Is it just me or does the Christian doctrine of “you are weak, broken, worthless without god” ...
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 9, 2018:
I think there is truth to it, yes. At least in the sense that it creates an unhealthy state of mind and low self worth.
Love this!

I'd have no problem at all doing that.

IAMGROOT comments on Jun 9, 2018:
Thanks for sharing this. Let's not forget that these "good X-tians" are IN office, right up to the top. Our secular gov't is under a direct attack by people who have an agenda, who are organized, and who have great power. The RL law is anything but. It mainly gives special power to practice X-tianity. It should be called The Christian Special Powers Act. =\
When you play chess, do you get emotionally attached to your pawns?
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 9, 2018:
LOL! Nope. They don't call'em pawns for nothing. You sometimes must sacrifice pawns, or other pieces to gain advantage.
The common denominator.

Is life meaningless if we can live forever?
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 9, 2018:
Human life, in and of itself has no meaning. It just exists, like everything else just exists. Life's "meaning" is individually subjective. As others have said here; people give their own meaning to life. I don't see the length of a human life as being connected to any meaning (also echoing others comments). I believe if Humans achieve biological immortality (and I think it is possible), it's my hope that along with immortality comes wisdom, greater knowledge, peace, and the eventual vanishing of religion.

IAMGROOT comments on Jun 8, 2018:
The real debate is not over climate change. That is a constant. The debate is over Human-caused/influenced climate change and opinions vary. I haven't met anyone who "doesn't believe" at all.
How well has this site worked for you?
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 8, 2018:
I've had good and bad experiences on the site. I don't blame the site itself for the bad ones. There are scammers everywhere and they are very hard to guard against. I also made one connection that I thought was mutual, but it wasn't and the only issue I have there is with the person because she overreacted by blocking me here (yeah, I'll admit that). I have connected with a few people more directly, and one I am very interested in. The site works, IMHO. California, the Nanny State will now restrict water usage, per-person!
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 8, 2018:
With regard to laying all the responsibility on the state/governor to build dams, I misspoke. It was mentioned that the Fed is involved, however, according to this FEMA chart (https://www.fema.gov/dam-ownership-united-states), the majority of dams in the US are privately owned, so I think private dam construction should also be undertaken. Also, I'm no expert on rainfall/drought, but as I said in a reply to a comment here, in my area, at least, existing water coffers were completely filled by seasonal rain. So much so, in fact, that water was released (wasted). Citizens in this state DO practice water conservation as a matter of course. Are there abusers, absolutely, but I'm sure they represent a tiny fraction of the population and certainly not enough to justify this. I sincerely believe a large part of the solution, in concert with practicing water conservation and repairing old and leaky delivery systems (as was suggested in the Bee article) is to increase our storage capacity. Squeezing citizens through legislation is not the answer.
California, the Nanny State will now restrict water usage, per-person!
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 7, 2018:
Ok, that is a rather alarmist article and apparently has some bullshit contained within it. Here's a more balanced Sacramento Bee article: http://www.sacbee.com/latest-news/article212605634.html I still disagree with the idea of mandated rationing on this scale when our governor is wasting BILLIONS AND BILLIONS on his pet project, High-Speed Rail.

IAMGROOT comments on Jun 7, 2018:
I don't believe in corporal punishment, but on one occasion, my son, who was pretty young at the time, maybe 7 or 8, had done something repeatedly he'd been told not to. I made the mistake of threatening to spank him if he did it one more time. He did. At that point, I either had to make good on my threat, or lose credibility/effectiveness as a parent. I did spank him, and it really DID hurt me more than him. Afterwards, I wept heavily. I have always used a very effective form of time-out with my kids and I think in that instance I just got frustrated. I agree with you that there are more effective and less violent ways to discipline your children and any boyfriend who hits his GF is guilty of assault. "I hit you because I love you" is bullshit.

IAMGROOT comments on Jun 7, 2018:
Well, now inquiring minds want to know what the hell happened? So please do share, if you feel comfortable doing so. Otherwise, just tell me to shut up. I've held many jobs in my life. My worst experience was when the IT company I worked for laid me off after moving me, repeatedly, into positions that were further and further from my core skill set and training, and then citing THAT as the reason for laying me off.

