest report about the declining birth rate of U.S. women. Despite the breadth of the data included in its January 2019 vital statistics update, the CDC statistic generating the biggest headlines is the one that calculates the birth rate in the U.S. to be 16 percent below the amount needed to replace our population over time. Most of the stories dominating the news cycle have sensational, clickbait headlines: “Women in the U.S. Are Having Fewer Babies” (Time); “U.S. Fertility Rates Have Plummeted Into Uncharted Territory, and Nobody Knows Why” (Science Alert); “The U.S. Is in the Danger Zone for a ‘Demographic Time Bomb’” (Insider); and “Florida, U.S. Have a Baby Problem” (Orlando Sentinel). Among my personal favorites are the headlines where women are blamed as if it’s all immaculate conception — “Women Aren’t Having Enough Babies to Replace Ourselves” (Moms). But all of the news noise is missing the glaringly obvious facts that every millennial I know recognizes immediately. Here are seven real reasons behind the declining birth rate: 1. The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate of all developed countries. When NPR and ProPublica investigated maternal mortality in the U.S., their findings were clear: “More American women are dying of pregnancy-related complications than any other developed country. Only in the U.S. has the rate of women who die been rising.” Here, around 26 out of every 100,000 pregnant women die each year, and while some European and Eurasian countries have rates in the teens, the U.S. maternal mortality rate is rising while most other countries are seeing their rates decline. The U.K., for example, has a rate of around nine in every 100,000 women dying, but the Lancet noted that country’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality has meant “being pregnant in the U.K. has never been safer.” Not to mention that our rate remains three times greater and is increasing. The lowest rates around the globe are three deaths per 100,000. Which means that compared with women in places like Finland, Iceland, and Greece, mothers in the U.S. are dying at a rate that’s nine times greater. That’s not even taking race into account. The CDC reports that black women in the U.S. are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes as their white counterparts. But it’s not just a higher risk of death here in the U.S. that makes birth difficult, it’s also a matter of cost. 2. Giving birth in the U.S. is exceedingly expensive. The United States is the most expensive place in the world to give birth. In the ...

Trust me, I work in customer service for billing for a hospital, we get calls like this all day, I've had more than one person cry. For my hospital all your accounts would be too old to be considered for Financial Assistance. We would work with you to put it on a payment plan. Don't worry about "not saying the right things." We're humans, we're moms/daughters/grandmothers, we have bills too. We KNOW your struggles we can figure out the words with you. Every hospital does things differently, every hospital has different programs, and different states have loads of different regulations. Call your hospitals, they know all the ins and outs. I'd like to tell you that all Customer Service folks are good people and like to help, but I'd say based on my hospital that would be 83% of them, but it is still a majority.

So it was delivered to my desk :) I didn't get no hug though... One of my kids texted me that I was her favorite vet. I'm willing to bet she told her dad the same thing, but maybe not...

I agree, I'd much rather have real bennies. But I also want to acknowledge to military families that I **know** your sacrifice and I appreciate it. Seriously, it makes my lead craycray when I talk to people with Tricare and I tell them I appreciate their service, especially the female soldiers and Air Force personnel. We gets lots of families from Offutt AFB using the hospital I work at. I wore that uniform for more than 6 years and then I was a "camp follower" for 12 more years. I know what it is to live far from family, I know what it is to move every few years. I know what it is to have the military member deployed for long periods of time. I know how to single parent because of the military. To me when I say Thank you for your service, I am saying I understand the struggle, I've been there, and I will vote to do better for you. Yeah, if it is a politician I'm going to check his/her voting record and likely tune them out. And Cadet Bonespurs just needs to STFU.

I just let it roll. I am a boomer, I remember Kent State and the moon landing. I am a Hippie, ie my user name. I think this is blow back and we're going to get a bit of spray. How often have the millennials been put down for just for being? I got compared to a millennial. My Gen X supervisor told me I was acting like a whiny millennial by asking for feedback on what I did right.... That and a few other things were an awakening. I think the anger is directed at the Gen X. I have three children that are millennials. They are angry. They are a product of their upbringing and now they are getting shat on by Gen X and Boomers. They may never be able to retire. They will likely not have SS or Medicare. I'd like to slap all the conservative rethuglican members of my generation and ask them what the hell they are thinking. They have become corporate mindless bots. They have missed our calling. My parent's generation, the Greatest Generation is rolling in their graves over what the f--king president is doing. There is just tons of anger out there, and I don't blame the millennials for being scared and angry. They're overloaded. Don't respond in anger. Let them know we're working for the same cause.

It fills some of the functions of church for us. But church per se, and meeting sunday mornings early, oh hell no. We aren't going to play that game.

For me, intimacy has always been connected with commitment.
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 9, 2019:
Intimacy to me means that I can trust someone with all my darkest deepest secrets and fears. There has to be a foundation of trust, affection, mutual respect, and dedication. I'd like my next relationship to last forever. In most patriarchal societies marriage lasts because the penalties to the women for leaving the relationship are harsh. Most women will not leave their children behind. People change all the time. My ex became far more conservative, started listening to Fox news non stop. I became more liberal, and when it became apparent that I was not first in his life, or even among the top 5 I left. He did not see anything wrong, nor did his church. When I left him I pretty much left the church. I will never remarry, but I'd like a long term commitment someday. But at my age in my location I don't think that is realistic.
How do you deal with Christmas?
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 9, 2019:
I mostly ignore it. I don't decorate. I switch to a radio station that does not play much xmas music. My "usual" station starts playing it 24/7 next week. My concession to the season and the grand children is to make a xmas tree quilt that I do need to finish very soon. That is seasonal as well as useful. My family does a gift exchange, and we will get together on xmas day for the holiday celebration as well as granddaughter's birthday.

At the end of the day all that matters is that we did what was best for ourselves, naysayers be damned. Now I will tell you that we all grow all the time, and we often grow in different directions than our friends do. It is unusual to have a 42 year friendship, but just because it is old doesn't mean it is holy or sacred. If it has outlived its function it is wise to end it. To thine ownself be true. And if you don't advocate for you, who will? I think you did good, and I think you have grown more. You may still mourn the loss of the friendship, just as we all mourn the loss of our youth. But with the relief you feel the mourning will not be long, and you're better off for ending it. You go girl, you're working on you!

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
