Anyone besides me have questions about the shroud of Turin, or the question of the Stigmata?
JeffMesser comments on Apr 29, 2018:
why do people assume a mystical answer when they are confronting an unknown? thats why we are in this whole mess of deities within a religion in the first place. It all started out as the "rules" (or whatever we want to call them) that existed in the little communities that were bound together by farming. We had shifted from nomadic hunter/gatherers grouped mostly as a small, immediate family to little farms with many family members and other families even ... spreading to the point of making the first villages. To live together they had a few rules that would inevitably arise as we were always accustomed to just familial closeness in the past. This is where the doctrines that would eventually form religious beliefs first began - from the social interaction necessary at the shift from hunter/gatherers to farmers. If we'd left the stupid "assumed mysticism" out of it we'd have the history of a nice set of social documents that could refine future governance. Instead we taint it with "spiritual beliefs".

Purpose
JeffMesser comments on Mar 28, 2018:
I believe our actual purpose is to keep mankind pointed in the right direction as we steer through this twisty path of diversity towards the inevitable homogenization. Once there we can start to develop collective consciousness and evolve. In the grand scheme their silly beliefs mean little. But in the minute details they cause a rather bumpy ride. Sometimes that ride outweighs the good it allows for in terms of social conduct. Sometimes it doesn't. It's up to them. But don't push the fish.

Diversity training let the controversy begin
JeffMesser comments on Mar 20, 2018:
the only thing that will ever actually cure our diversity ills will be homogenization. being suspect of things that are different is the very nature of our mind. we will never completely educate our way over that hump. the trick is to not destroy ourselves before that happens. Truth is I suspect at some point our population will dwindle to a much smaller size and many of these diversity issues and such will disappear for more pressing concerns.

Early Humans Slept Around with More than Just Neanderthals
JeffMesser comments on Mar 17, 2018:
I find this research to be absolutely fascinating. I believe the differences that gave us the edge over both denisovan and neandertal (the ability to articulate) also led to our hyperjump in mental evolution and an encephalization rate of over 7.5%. Being able to relate our knowledge and carry it forward to later generations made us into modern human beings. It allowed us to change from hunter-gatherers to farmers, settle into societies, and adjust to our enviorment instead of moving with the seasons.
