How often do you update your profile picture? I update mine every month.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 18, 2018:
I admit I'm not good on the maintenance. I think I still have my original up there. I added a few additional images tho, and my daughter made me add one that included her and my son. LOL!
Just wanted to know if anybody has had any luck with the dating on this site?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 18, 2018:
I think the site is "working" as designed. As a result of the ongoing community conversation I have made some connections. One of them blew up in my face, another is going well and I think there is real potential. Neither of these people are local to me, which is a challenge.
Why would you not respond to a private message?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 18, 2018:
I think non-response to PMs here stems from an increased sense of "ettiquette" on other sites where sending a PM can be considered very "forward." I think that's ridiculous and to ignore a PM is quite rude, unless the message was somehow inappropriate or rude to begin with.

So in order to get a job, I colored my hair tonight. I think I look younger?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 18, 2018:
Sadly, I believe age discrimination is alive and well. They just don't tell you about it. I work in state government and am trying to promote into management. The way the process works I never know who, or see, my competitors. Nothing is said in the interview (if I even get one), so there is no way for me to know who was selected, only that I wasn't (and I may, or may not be notified of this). Oftentimes, the "fix" is in and the hiring manager fully intends to hire someone who already works for him or her, but they have to follow the legal (union mandated) process to advertise, screen apps, interview. Within my own dept, I feel there are various kinds of discrimination going on but can't prove anything. In HR, for example; managers are all female with one exception. In another office, a slew of young women were hired as managers (we're talking 20-somethings here) and I wasn't even interviewed.
Who makes the best French fries?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 17, 2018:
None of the above. There's a Mexican place in my area called El Jardin who make some really yummy fries. The Flaming Grill, a gourmet burger franchise has similar fries. I will admit that McD's when they're fresh and hot are pretty good.
Is there a word or phrase that makes you say "ew"?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 17, 2018:

Being offended: What does it REALLY mean?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 17, 2018:
Perhaps those who are so easily offended should introspect a bit and ask themselves why something is offensive to them. Stepping back and taking an objective look at it might be enlightening.
FYI: I just watched a documentary on CBC News Marketplace regarding oil changes on your car.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 17, 2018:
I usually go about double the 3500 interval that is typically recommended. Synthetic oils go even longer. Wouldn't surprise me if that 30K interval mentioned in the comments is accurate. Changing oil every 10K is probably fine. Here's what Edmunds has to say about it: https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/tips-advice/stop-changing-your-oil.html
Dating while separated
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 17, 2018:
When you say separated, do you mean legally separated, or merely physically separated? Ultimately, if the relationship is over (by mutual agreement) and you just haven't split up legally, no, it's not wrong in my opinion.

IAMGROOT comments on Apr 16, 2018:
Um, this is just my opinion, but... 1. YOU ARE A VICTIM! You need help, not punishment. You did not voluntarily experiment with drugs, someone slipped you a "mickey," as they say. A loving and caring father would have maybe growled at you for a lack of vigilance, but then would have had you seen immediately. You blacked out? So without going into the TMI zone, people do this for a reason so you should be thoroughly examined. 2. You are legally an adult and if you're on the family medical insurance, you don't need dad's permission. In fact, privacy laws protect you FROM dad (and mom). So either set an appointment or just go to the emergency room so you can be seen. Your health and safety are paramount here, not what your dad thinks you did wrong. I hope this is helpful.

So. How many of you are fans of The Walking Dead?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 16, 2018:
I've been a fan since the beginning. I've missed the last couple of seasons of FTWD and am not caught up on TWD because I'm not paying for TV anymore (just HBO, LOL!), so I'll have to catch up later. I agree with @Carla78 who points out that the show deviates some from the comix (I've never read the books, just know the show is based off them). I think Carol also and Darrell also were killed off in the books. I think it's a great show and whether you are into zombies or not, the way they mix the real monster-terror of the zombies into the real human drama of the characters is a true success cocktail. As an aside, I'll say the show is far better than the attraction at Universal Studios, Hollywood, which is very cheesy. LOL!

