It's been just over 2 weeks since my son passed.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 28, 2018:
Life has whatever meaning you ascribe to it, Steve. Losing your child violates the "natural order" of things, which is especially devastating to the parent. I don't know the circumstances of your son's death (and I use that word because "passing" implies moving on to some other place, a particular place none of us believes exists), but I'm a parent too and can only imagine what you must be going through. I think I speak for many here when I say feel free to lean on us. Feel free to post all you want about this if it helps you to talk about it. The only advice I can give you is to cherish every memory you have of your son and live YOUR one and only life. I sincerely hope this helps.

You should always tag @Admin with these kinds of posts. I've noticed things too, like an emoji replacing the last character in a sentence because you wrapped it in a ")" and it followed a certain letter. This appears in my profile (look for the sunglasses smiley).

Why are atheists not willing to form a coalition?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 26, 2018:
Atheists better get organized. Although we are a minority when compared to all religions combined, we are a very large, and growing "category" since us freethinkers don't wanna be in a group. LOL! X-tians have a political stranglehold on US politics now despite their shrinking numbers. Freethinkers, while maybe not necessarily organizing to take control of the US government, could, and I think, should, do what we can to spread ideas of reason and individual rights. The religious are already becoming enlightened. It's just not happening quickly enough, IMO. This site is one of those things that will help.

Captions!!
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 26, 2018:
Wow, I have never heard of that condition before. I'm sorry you have that because the soundtrack adds so much to the film experience. Even at home, a nice surround sound system with a good sub-woofer brings a lot more realism to the experience. The only time I ever use closed captioning was back when I had a gym membership and would ride a stationary bike for about 30 minutes they had TV monitors suspended from the ceiling. If you didn't have earbuds plugged into your bike, you couldn't get the audio but the captioning was always on. I watched multiple seasons of Angel (that Buffy spin-off series) that way. LOL!

I have always deemed people who go to church on sunday in fresh costumes have been up all night long...
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 25, 2018:
I'm sure there are plenty of hypocrites (Catholics, mostly) who do exactly as you say; sin like crazy during the week and confess in order to receive forgiveness on Sunday. But there are a lot of "true believers" who faithfully attend church (often far beyond only on Sundays), and honestly try to live their lives "for Christ" or whoever. So not everyone is purely motivated to attend church out of guilt, but guilt and fear are surely prime tools of religion to keep their masses in-line, and subjugated.

Losing friends
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 25, 2018:
I feel for you. This ain't easy no matter how you slice it. I live in a pretty progressive State (CA). The vast majority of the people I know personally here are X-tians. Some of them trumpet their belief on FB. I just ignore all of that. Most of them know I'm a non-believer and, I believe, as a consequence, none of them are close friends. They don't hate on me, or my non-belief. They just ignore any controversial posts I make regarding separation of state and church and generally keep me at arm's length. If the people you are talking about are more acquaintances than friends, who cares what they think? But if you have people you consider close friends and feel the friendship can continue despite your differing belief (or non-belief), it might be worth working on. It's your call. I hope this is helpful.

Your thoughts on going to religious ceremonies?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 25, 2018:
This is difficult, as you say, especially if it's family. My brother, who I'm really unclear on regarding his actual belief. I THINK he is a believer, but definitely not religious. His wife, however, is Catholic, and has raised their children as Catholics. They are rather hypocritical because none of them attends church, but they have the other bases covered, if you will. I think it was their children's confirmation we were invited to. We went in support of the family, but now I'm almost militant about my atheism and wouldn't agree to going to a similar event. Weddings are another matter. I think a lot of people just defer weddings as the purvey of churches. Neither of my two weddings were held in churches, nor were they religious. We wrote our own vows and used nondenominational ministers. To your point, in the case of child or adult baptism, I think you could politely decline by saying you appreciate that they have thought to invite you, but as a non-believer, you feel your attendance at such an event would constitute an endorsement or other religious-based support so you'll be unable to attend.
I am on a dating site and I contacted a gentleman and we spoke on the phone last night.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 25, 2018:
Oh man! Masters in Divinity. LOL! You hit the motherload of religion. Well, there's no harm in going for coffee. Maybe you'll make a new friend, but I would have serious reservations about engaging in a deeper relationship having what I consider to be a fundamental difference of opinion.
What is your response when you ask a christian to physically show you god as to believe in him and ...

