Do you think Science will ever discover how consciousness began?
JeffMesser comments on May 31, 2018:
meh, the old triune model of the brain really shows us what happened. we have our old lizard brain and it picked up an emotional component in the limbic system and then a thinking component in the cortex. each new segment built on top of the last.
Does anyone have experience with ravens and crows.
JeffMesser comments on May 31, 2018:
I have been studying corvids for years. There is nothing wrong with befriending a murder of crows, or a raven, or some magpies. Like many others mentioned they are very intelligent and will hang out. I dont know anything about human/avian diseases though - my studies focus mainly on behavior and neuron activity. Try some cut up weiners. They really seem to like those. You can put a couple of pieces in the open and then make a simple puzzle to get the rest. put them in a sandwich container then put a lid halfway on it. the next time put a rock on the lid. etc... they love puzzles and challenges.

Thus in Washington state it is completely legal to screw a chicken and then slam its' head in a shutting car door just as you ejaculate to get that quivering dead feeling. just an FYI.

One of the things I like the most about Buddhist philosophy is it’s emphasis (generally) on ...
JeffMesser comments on May 27, 2018:
I couldnt agree more. I constantly have people ask me about my "teacher" or which Buddhist train of thought I follow. I see this as a HUGE disservice and now I wont even answer. Shakyamuni Buddha taught that all things are in transition - and this includes our understanding. Becoming comfortable with the status quo staying as is becomes a form of attachment. You must be constantly changing. For years I have gone back and forth on the various views of the self. So much that I completely understand Buddha's half-hearted answer to the question. I dont feel bound by either view. I see the reasoning behind both as well as the reasoning for all 3 views: no self, yes self, and no answer. I think it's important to consider that naming our view places constraints on it. As Kierkegaard noted: "to name me is to limit me".

JeffMesser comments on May 23, 2018:
welcome! Once you find yourself adept at focusing then practice guided thought. Thats where you follow the same practice and then when you're clear follow the first thought in your mind down the rabbit hole. Then just keep taking it further and further. This is how I first reached enlightenment. We wear little ruts in our brains with the same thought patterns all the time and everything seems tainted in that direction ... that is until you take psychoactive drugs or use guided meditation. Doing this allows you to often approach the issue or thought from a different angle - often one you'd never have thought of in normal "mode".

When if ever will the press and dems stand up and rebuff Trumps outrageous distortions of the truth?
JeffMesser comments on May 23, 2018:
trump's presence is only the mechanism. all of this comes back to a discrete minority of people with fringe interests along with a bunch of fiscal conservatives refusing to budge an inch no matter how foul Trump's behavior. We have become a system of politics where only sweeping majorities win now. This is due to both ignorance and apathy. That is what we need to fix. We need for both sides to recognize the other and take money out of politics.

Thich Nhat Hanh: What is Nirvana and How Does It End Suffering?
JeffMesser comments on May 21, 2018:
This is the debate that is so hard for me to engage in with my SE Asian buddhist friends. They are so bull-headed about saying "no self" that they won't even listen to my perspective. When I stepped back to examine the situation I understood the Buddha's perspective and exactly why he chose not to take a side on the matter. There IS a self and there is NOT a self, both. The truth is there is only awareness. That awareness is actually the "self" apart from the individual filters added on by our senses and mind and karma and past choices ... the whole littany of things that makes us who we are aside from pure awareness. The idea and conception of an individual self is merely a sham - there is no such thing. We are all one but our oneness is split into a bunch of individual filters. So there IS a self, and there is not. But I dont blame Buddha Shakyamuni for standing on the narrow middle of the issue - just as he did on eating meat and as the Dalai is doing on self-immolation. Neither wanted their answer to decide the question as there are legitimate positions on either side. I am still working on my conception of karma and how that fits in. Because I believe that karma is the one thing that does survive - but in 2 manners. First as an issue of probabilities. By our personal observations and choices we have set certain probabilities in motion with a resultant still pending. Who will be the receiver? Second there is the vedic belief that as we progress higher our rebirth position improves. If I reach enlightenment now without nibana, will my rebirth be as an enlightened being? Those are my questions @awarenessnow. Any answers would be helpful.

Is Bill Maher the best (living) atheist comedian that does Intelligent humor?
JeffMesser comments on May 19, 2018:
Most of the best stand up comedians are atheist ... and even the ones who aren't are pretty shaky when it comes to religion. I would still say Jeselnik and Bo Burnam are among the most intelligent along with Jeff Ross and Lewis Black. Bill Burr claims to be catholic but only because his family would murder him if he said otherwise. He may as well be an atheist. Patton Oswalt too.

INTRODUCTIONS if you please.
JeffMesser comments on May 19, 2018:
Thank you very much! I appreciate the space and chance to expand my sangha. I was born in the southwest US as a baptist. Learned the folly of such beliefs as a teenager and plodded along "so unaligned" until life piled many things on all at once. I was at the bottom of the barrel physically, mentally, socially, professionally, familially, economically. You name it. But through study of the Upanishads, the Dhammapada, the Bhagavad Gita, and parts of the vedas I started to cure my depression by seeing these events as gains and advantages vice losses. My attachments cast aside it was easier to manage my life and find my true self. I found my path and reached enlightenment first on October 26, 2016. I have since reached basic milestones in my progress on 5 other occasions in 2017 and once so far this year. While it saddens me to have found my path so late in life, it is built on a very solid foundation of loss and crippling devastation. I would never have changed myself but for my previous suffering. So to that extent my life proved Buddha Shakyamuni's conclusions regarding suffering as motivation correct. I currently am in a canonical dispute with many Buddhist teachings due to my views on the self. Thus I completely understand why the Buddha himself refused to answer that question with finality. But my views had already grown beyond the dharma I had initially adopted from Buddhists in Sri Lanka and Thailand and Vietnam (among others). I found many of them to be every bit as close-minded as the Baptists of my youth. At first I decided that I couldnt possibly really be Buddhist and still take in all the vedas and the Gita as I do. But then a friend reminded me that the Buddha himself said we are to be the best of ourselves and not rely on prior teachings or beliefs. Be your own island. Everything interconnects and is in transition so it all gets to you eventually - as long as you get some core issues down pat. Now I consider myself a vedic sage more than anything else and took the name Kauva Aatma after a ceremony at the OKC southside meditation center. I spend my days learning about the vedic culture and trying to remove ego and materiality from my life. namaste

The goal of any fundamentalist religion always has and always will be total control of females.
JeffMesser comments on May 18, 2018:
your first assumption is faulty. patriarchy comes as a by-product of our respective roles in a hunter/gatherer group. when we became farmers our group dynamics changed. we made larger groups to accommodate the new tasks and we incorporated more outsiders. THAT was why we ended up with religion. we had expectations for everyone to get along in close company and those evolved into community standards which become religion.