The apparent suicide of the LGBTQ attorney is horrible. This short notification provides no context so I have to assume ths person was in a very, very bad place to feel that ending his life was his only option. So very sad. I saw many of the twitter acknowledgements. On the Starbucks incident, well, that is just plain wrong. As many of the twitter commenters stated, when you go into SB all you see is folks chilling out. The company apology is nice, but I have to agree that a failure to acknowledge any ownership/wrongdoing or to give any indication that their employees would be disciplined in any way is disappointing to say the least. It's so hard to believe that this kind of shit can still happen in one of the (for now anyway) freest nations on Earth.
69 Visitors and no one says 'hello'
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 15, 2018:
It's not possible (yet) to leave a note on a profile that would be publicly visible so those "hi" greetings would all come in the form of private messages. I think a lot of folks feel they are violating some ettiquette by initiating a PM without permission. So my guess is this may be part of the reason. I've had 157 visitors peek at mine and only one person has messaged me as a result. I know this because she specifically mentioned the profile. All of my other PMs were the result of post/response engagement. Hope this helps.
I'm new here, but I've posted a few times to see what it was like and I am so floored by how amazing...

How do you spend your Sunday mornings?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 15, 2018:
My Sunday is not too different from yours. Sleep in until around 9 (I've been up about an hour). Then coffee and a lighter breakfast (I'm home alone today so the big breakfast was yesterday). I plan to exercise later and have a project at home I need to get behind me. I have a teen aged daughter who is big into musical theater and am a parent "volunteer," so my weekends and some weekday evenings often involve chauffering her around to reherasals and classes supporting this activity.
I have a question about wine for anyone who has experience and/or an opinion, expert or otherwise.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 15, 2018:
Oh man, wine tasting is such a subjective thing. I live in an area (in Cali) that produces a lot of Zinfandel, some Cab, Pino Noir, Viognier, Tempranillo, and a few others. I don't have much experience with Shiraz or Syrah, but recall them to be drier than I prefer. My suggestion is to start experimenting. =] You could host a wine party and maybe create a list of locally available versions of these varietals so you don't get too many duplications. That would be a fun event.

IAMGROOT comments on Apr 15, 2018:
Actually, there are other forces at work that will largely displace automobiles. ET3 (Evacuated Tube Transport Technologies) and Musk's Hyperloop will come into existence, I believe. When they do they will largely replace the airline, trucking, shipping, and automotive industries because they will shrink the earth by many factors (ET3 can achieve speeds in excess of 4K MPH). So there's that. Presently, yes, autonomous cars will probably replace human controlled cars and it's likely that, in the supposed interest of safety, humans will be removed from the equation since human error, at the point where autonomous cars can function without accident. Humans will then be the most dangerous things on the road. I have mixed feelings about this as I live in CA and love my car. I also see the value in moving forward. I'm disgusted with the tremendous waste of tiime and money surrounding High-Speed Rail.

IAMGROOT comments on Apr 14, 2018:
This is a hard question for me because I still don't know what I wanna be when I grow up. Like many, I am doing a job I don't love, but that pays me enough to keep me. At this stage of my life, I think I would enjoy doing a simple job in support of the vacation/resort industry. That would keep me around people who are traveling and having fun. This is going to make you laugh, but I love Disneyland and WDW, and I think a fun job for me there (which does not really capture the fantasy nature of your question, but whatevs, LOL!) would be as one of those geezers in the white hats. They are part security, part Park Ambassador, part Walking Information Kiosk. They are always providing directions. I'd be good at that. LOL! As for fantasy jobs (and these also don't fit your question) I think it would be great fun to operate a pub (where everybody knows your name). Maybe I should buy a Cheers franchise? Or, I wouldn't mind owning/operating a gym/health club. After doing a lot of wine-tasting (cuz that makes me an expert, don'tchaknow) It might also be fun to be a winemaker. I realize that this is a science and would have quite a learning curve (especially for me). Well, there it is.
Should there even be the concept of a "billionaire"?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 14, 2018:
"Billionaire" simply refers to someone who has amassed $1B or more in wealth. I have to say, I am sick and tired of everyone propagating the concept that anyone with a lot of wealth is automatically an evil, greedy person. Are there people who have amassed wealth in an unethical way? Sure. Are there crony-Capitalists who are in bed with the government in order to gain unfair advantages so they don't have to compete in the real world, yes. But, I believe the vast majority of business owners, including many who have achieved billionaire status, are honest producers who have created hundreds of thousands of jobs through their businesses. Statements like the one in this post implies that these people should not own the fruits of their labor. I'm sorry, but that's just wrong. Ok, bring on the haters.