IAMGROOT comments on Jun 7, 2018:

Do you patronize religious businesses or do you avoid?
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 6, 2018:
Generally, I avoid them. I had an ex-GF who dragged me into Hobby Lobby. I was surprised at the selection of cute decorative junk, but that is not a place I would patronize on my own. That said, there is another local business run by a very religious and politically active family. It's an ice cream parlor and they constantly have a line out the door. Make their own ice cream, chocolate sauce, and other stuff. They just have an excellent product and a safe, family-friendly environment. I love one particular ice cream item on their menu. I'm a weak MoFo and can't resist this place. Plus, my kids love it and it has become a regular stop after my daughter finishes a musical theater performance. Have I given you enough excuses? LOL! GENERALLY, as I said, I have no problem boycotting controversial religious retail outlets, or the Evil Empire, but I can't resist good ice cream. =]

IAMGROOT comments on Jun 6, 2018:
I think that's awesome! All kids want their parents to be together, it's natural for them to want this. While I realize the togetherness you have is not "that" kind, I feel any solidarity your kids see has a positive effect on them. I am in a similar situation. My ex and I get along well enough to cooperate in the best interest of our teen-aged daughter and more. I don't see us getting back together, but there is nothing preventing us from being friends and I know my kids like that. (I have two)
Do you see it as child abuse forcing kids to go to Church when they are clearly sick?
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 5, 2018:
Forcing a child to go to church at all is child abuse. But let's assume it's not; in that case I'd agree with other commenters here who have compared it with going to school. Not only is the sick child being forced to complete an activity while they should be home resting, they might infect others.
Do you read Tolkien? C. S. Lewis?

What is your favorite musical instrument that you play ?
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 1, 2018:
Wait? I play a musical instrument? LOL! I don't. When I was in gradeschool, I think I had a music class at some point where I played the Recorder. I don't play anything but air guitar these days, and air drums in my car. But I'd love to learn to play the guitar and think it would be kick-ass fun to play in a band. Maybe in my old(er) age, when I have free time, I'll learn acoustical and electric guitars. =]

The future..
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 1, 2018:
Traditionally, the POTUS' religious affiliation is known, but not worn on their sleeve. Trump has (somewhat falsely, IMHO) used that X-tian label to leverage that vocal and active portion of the voter base very successfully. I don't think he's much of a X-tian. He just likes to give it lip service. To answer your question, I have no idea. I think that could come about someday when the majority of voters are non-believers and it is politically advantageous to be an Atheist, sadly.

Are you cheating if you are open to your partner about your other relationship(s)?
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 1, 2018:
I didn't vote because this isn't quite black and quite as you have set it up. As others have said, I think just being honest about an external relationship doesn't make it NOT cheating. If they disapprove, it's still cheating, just not lying and cheating.
Empty nest
IAMGROOT comments on Jun 1, 2018:
I'm not quite an empty nester. Hell, I'm not even close. My nearly 26 year old is home too. LOL! But I'd say that being alone and dealing with that kind of life-change would be much more difficult. Especially if you are retired and don't have anything going on (no volunteerism or other social activity/friends). Seems to me it would be easier and a mixture of happiness at regaining the freedom to do what you want, when you want, etc.; and sadness, because you'll miss having your kids around every day, regardless of what a pain in the ass they may have been. =]
What’s the thing you hate most about dating websites?
IAMGROOT comments on May 31, 2018:
I would probably have titled your post differently and said "What's The Thing You Hate Most About Online Dating?" Seems your real issue is with the relative anonymity and ease with which someone can lie via the Internet. Your actual questions and your poll are more about whether it's better or "more kind" to lie in order to spare someone's feelings than to be straight with them. In world of dating, where you're (if you'll pardon the expression) "feeling each other out" and trying to forge a connection, find chemistry with each other, get to know one another, I think honesty is the best policy. It always is, really. So no, it's not "kinder" to lie to someone on a dating platform to spare their feelings. As you said, if it ain't workin' it ain't workin, and everyone should cut their losses and move on before someone gets in too deep and it's that much more painful. =]
Do you believe all religions are the same, or that some are worse than others?
IAMGROOT comments on May 31, 2018:
At their core, I feel they are the same. They are all systems devised by humans to control other humans. That's what it boils down to for me.
James Bond
IAMGROOT comments on May 31, 2018:
I've had a long love affair with the Bond franchise (what dude hasn't?). My favorite classical Bond was Connery and my favorite film from his period is Diamonds Are Forever. I liked Roger Moore as well, and Man With The Golden Gun. I've enjoyed them all to some degree. My least favorite is Timothy Dalton. He's a good actor, and likable, but he's TOO nice to play Bond. Brosnan was good, but he was pretty Meh for me. I love him in other things. Daniel Craig is, IMHO, the best Bond ever. He's gritty and tough, yet still suave. I think he's the most believable, bad-ass Bond.
What is the quickest easiest meal that you make yourself and love?
IAMGROOT comments on May 31, 2018:
Um, ok, a little embarrassed here. When I've got nothing in the house and am too lazy to go out and get something, my fall-back meal is to microwave a can of Dennison's Chile Con Carne. I add a healthy (or unhealthy, depending on your viewpoint) of cheddar cheese, and then eat it with Cheez-Its (my love of Cheez-Its is no secret to this community. LOL!).
Does anyone think we will live in a post-religious society?
IAMGROOT comments on May 31, 2018:
I think we are heading in that direction as more and more become "enlightened." But we're not there yet and, sadly, I think things will get worse before they get better in this regard.