Hello all, I'm quite new here, but am going through some really awful experiences with my family ...
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 25, 2018:
There is no easy solution to your situation (and I'm sorry to hear of your psychologically abusive marriage too =[). You are never going to be able to satisfy your family members with anything you say. I think the best you can hope for is to mitigate the negativity by simply telling them all that you love them, you are not going to suddenly become a believer again, and in order to foster as normal a relationship as possible, you and they need to agree to disagree on the topic of religion. You don't need to be saved, you don't want to be saved. Make the topic taboo after explaining these points. I'm very sorry you're having to deal with this situation, especially at a time you're trying to be there for your parents and family. I hope this is helpful.
Is anyone else sick and tired of all the Superhero movies?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 25, 2018:
Nope, I love them. I think the genre is coming into its own because of CGI, and Disney/Marvel do a marvelous (sorry) job of bringing these stories to the big screen. DC is trying, miserably, to emulate their success. SH films are fantastical and CGI makes that aspect of it believable. I loved the comix as a teen ager and love the film presentations being done now.

Are there others in the community who are dancers, or enjoy dancing?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 24, 2018:
I like the night life (well, I used to), I like to Boogie (and that's about the extent of it). LOL! But my daughter is a bit like you. She has been doing some form of dance since age 4 or 5. She has turned into quite a tap-dancer and is taking some advanced tap, and also jazz. She even took some hip-hop at one point. Recently, she was in a community theater production of Addams Family that had a big tango number in it (no surprise there!). Next Spring, she'll perform in a production of Newsies with the same company. You probably know this is a very dance-intensive show. The B-way version has some nice tap in it as well. You guys should become buds. =] Oh, she's 16 now.
Why do people who believe in an afterlife cling on to this life no matter how bad it gets?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 24, 2018:
The religious issue around suicide is simply that, at least in the Christian religion, it's considered a sin. So clearly, assisted suicide (or euthanasia) is out of the question. This has nothing at all to do with belief in an afterlife. I feel that belief in the hereafter by good little X-tians and the promise of a seat at you-know-who's right-hand, if anything, makes them value life on earth less.

LOL! I think I'd be comfy on $150K/Yr. Would I grow into that income? Mebbe. =]
Musicals!!!
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 24, 2018:
I may be sounding a bit like a broken record by now because I've commented on musicals a few times. My 16YO daughter is big-time into musical theater. She has been doing some form of performing arts since she was around 5. She has been in a local youth community theater company for about the last 5.5 years. This company puts on 2 shows a year and she hasn't missed one since she started. Most recently, she performed in Addams Family (this company only does Broadway shows). A few she has been in include; Alice In Wonderland (her first with them, she landed a speaking role as the March Hare and, in my completely unbiased opinion, stole the show in the Tea Party scene with the Hatter and the Door Mouse), Cats, White Christmas, Music Man, Anything Goes, Little Mermaid (she landed another speaking role here as Sebastian, complete with Jamaican accent. She killed. LOL!), and Shrek was a big one. She's done about a dozen shows. As a volunteer parent, I have had an education in the back end of theater, "volunteering" as a set builder and, mostly, on the lighting team. All of this has given me a real appreciation of musical theater. I can't even watch my kid on-stage without welling up. She is with an exceptional company that produces truly magnificent shows. I say this very sincerely. I have grown to love the kids, many of whom stay, as my daughter has, for many years until they "graduate" from the program. If anyone in the greater Sacramento metro area is interested in checking out a show, it's River City Theatre Company. They operate from Hiram Johnson HS. I can guarantee you will be entertained. Of these shows I've listed, probably Shrek is my favorite from a quality production perspective, but I'll never forget certain moments watching my daughter, such as her tap-dancing in a huge tap number in Act 2 of White Christmas, or every moment on-stage as Sebastian. In Spring, 2019, they are doing Newsies and she hopes to land a lead in that show. Ok, I'm shutting up now. Thanks for reading.

Libertarians agree government needs to be smaller. The question is, how small?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 23, 2018:
The Libertarian platform is fairly clear on just how small: https://www.lp.org/platform/ It does speak to environmental protection, but not very explicitly. Here's what it says about that: 2.2 Environment Competitive free markets and property rights stimulate the technological innovations and behavioral changes required to protect our environment and ecosystems. Private landowners and conservation groups have a vested interest in maintaining natural resources. Governments are unaccountable for damage done to our environment and have a terrible track record when it comes to environmental protection. Protecting the environment requires a clear definition and enforcement of individual rights and responsibilities regarding resources like land, water, air, and wildlife. Where damages can be proven and quantified in a court of law, restitution to the injured parties must be required.
On being out of touch.

