I am really down about my new job.

I suffered heart attacks as a result of stress while putting on crininal defense trials. Money is not worth your health. I scaled back after the bypasses and my life is much much better. I'd say ASAP.
Marvel or DC?
JeffMesser comments on Mar 4, 2018:
Marvel obviously. My only DC loves were Legion of Superheroes and Teen Titans. I also read Flash and Atom a bit. While in Marvel I loved X-men, FF, Dr. Strange, Defenders (with Valkyrie), Iron Fist, Luke Cage, What If, Spidey, Hulk, and Avengers.

JeffMesser comments on Mar 4, 2018:
This and dealing with trumpeters are two of my biggest weaknesses. I have the hardest time not engaging them. One of my favorite questions was inquiring about how copulation could create an eternal soul. The truth is we all choose our own path to happiness. Some are just unfortunate enough to pick hard ones while others pick much easier ones to follow. If I can keep that mantra in my head then my empathy builds for them and I leave them alone. But it's not easy because they are soooo lost and such inviting targets.

What causes horror music to run through your head?
JeffMesser comments on Mar 4, 2018:
The only thing that scares me is the movie "The Exorcist". My parents didn't want me to read it or Amityville Horror so I hid in the closet to read both. HUGE mistake. Then I saw the movies and while Amityville was ok (the book was much scarier), "The Exorcist" scared the urine from my body. I still shudder at the mere thought of that movie.

JeffMesser comments on Mar 4, 2018:
When my wife left me and took the kids I was nuked. I screwed up my job and that made me have to change my career path. Then my mom was committed to a mental hospital and my father passed away. Then thanks to all the stress I had a few heart attacks, died twice, and got a triple bypass. My life sucked. Or so I thought. I thought all these losses were a curse - turns out losing all my attachments was a blessing. It made my world so much smaller, and easier to control. Or not control actually. I was trying to guide my life into some archetypal format that really didnt fit me. It would keep veering out of control because it wasn't my path. I finally found mine as a result and I am all the better for it now. I hope you find yours as well. namaste.

Are you fulfilled?
JeffMesser comments on Mar 4, 2018:
You have been unfairly influenced by the archetypes of "normal human behavior". Don't cling to the nesting/family standard if your life isn't on that track. It will make you feel like you must have something else and someone else when nothing is further from the truth. You don't need others to make you feel happy and you can have others without doing it the way the "norm archetypes" suggest. Gain some objectivity, work on other things, and let it all unfold. The universe will take care of you.

Punctuated Equilibrium in Homo Sapiens
JeffMesser comments on Mar 2, 2018:
I don't think it's necessarily just technology. We share a similar frontal cortex communication center with corvids, elephants, orcas etc... . We had it as cro-magnon as did neandertal and denisovan. But as all 3 were fighting starvation the last of the ice age it was only us who eventually survived and turned from hunter-gatherer to farmer. Thats not an intuitive change and not one made by the other hominids. But I credit (not just me, but others too) our ability to vocalize with making the use of that comm center in the social arena much like the crows and dolphin pods and orca and elephants have done. We had the biological advantage with the higher windpipe allowing reasonance of the sounds coming from the vocal cords so we could actually speak. This communication, once just between family members in grunts and intuition, now now allowed for the storing and passing of knowledge and interactivity to allow us to build farms and communities. So the environmental changes allowed evolutional changes which would draw a good parallel of environmental changes with tech. same same. Just a thought.

Who is getting Academy Awards on Sunday? Who deserves them?
JeffMesser comments on Mar 2, 2018:
Best Picture - Get Out, Ladybird, or Shape of Water. The others all have flaws. I personally preferred Get Out. Lead Actor - I really thought the best was Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour. But some sympathy votes will probably choose either Chalamet for a gay role or DDL for it being his last picture. Lead Actress - Frances McDormand by a mile. Meryls role wasn't that good, Margot wasn't that good, Saoirse did good but I don't think they'll give it to her. Sally Hawkins could be a sympathy choice. Supp. Actor - I am gonna say DaFoe even though Woody and Sam rockwell were both good. I could see Plummer as a sympathy vote for what he had to do to finish. Supp. Actress - Strictly between Laurie Metcalf and Allison Janney. Both of them had excellent roles and did excellent jobs with them. I prefer Metcalf's because she turned into my mom ... but Janney probably was the best. That was a rich character. She was damn good. Octavia's role was to be herself and I didnt consider the other two even in the ballgame.