What are your Top 5 comic book films, if you like comics?
IAMGROOT comments on May 30, 2018:
Yeah, I have a similar issue with DC, but not with forced humor, specifically. My issue is that DC (with the exception of the Dark Knight films) has terrible script writers. I thought Suicide Squad was a terrible waste of talent in a potentially great film. Generally, I prefer all of the Marvel films, but I did like Wonder Woman. I also thought the Superman installment with Brandon Routh was good. Space was a great Lex Luthor. You made me think about this a bit because I really love SH films in-general: 1. Iron Man (and I can't eat just one, so all three with IM2 coming in 3rd in this group) 2. Captain America, First Avenger 3. Guardians of the Galaxy (yeah, both of'em) 4. The Dark Knight 5. Black Panther I haven't seen Infinity War yet. I agree with your forced humor opinion to an extent, particularly in Thor, Ragnarok. That was probably the worst Marvel script I've heard so far. In all the other films, it works pretty well, at least for me. Worth mentioning here also is the X-Men series. I was a big fan of the books as a teenager. In the films, I REALLY love the Quicksilver character who is a scene-stealer every time he appears. He single-handedly saves X-Men, Apocalypse for me.
Religious indoctrination is child abuse. Yes or no?
IAMGROOT comments on May 30, 2018:
I agree with everything you wrote above. I think there are two major topics here however: 1. The abhorrent, EVIL compulsory indoctrination/brainwashing of impressionable children by adults whom they trust. This is something that greatly angers me. I feel it's criminal. Along with that aspect comes all the stuff you indicated above designed to bring blind obedience. Damaging in the extreme. Thank goodness you were able to break free with some objective instruction from a source outside religion. =] 2. The altruism taught as a high moral standard by most religions (who require self-sacrifice and subservience to them first and everyone else afterwards). I completely disagree with this (as an Obvjectivist). I think rational self-interest is the natural state of Humankind. We work to improve ourselves and better our situations and as we succeed (in business, for example, we create jobs for others who also benefit from our success in this way) we bring others up with us. Most altruists would have you believe that any self-interest is accomplished at the expense of others and this is just plain wrong. Are there bad people in the world who will fuck over others, sure, but that is not the nature of Objectivism, nor of business (sorry, had to jump on my Capitalist soapbox for a microsecond). LOL!
So.

IAMGROOT comments on May 30, 2018:

I'm currently using Hulu to catch up on some shows.
IAMGROOT comments on May 30, 2018:
I'm enjoying Westworld on HBO right now. I don't pay for TV service (outside of HBO) through my ISP, but I do subscribe to Netflix. Here are some shows I've watched on both networks: Game of Thrones Breaking Bad (liked it so much I'm watching it a second time) Sons of Anarchy Daredevil (Marvel) Jessica Jones (Marvel) Luke Cage (Marvel) Iron Fist (Marvel) Turn - I started watching this, but my interest has waned in the second season The Punisher (Marvel) Defenders (Marvel mash up of DD, JJ, LC and IF above) Marvel's Agents of Shield (I watched this when I was paying for cable and could view ABC) Some comments on the Marvel shows. They are pretty good, for all being based on comic books. I love the tie-ins of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. The Punisher is also connected. I also dig that Agents of Shield meshed with the films to an extent. In that same vein, I love what Disney/Marvel has done with the Marvel Universe and how the storylines all interconnect. Yes, yes, I know, it's marketing, but it WORKS! LOL! It also makes for some kick-ass storytelling. For me, it's the perfect blend of character development, action, effects, and the fantastical world of super heroes. Nobody does it like Marvel. DC is failing miserably.
Do you find it offensive when theist think without a belief in god/gods, it’s impossible to have ...
IAMGROOT comments on May 30, 2018:
Not offended, no. However, it does bother me that, Christians especially (or maybe I think primarily of them since they are so influential and there are so many of them in the US), feel they own the moral high ground. I believe there is a small fraction of Christians who truly believe and who honestly try to live a "godly" life, following the commandments, etc. That said, I believe the majority of them are complete hypocrites. The spew their "morality" and then break all their own rules. The reality is that everyone has morals. Everyone has their own moral standard. There are bad people in the world with "bad" morals, who don't respect the general, common-sense behaviors of society, many of which are enshrined in law (murder, theft, assault are all illegal except in self-defense). Christians and Atheists exist across the spectrum of morality (good & bad). I feel that the percentage of actual "good" Atheists might be higher because Atheists at least give thought to what they are doing. Many religious people are kept in check by their fear of divine punishment. Morality is a subjective thing and the religious do not have a monopoly on "good morals."
Ok, be sensitive because I am talking about someone I love very much.

Well, since my elliptical broke I have fallen off the wagon somewhat. But I try to run my routine 4X/Wk. With cardio, some floor exercises (push-ups, crunches and leg-lifts, and resistance training, it usually takes two full hours.
Ok so I found some of my old drawings.

Not quite sure what you are asking. If you're asking where to sell them, you could go multiple routes: Ebay Amazon Etsy Etsy is an artisan site where you register yourself and post any art you have for sale. Another avenue you could consider is to take a look at Redbubble.com. They will transfer your artwork to T-shirts and other keepsakes/items. It will take a little investigating on the site, but it's probably pretty painless. On Redbubble, the items sell for established prices, so you don't really get to set pricing for your art. Also, I'm not sure how much you'd get, but I imagine you would get paid based on sales volume of your artwork. With regard to pricing, I suppose I would base that on the effort you put into each piece of work, and how elaborate/detailed it is. Hope this helps.
Do you remember your dreams?
IAMGROOT comments on May 29, 2018:
The only time I remember any of my dreaming (and usually not much) is if I'm dreaming just prior to waking up. I think dreams are nothing more than mind noise.

Trans and non-believers
IAMGROOT comments on May 29, 2018:
I guess that depends on which "society construct" we're talking about. Sadly, in the US, society is dominated still by believers. They are numerous and organized and have made great inroads into government. This scares the shit out of me. This "morally conservative" or whatever you want to call it, Christian majority have great influence over societal norms and their "morals" are rather closed-minded when it comes to accepting differences.

I've never had the opportunity, but I don't think I would have any problem dating a transwoman provided there was a mental connection and a physical attraction. Same criteria I would use for anyone.
Imagine yourself walking along a path to an unknown destination.

Sorry, but you are placing the burden of proof on the side that is requiring evidence. Religious "faith" is based solely on that; faith. It requires you to accept that for which there is no proof. Nonbelievers don't believe BECAUSE there is no proof. They are not required to disprove that which cannot be proven. Any assertion by anyone of the existence of a thing carries with it the burden of proof. Not the other way around. For this reason, I believe your example/analogy above is flawed.
My wife has decided that we should live apart, and begin divorce proceedings. The problem?

Well, that sucks! I've dealt with this scenario twice in my life. The first time around I had to move in with my parents temporarily while I regrouped. The second time, I was in much better shape, financially. I'm not wealthy, and I had to drain much of my retirement to establish my own household, but it's done. I don't know the specifics of your situation beyond what you described, but if that is an option for one of you (to move in with parents), it could work. But you mentioned that without her income, you can't afford to maintain the home you're in. If there are no children involved, that simplifies things greatly. You may have to entertain less appealing options, like becoming a sub-renter and getting a room in a house. These types of rental arrangements can be found on Craiglist and possibly on larger real estate sites like Zillow.com (but I think they focus on the whole unit, and not sub-leasing/renting). I'm sorry you're in this situation and hope this is helpful in some way.