Does anyone on this site own a fully electric car (Tesla, Chevy Bolt, BMW I3, Nissan Leaf...)?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 13, 2018:
I think the biggest issue with fully electric cars is battery degradation. As the battery degrades you lose range. Also, I think electric car owners drive very conservatively to preserve battery life. I have never seen anyone on a Tesla out their foot into it.

This evening we're going to watch a musical theater production of Lion King done by a company both girls are a part of (but this show is populated by the younger children, grade 7 and under) **Tomorrow**: I'll probably make breakfast for the girls, then taking them to a place called Color Me Mine where you buy "naked" pottery and hand paint it yourself, then they fire it for you and you pick it up a few days later. Fun, and I can bring my own wine. LOL! Later, I'll drop the girls off with my ex, go back home and work out. **Sunday**: Continue some yard work I started last night, work out again, do laundry, drink. LOL!

Is "following", in the context of this site, the equivalent of "friending" on FB?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 12, 2018:
Following is a way to indicate interest in that person. That interest may simply be in their posts, or it could also indicate an interest in wanting to know them better. I do both and follow people who I think post interesting questions or other content and also people I might want to know better. My impression of how following is perceived on this site is more or less "it's all good." On other sites, much is made of observing some sort of ettiquette around this sort of thing (request permission before following). I don't think that's the case here and have never had an issue. I follow a number of people and am followed. Despite all that following, I'm not compelled to keep looking over my shoulder nervously. LOL! Follow away!
Famous person?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 12, 2018:
As many have, I have had numerous celebrity sightings. Back in their heyday, I used to see SF 49ers all over Redwood City, CA (where I lived). I saw Joe Montana at a local deli/grocer, Bubba Paris, Ronnie Lott. Also saw Jerry Rice at a local mall. So cool! I saw Elke Sommer on a dock at Zephyr Cove, CA (Lake Tahoe). At a trade show in Las Vegas, I saw Corbin Bernsen sitting in a lounge at Mandalay Bay Resort. Saw Dennis Rodman who was a celebrity model in a watch vendor's exhibit at the tradeshow itself (jewelry and watches). Saw Kobe Bryant at Disneyland. Most notably, my family had an encounter with Robert Carlyle (Rumpelstiltskin on Once Upon A Time). We were at Downtown Disney in Anaheim after spending a day in the parks, having dinner at an Italian restaurant called Naples. He was sitting in the booth next to us, just having dinner with his family. He had been made by other restaurant guests who restrained themselves for quite a while before they finally started pestering him for autographs. We waited until we were ready to go before my ex approached him. He was very gracious and nice and posed for pics with my ex and my daughter.

Just finished reading "The Virtue of Selfishness" by Ayn Rand.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 11, 2018:
I have read most of Rand's works and happen to agree with the Objectivist philosophy. I think her fiction does a great job of illustrating that philosophy. She uses pure archetypes and obviously many people have an issue with that, having been spoon-fed "flawed" heroes their whole lives. I think they are missing the point. Rand was a Russian immigrant who went on to become a screenwriter for Cecil B. Demille so I think she deserves some props. Her works have had an impact to this day.