Noam Chomsky said that both aethist and theist organisations are doing the same sales.
JeffMesser comments on Mar 2, 2018:
Religions are united in differing groups by their different belief sets. This gives them individual identities and a concept to group around. You don't get that in atheism. Not having anything is not something to to really group around. You have no actual traits or ideas to bond you together. The lack of an idea is itself not an idea. So religion provides identity while atheism provides nothing more than an asterisk.
What's the most "sinful" thing you've ever done?
JeffMesser comments on Mar 2, 2018:
I was a juvenile delinquent growing up. I stole a lot and committed acts of vandalism. This went on from like 1973 until about 1981. Then when I started college at OU in 83 we stole all the baby Jesus' (Jesii?) from nativity scenes all over Norman, OK and left them in the hall at walker 8E dorm on OU campus. We also pulled the fire alarm at Adams a couple of times and also I stole the big Sirloin Stockade cow from the one on Lindsey and dragged it behind the Delta tau Delta house. Oh, and we took the concrete hamburglar from the Lindsey McDonalds and left it in a girls room on Adams 9th floor. Thats all. Other than that I am just a stoner. Never even cheated on my wife.

Does anyone think being somewhat cynical is bad?
JeffMesser comments on Mar 2, 2018:
Well, it does tend to open up inquiry which leds to knowledge. But it also propagates "me" thinking by the cynic. At some point we have to trust in others to elevate our thinking and move into better circles in the world we create around ourselves. Understanding cynicism but not living in it is the key IMO. I live by the tenets Damyata Datta Dayadhvam. From the Brihadaranyaka upanishad. Exercise self-control, give of yourself first instead of expecting from others, and be compassionate. I have found that this allows me to salvage any situation and creates a world around me that centers on good things.

Shrooms are actually the safest drug of any with many positive psych effects. But that's all. Well and this remote control. So weed, shrooms, this remote control ... and my dog Pook. And this chair. And thats all I need.

Why Women Aged 35 45 Are Single and Unhappy The Paradox of Declining Female Happiness - YouTube
JeffMesser comments on Mar 2, 2018:
The video sounds like more of the same bullshit propagated by the Nation of Islam and the US fundamentalist christian movement. They think ancient archetypes are the only possible method of making mankind happy. It's all a bunch of hooey. Of course those roles are pounded into our heads ad nauseum for years so many will fall in line with their thoughts. But those who arent sheep will think for themselves and move beyond that crap. If their view had been true then man would never have converted from hunter-gatherer to farmer and civilization would never have been born. Again - it's all hooey.

JeffMesser comments on Mar 2, 2018:
I find the comparisons between hominid and other species to be fascinating in this area. We share similar frontal cortex communication center structures with some other fauna such as elephants, orca, dolphins, corvid (crows, ravens, jays, magpies). As a result those animals share certain behaviors with us that we generally classify as typically "human". Most of these behaviors focus around empathy and social structure. They organize themselves into groups that follow the "golden rule" and they mourn their losses. Crows, elephants, and orca have been seen performing types of ceremonies acknowledging their dead. Funerals. I have watched one of them myself among a murder of crows in my neighborhood. It makes me wonder if certain environmental factors that drove us to increased intelligence will affect these creasures as well in the future if their species survives.

JeffMesser comments on Mar 2, 2018:
As humans we are at a bit of a disadvantage in this universe. Everything around us of import seems to have a much longer lifespan than our 75 years. So we evaluate things on a much smaller scale than a truly objective view would likely entail. We look at things in relation to a few years or maybe a generation (20 years) while geologic events are viewed in thousands of years, global ones in millions and cosmic ones in billions. In this instance we're evaluating the effects of a Presidency and culture shift on America ... and that likely would require a view over decades rather than a few months. My point is step back. Separate yourself from it and get an objective viewpoint. The battle between liberalism and conservatism in our country is best viewed as a teeter-totter that overcompensates one way then another vice just staying balanced in the middle. View the balance instead of the extreme swings. Know that the factors that make it swing to the left or the right are the things that make us sweat it - but the balance will eventually come. The right's horrid acts will spur more activity from the left and they will rise up to overtake the right. Then they will swing it too far and the reverse will happen. And if it causes the country to change its' form then that is also the teeter-totter of yet another balance between democratic values and autocratic ones. Gain a better perspective. Thats the true solution.

I've been chased no fewer than 7x the last few years and I am certainly no prize. Thankfully they're most all churchies and as soon as they find out I am a heathen Buddhist they give me space. I like my simple, unattached, low-T life. Plus chicks are so busy man. I prefer to hang out, listen to The Wall, discuss world events, drink some tea, smoke some weed, and philosophize. If we need to boost the energy then I put on the Violent Femmes. Most women shy away from my preferred lifestyle.

Overall I am proud of many of its' ideas.

Yes, very similar to my family situation. My family has basically shunned me since I told them all of my use of weed and my life as a hindu sage. They are all southern baptists and rather intolerant of differing views. I have learned to get high before arriving for thanksgiving dinner, not breach the subjects unless directly asked, and bring the cranberry salad.
