America: Do you believe Canada is a socialist country?
JeffMesser comments on Jun 16, 2018:
People need to learn what the heck "socialist" means before throwing it around like a bad word. that would start with the OP's clumsy definition as well. a lack of economic freedom is not the definition of a socialist country. it may be a characteristic depending on what you are observing and comparing it to - but the term itself means simply doing things for a social goal or in a social manner. thus either the ends or the means will be social ... that is directed towards satisfying a group of people vice an otherwise-specified goal or method. nothing more. now if you wanna get into means of production and ownership then we should bring in the word communism to show that these 2 terms are different. communism is one way to run a country in a socialist manner, but not the only way. thats why it is called "scientific socialism". ideally you want a economic method that is a fusion between socialism and capitalism. socialism to keep the state functional and protect the workers with some capitalistic tendencies to promote growth and investment.

What do you have faith in?
JeffMesser comments on Jun 15, 2018:
I have faith in yin and yang. That opposing forces occur with all change thus limiting its' duration and intensity. This happens with all things in life and the varying intensities, durations, and frequency all happen at different times. Sometimes you get a bunch of ups and no downs ... sometimes the opposite. But you always know the other side's coming and you can prepare for it or look forward to it.

JeffMesser comments on Jun 12, 2018:
1. Deniro is free to say what he wants. 2. I wouldn't go too altruistic in describing trump's motives regarding foreign policy. so far all we have seen are personal financial motives. 3. you should expect stern opposition in any venue containing intelligent persons such as agnostics or atheists because it appears you stand in support of that fricking idiot.
How do you cope ?
JeffMesser comments on Jun 11, 2018:
Take pleasure in simple things and change your perspective. I live by a simple 3 step process that has survived for thousands of years: 1. exercise self-control 2. give of yourself first 3. show compassion. In sanskrit you might see it as "damyata datta dayadhvam". In TS Eliot's poem "The Wasteland" is was "da da da". I seek to limit my ego and limit attachment to material things. Renunciation is the key my friend. Renunciation.

Greatest country song of all time.
JeffMesser comments on Jun 10, 2018:
Egads if you're not familiar with David Alan Coe ... He's basically a KKK member posing (back then) as a country western singer. He does one of those acts where they do all the antagonistic idea songs that get drunk crowds riled up ... like at college town bars. Many of the song titles can't even be repeated here. Among the most infamous was a song sung by a white man whose wife had left him for a back man. The worlds greatest country song is a good one though. even a blind squirrel sometimes ...

Abortion is a really tough one. I certainly want to respect the wishes of women vis a vis their own bodies, but at the same time the sanctity of life must be considered. Not having a particularly cheery after-life prospectus makes this troublesome for the secular. For us the sanctity of what life we have should be even more important. I tend to follow a Buddhist leaning here and favor harming no other.

Meaning of existence
JeffMesser comments on Jun 7, 2018:
There is a meaning to our existence - evolve and get better. we are meant to work together like social creatures and we do our greatest work when we share a common goal. we must evolve through homogenization or however and get past our differences so we can achieve a collective consciousness and share experience simultaneously or some such.

I'm reminded of this whenever I think the answers are somewhere else "out there."
JeffMesser comments on Jun 6, 2018:
The Buddha spoke of a group of blind wise men traveling the Indus valley. The men happened upon a sick elephant lying silently in the road and sought to identify the animal. The first felt only the animal's leg and thought it a tree. The second patted it on the side and thought it a hut. The third grabbed the trunk and declared it a large snake while the fourth felt the ears and thought it a plant. Only the 5th was wise enough to use the limited answers as clues. What we personally observe is often not enough. We need to take advantage of all the clues around us ... even those that are the result of NO answer.
Do u think it's possible to recover from a neglected childhood????
JeffMesser comments on Jun 6, 2018:
It is genuinely hard. Recovering from a lack of bonding with ones' mother is a huge detriment. It leads to a lack of trust that dramatically affects you for life. But the first step is to understand it happened and to recognize its' effect upon you. Then you may go about recovery. I have seen it. I have done it.

If she's worth that paltry bs to you then by all means go for it. Having some happiness and the experience of love for any time makes it a no-brainer. Just remember that with attachment comes suffering. That is the price.
This is just.
JeffMesser comments on Jun 6, 2018:
It is sad those kids were still that bitter so late into their lives. You hafta learn to put things aside and forgive. Show compassion. In the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad of the Hindu vedas there exists a simple, three-fold path or method to peace among one another: damyata datta dayadhvam. The "da da da" of TS Eliot's The Wasteland. exercise self control (damyata). give of yourself first (datta). show compassion (dayadhvam). This is how you fight the 3 demons that cause all harm upon mankind. And this path was laid out by mankind before ANY religions were formed on this earth. This was the wisdom of the first small communities of man ... from as far west as the British Isles, as far north as Scandinavia, and extending all the way into China down to the tip of SE Asia and back into the Indus valley. Ancient wisdom of man from his first tribes and shacks. Don't live your life in hate and anger.
When growing up there was talk of the world being over populated.
JeffMesser comments on Jun 6, 2018:
Yeah, we always seem to forget we have some internal mechanisms that vary our population. Our "copulation rate" is NOT a constant. Some organisms spawn more when conditions are bad or questionable ... and some spawn much less. They can't get Japanese young adults to engage in sex anymore. Same with a few other cultures. The magic number is far below 1.1. Not sure how long it would stave off our problems before more calamitous things happened. We're putting a double whammy on the earth with environmental and resource problems at the same time.

All of life is not an ass kicking my friend ... but it IS all about balance. The more luxurious and majestic the highs, then the more spectacular the lows. Understanding the balance of things allows you to see a bigger picture when the fine tuning becomes harrowing or particularly painful. It is also the entire base of eastern philosophy.