Do you responsibly avoid sharing misinformation?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 23, 2018:
I don't see how sharing misinformation would damage someone's health. If you mean that by sharing some misinformation that is used by someone who damages their health as a result, ok. But the act of sharing information in and of itself does no real harm. It may make the sharer look like an idiot, but no one is being forced to do anything. Misinformation creates a great amount of "noise" that, for many, I think, distracts them from the important stuff. I don't share this type of stuff at all.
Parents: Do you use punishment?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 23, 2018:
You should define the meaning of "punishment." I think you mean corporal punishment (spanking/hitting). If that is what you mean, I did not practice this. I have two children, one is grown, the other is 16. With my eldest, when he was young, on one occasion, I spanked him, but only because I had threatened to do so after repeat violations for the same thing and in order to maintain credibility, I had to follow through. In retrospect, I think that hurt me worse than it hurt him. There really is no need to spank your kids. When they are younger, using time-out is very effective when done properly. This is a method of control (because that's what we are really talking about anyway) that doesn't involve excessive force. If you have an especially unruly kid you may have to hold them in the chair, physically, until they accept that you are in-control. When they get older, suspension of privileges is effective, but again, you must follow through.
Not so sure about the new Harry Potter book...

I went to see "The Color Purple" musical this evening, and it was good.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 23, 2018:
My teenaged daughter is heavily into musical theater. Recently, her company performed Addams Family, which was very good. The theater company she belongs to is pretty big and occasionally split the kids up and do two different shows. They did that this time and the younger ones did Lion King. These are all Broadway versions, and always good. So I spent Saturday evening watching that, striking the set, and then last night was the cast party. It's always a roller skating event and I really enjoy that too. =]

I think it's appalling that religion is taught at schools, brainwashing young children.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 22, 2018:
Agree with @geko. As long as religion is taught informationally and not as literal truth, it is useful information. When public (or any) school teaches religion as truth/fact (in the US this would be a direct violation of church/state separation as it would effectively establish the Christian religion as "official" in this country), that is when the brainwashing occurs.

The best way to deal with members who behave inappropriately here is to report them to Admin, who can see everything. They can, and should investigate every allegation leveled against a site member and they own the responsibility of deciding how things should be handled. We should not take it upon ourselves to post any personally identifiable info (such as an email address) or anything else in any attempt to "expose" these members. Losing a close friend is never easy. Soundsl like the person you described dumped your group after it served its purpose. That's sad. These days, you never have to "lose" your friends simply because they move away. Surely, the dynamic of your relationship will change if you can't spend time F2F, but with all of the electronic means of connecting, you can sustain your relationship. I'm still friends with a neighbor I had right after moving to CA (in 1976). We both enlisted in the AF, but about 6 months apart. We have only seen each other a handful of times since then, but we remain connected via phone, email, and FB. Here's an article I haven't read all the way thru, but that supposedly debunks many of the myths surrounding this topic: https://medium.com/the-mission/the-14-most-destructive-millennial-myths-debunked-by-data-aa00838eecd6
So do you believe we've been visited by extraterrestrials?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 19, 2018:
I'm going with "they're too dumb to bother about." I absolutely believe we can't be the only intelligent life in the universe, but are still primitive enough to be beneath the notice of alien civilizations because we bring nothing to the table. Hell, we can't even get along with each other yet. =\
Here's an (updated) collage of some famous atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, humanists, and ...

Are introductions a thing?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 19, 2018:
This place advertises itself as a dating site. People come here for that reason and then discover what a great community this is and get absorbed in that. I think that's a good thing. Anyway, it's OKAY to view profiles. If you think you might be interested in someone based on their profile, you can follow them. Then you'll get alerts when they make posts which will help you get to know them a bit. They will know you've viewed their profile and will know you follow them, so if you're a bit shy, this is a subtle way of indicating possible interest. Just jump in with both feet, participate, and if someone seems interesting, reach out directly. Have fun!
Sexy pics or not?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 19, 2018:
Only if you think posting sexy pics of yourself will attract the kind of people you don't want to date. Seriously. =] It's up to you.

Is there a way to like profile pictures?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 18, 2018:
That's a no. Not possible to like images.
Name THREE things about yourself and one not true. Let me guess which one's not true.