IAMGROOT comments on Apr 10, 2018:
There was nothing wrong with what you had in your profile. Just saying you like sex is not overtly sexual, or suggestive even, especially not here where there is a strong sense of community. What this tells me is there is an element of immature men on the site who are not very perceptive, and also read things into what they see in profiles. So my advice to you is: Consider the source
This has probably been asked a lot but here goes... Do you ever feel shame for being an atheist?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 10, 2018:
Although Atheists are now the single largest group (larger than any single religious strain), we are still in the minority when believers are all lumped together, which is scary AF. It saddens me greatly that in our supposedly modern age the vast majority of humans still cling to mysticism when there are rational/scientific explanations for the previously unexplainable/unknown. You are having unearned shame foisted upon you by these people. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

Dating: what's your ideal age range? How important is age?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 10, 2018:
I agree with others who have said age is just a number, tho a bit cliche. LOL! I've been in two marriages. Both of them were to women who were my age, within a month. That was fine. Now, however (and this could be midlife crisis crying out from within me) I have a preference for younger women. Maturity has been mentioned and I feel that is valid, but maturity and age are not necessarily conjoined. I've met some "old souls" who are quite young. I was recently in a relationship with someone MUCH younger than me. I had to end that relationship for a number of reasons, but in terms of getting along with one another, cohabitating, maturity, physical compatability, things were great. If anything, maybe I'M the immature one, who knows. I just don't think age should be a huge driving factor unless YOU feel compelled in that direction. I feel if you meet someone and you click with them, you either go for it, or you don't. Love and relationships are kind of a crap shoot, even on dating sites where you think you sort of know what you're getting. It's a risk, but taking that risk could pay off big. =]
From the bottom of my heart, thank you all.

What are some of your favorite childhood memories?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 9, 2018:
I'd say traveling across country with my family when my dad retired from the Army in 1976. We borrowed my uncle's motorhome (now known as RVs don'tchaknow). It was considered the "Cadillac of motorhomes" at the time, a 35' Vogue. My uncle was in the auto parts retail business (he owned a store and at one time had owned a chain of around 10). I remember he had this cool and pioneering "tech" for the time on this rig. It was a set of hydraulic levelers. You would adjust the leveling struts (one at each wheel) until all 4 lights were out. I loved playing with that damned thing. Loved riding shotgun too! It was a 4-week cross-country vacation. We stayed at all manner of campgrounds (as long as they had full hookups). I remember my sibs and I whining that the places we stayed HAD to have pools, and we wanted to go horseback riding. One of the places we stayed was Jellystone Park (yes, the one with Yogi and Boo Boo). They are a big chain now. Anyway, this was a pretty special time in my life with my family. Despite being born overseas myself (as a military brat) and doing a fair amount of traveling as a military dependent, this was the biggest and longest "vacation" we had ever been on.

IAMGROOT comments on Apr 9, 2018:
Well, I think it'd be cool to be a blogger. No idea if I have the writing chops to do that, plus you have to build a following and then hope to draw in paid advertising, so unless you are able to blog for an established site and get paid by them, that ain't gonna be your ticket. So I did a quick Google search for "work from home jobs." and this article came up: https://www.thepennyhoarder.com/make-money/career/work-from-home-full-time/ It talks about some legit companies offering work from home jobs (real ones), and sites that promote work from home jobs. IAMGROOT comments on Apr 9, 2018:
I am no expert, but the sheer size of the universe (potentially multiple universes) strongly suggests there will be an infinite number of planets much older than Earth, with similar environmental conditions. It logically follows that life would have evolved similarly there, and potentially, intelligent and technologically-advanced life, far more advanced than Earth's, exists an infinite number of times. I think also that such intelligent life is aware of earth, but Humanity is so primitive as to not be worth interacting with, yet.

As for causes, it's easy to casually cast about statements that one would give their life for a cause, but I think things would have to get pretty bad (in the US) before I reached such a point. Here, we (still) have it good enough that the vast majority live in varying degrees of comfort. If freedoms in the US were eroded to the point of oppression it would probably motivate me to risk my life to restore freedom.
Any social/philanthropic groups that do not require a belief in a higher power?

