It is true you can't fix your girlfriend. if she recovers she will be told that a non alcoholic can never understand an alcoholic. It's very frustrating living with someone and want to help them and just not knowing how. I have found that selfishness is a big part of alcoholism ,and selfishness is even a bigger part of recovery.

I attend the Unitarian Universalist fellowship and we believe the same thing..we study all religions and take what is useful and leave the crap behind. We even invite an evangelical preacher to come to our church to give a sermon so we can help his minisry raise money. His ministry focuses on the addicted ,forgotten ones living on the street. He mentioned he was terrified at the idea of giving a sermon to Unitarian universalists. he understands that we're non-believers. He can pull off a story like Noah's Ark in a way that even an atheist could agree with. He admitted that it didn't actually happen, and gave a secular translation that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I can relate to that. I grew up in an elkaholic home. My father is a recovered alcoholic ,my sister and my brother both died from the disease. all of the men in my life that I've had serious relationships with had some form of addiction.
