JeffMesser replies on May 22, 2018:
@moNOtheist Not having a traditional teacher actually aided me in my path as a Buddhist and vedic. It meant I have to take every concept and convert it to the western equivalent that I understood to see if it withstood current science and math. Much of the scientific knowledge of the east in those areas is horribly dated. I separated those things and included current western thoughts in the sciences and math and quantum physics. What didnt get washed over however was Indian psychology. The east is far far more advanced in that regard. Only now is the west admitting the advantages of mindfulness and meditation. By not having a traditionally-influenced teacher I was not subject to their preconceived notions. I learned Buddhism on my own through study of the Upanishads, the Dhammapada, and the Gita. I used strictly sanskrit of the original teachings (as remembered by monks for centuries obviously) and came to my own conclusions. Amazingly it led me to the same conclusions and Shakyamuni Buddha and even the current Dalai Lama. There exists a self or awareness or consciousness or whatever you want to label it today and it exists in all things. On its' own it is and does nothing except observe differences from moment to moment. The vibration or relative vibration of things from one moment passing to the next. Our senses interpret those changes as sight or smell or sound and the information is a filter to our self. This is how it "sees" the world. That self, our memories, our senses, and our karma all make up that illusion of an individual self when there really is none. Once3 you know it's there, through introspection and meditation, it's a matter of seeing what happens when the shell dies. It continues to exist but at the level of growth previously experienced through the momentum of karma. Hindus, Buddhists, and others try to explain away the resultant karma and where/who it acts upon. That is where the anomaly lies that some find reincarnation. We just call it rebirth. We are actually just awareness in the flesh and when this flesh falls away we are just present in some other shell at relatively the same level if the Hindus are to be believed.

Why is there so much anger here?
David1955 comments on May 22, 2018:
The directness and adamance of position as @Slappy_Longarms nicely put it, is a reflection of the determination of many of us not to let the religious and religions kick our ass, as you phrased it.
JeffMesser replies on May 22, 2018:
I can understand that. My issue is ... why not just let churchies do their thing? They're the ones picking a harder path. I just smh over them.

We are changed into what ever it is we will end up as, then be changed once again. Just as we are the product of a stars death, something will be the product of us. It's interesting to think that we are actually immortal.
JeffMesser replies on May 22, 2018:
I dont believe WE are immortal in this sense. I do think that the awareness that exists inside us is though and I think it is all one big ether.

JeffMesser replies on May 22, 2018:
@AMGT I dont remember trying to convince you. I wasn't proselytizing. I said this is what I believe. My reasons for it are my own - after decades of study and years of meditation. I have chased religion step by step all the way back to early man discovering a life other than as a hunter-gatherer. This proved to me that it is a construct of man and how ... but there was never some "unsmoking gun" to delegitimize religion or some piece of evidence that says "all religions are wrong - sincerely, some reputable source". But the lack of any substantiation does tell me things. Asking me to prove things we can't describe now is like asking a caveman that air exists. It is near impossible to prove a negative. Believe or not believe what you want. I choose happiness.

@AMGT there's no reason for you to be mean. just because you dont have the tenacity to learn and grow doesn't mean you should disparage others. your anger will never find an answer, it will only increase your suffering. @AMGT spare me the drama - death is personal to all of us. I have already been dead twice and am living in the middle of a medical death sentence now. Proof of the heretofore unknown? You think you are unique in demanding proof to the answer of the unanswerable. There is so much we have yet to understand - we are millenia away from an answer in the form you seek. All we can do now is hypo-test and find alternatives that fit. You are welcome to believe as you will. I will observe the teachings of the Upanishads, the Dhammapada, and the Gita. I will live my life by three simple words ... damyata datta dayadhvam.

JeffMesser replies on May 19, 2018:
@AwarenessNow I understand. The lists and close-mindedness of SE Asian buddhists that I dealt with drove me away from a typical teaching situation. I decided guided, independent study suited me best and it has worked very well for me to date. I spent nearly 30 years finding my way. Through all the searching and study over numerous religious and philosophical influences I finally gleaned one rule on my own that guided me to the light ... if your belief set excludes anyone then you need a better belief set. This is how I found my way to Buddhism and study of the Upanishads and the Dhammapada were my tools. I have made sure to include animal biology, psychology, quantum physics, sociology, and a cadre of other topics in my studies - an approach that I found support in from the Dalai Lama (he even talked about it last night). I have found a biological basis for empathy and, thus, the golden rule as well as a biological tie to quantum mechanics so that probabilities changed may in fact be influenced to affect cellular activity in the brain. I know that everything meshes together to formulate the whole - we just dont know it all yet. So I seek beliefs that encompass everything. A string-theory of secular religion.

@SallyMc I am in OKC so please dont try to instruct me on underfunded schools. Texas schools put up signs to recruit OKC teachers. I have been fighting that battle for years. Just as I fought the school board battle when children were kidnapped from Southgate/Rippetoe and tried to take others from Plaza Towers so we addressed the security issue - just like we addressed it again when the last school commissioner was elected and brought up the issue. I know what I am talking about. You are speaking from a knee-jerk position.

why do you say you're not a buddhist now? I am not trying to pry so please forgive the intrusion. The reason I ask is that I have grown beyond my initial dharma and consider my beliefs more vedic in nature than buddhist given my views on the self. I just wondered if for some reason you grew beyond it also.

@SallyMc you are so blinded by your rage that you aren't thinking clearly. I have no problems with limiting guns. Thats not the point to his comment. Guns or no guns you need to build schools with greater security in mind. I don't support guns either. Your shortcoming is you keep trying to argue instead of thinking.

@SallyMc excuse me . . rude much? dont try to paint me as some sort of ammosexual. It's not much of a logical leap to think that better security at the schools is also a big consideration - no matter what the views on weapons. Ingress and egress points are a major concern for any building that needs to be able to lock down. you need to temper your temper and think more.

oh certainly. I have a more internet-based sangha now and the close-mindedness towards eastern beliefs that I often feel in Oklahoma is matched only by the same close-mindedness I have found from Buddhist arahats in Sri Lanks, Thailand, Malaysia, India, and Viet Nam. So closed that they havent evolved their views on certain things, such as science, over the past 100 years. It's like speaking to someone from the past. And they are very persistent and stubborn in retaining their versions of the universe despite the most basic of current scientific knowledge. But those are not representative of either Buddhism generally or the dalai specifically.