Do you go by the amount of positive reviews when you make a purchase online?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 8, 2018:
It's a factor, but I am a realist and know sometimes reviews are paid, or bogus. I often read the reviews and don't just go by the rating score.
Hi very skeptical about this site. I hope someone can prove me wrong here.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 7, 2018:
Skeptical about what regarding this site? Prove you wrong about what? You assert nothing and throw out a vague statement. I suggest you communicate more clearly if you want to get serious and clear responses.
I know this is more than a dating site but it's still a dating site as well.

Tell me something moving or profound that you heard, saw, or read about non-belief.

Once, when my ex told someone I was an Atheist, they asked her "Well, what does he believe in, then?" She said, "He believes in himself." =]

About This Site
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 7, 2018:
It's a non-believer's social media platform masquerading as a dating site.
Just got home now recovering from surgery alone sigh.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 6, 2018:
Welcome to the site. Sorry you're having to recover home alone. No doubt there are plenty of folks here willing to keep you cyber-company. LOL!
Do you feel that Agnostic.com fuels your disbelief in the same way church fuels a believer's belief?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 6, 2018:
Nope, but it does provide a safe place to vent for those who need it. It's a place where we like-minded nonbelievers can make friends (and maybe more) without all of that religious bullshit.
We are what we eat. What's your motto?

Has anyone checked out the new social media site MeWe.com?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 6, 2018:
MeWe's big thing is privacy. I don't think it competes, or really even tries to compete with FB. But I think the site gets a lot of FB users, some of which dump FB. Especially in light of security and privacy concerns and concerns about how FB uses its user's information. I have my issues with FB. I hate how they are monetizing it with ads. I hate how videos are now interrupted by ads. That causes me to just click away.
Is atheism linked to depression/anxiety?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 6, 2018:
I have no idea. I would say, however, that Atheists living in areas populated by deeply religious people suffer from varying levels of persecution and harrassment. This situation could cause depression, but I doubt that being an Atheist in and of itself would cause depression. Quite the opposite I'd say. For many, it lifts a huge burden of unearned guilt.
How important is religion in the making of our policies?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 6, 2018:
Religion should not be a factor at all in setting policy. And yes, the first amendmen guarantees freedom of religion (and for us, freedom FROM religion) and prohibits the govenment from recognizing any "official" religion . Sadly, the dominant religion in the US is X-tianity and alarmingly, they are now boldly pursuing a theocratic agenda. This scares the shit out of me. We are already seeing evidence of this in some areas where it is getting more and more difficult for a woman to have an abortion. Companies are invoking their religious beliefs on their employees (Hobby Lobby). Then there's Mike Pence. =\
I have teenaged kids (now) but they were 6 and 11 when their father died of cancer.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 6, 2018:
I have lost both my parents. That's the closest my kids have come to having to deal with death. I have two kids, a son and a daughter, ages 25 and 16, respectively. My son knew both of my parents, but they never lived near us so I'd say he was merely acquainted. My daughter had a similar minimal connection with my dad. If there is a bright side, the fact that they weren't close caused less pain for my kids when they died. Also, the apples have not fallen far from the tree and they both get that dead is dead.

Does anyone else ever miss going to church sometimes?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 5, 2018:
It has been decades since I attended any church (1980, LOL!), so no, not missing that at all. But a secular group in my area tries to emulate that feeling of community by holding something called Sunday Assembly. They have a facility they call Reason Center. It's just some commercial office space and has a large room. Not fancy. They have a small, makeshift stage, set up chairs, bring in some secular speakers. There is music, "fellowship," and a potluck. It's nice and mostly works. It's possible something similar is going on in your area. =]
Admitting when you’re wrong..
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 5, 2018:
I agree with you that this is a human condition. I also think that not wanting to admit being wrong has had much more devastating consequences when someone knows they're wrong and lets things move forward anyway, regardless of the result. When I am wrong, I always try to own it and make corrections/make it right if it's possible to do so. I have definitely made my share of mistakes.

IAMGROOT comments on Apr 5, 2018:
When someone asks me for prayers for a medical procedure, I tell them to trust the science. BTW, everyone knows god is way too busy helping the NFL make touchdowns to cure a brain tumor, or save starving 3rd World children.
