Are morality and empathy basically the same?
LenHazell53 comments on Jan 22, 2019:
Not at all, some of the worst of sadists have been completely emphatic, so as to savour the pain of others, if they did not understand and empathise with the agony they inflicted, they could derive no joy from it. Morally they can know it is wrong and get a kick from doing wrong, but sharing in the pain of another requires an emphatic bond.

Should sharia law be banned from the West?
LenHazell53 comments on Jan 18, 2019:
Sharia holds the same status in the west as do church courts, which do exist still and have since the middle ages. These religious "law" systems have only the power that people give them, if you do not accept their authority and do not recognise them they have no authority at all. If in trying to exert authority they break the law of the land, they are liable to prosecution themselves. A lot of clubs, institution and still some churches especially teh Mormons and the scientologists do have their own internal disciplinary systems even foorball clubs do, but no matter what they may CALL themselves they are not courts, they are not law making or enforcing bodies, they are people playing at authoritarianism. The best thing to do is ignore them or report them to the actual law when they go to far. You may as well try to ban your teacher for gving you detention.

Kosher and halal ban
LenHazell53 comments on Jan 17, 2019:
The right thing but done for the wrong reasons. Ritual slaughter involved the production of Kosher and halal products is an abomination of animal cruelty, that should rightly be opposed and outlaws by reason and compassion. However this ban or rather this sanction is the result of right wing politics, a simple attack on a segment of society meant to make their lives difficult and residence undesirable and to score brownie points of the racist section of the right with the morons. In the long term this does more harm to the cause of animal welfare than good and will not achieve it's intent as the meat products will simply be imported for elsewhere at a financial and human cost that will make children suffer.

It is an interesting hypothesis and to some extent mirrors the myths of the ancient Amazons who at the birth of their children cauterized the right breast of the girls so it would never grow and inhibit spear throwing or archery, but would cause a deep resentment and fuel anger. Boy children had the lower right leg removed, so as to inhibit them from becoming warriors and to direct more blood to the penis for the sake of fertility. Ancient myths are filled with child mutilation, always with some warped logic behind the practice for "the greater good". It should be simple logic and reason in the 21st century to consider cutting bits off infants as barbaric, stupid and cruel, but it is not, mainly because two of the worlds major religions still advocate it.

I have argued for years that infant circumcision is abuse. On this very site I had one lady do the nearest thing I have ever seen in written form to a fit of hysterics, telling me her son were very grateful to have had bits chopped of them when still babies, when I asked how they could possibly know the difference she informed me that the real reason she did it was that uncircumcised penis's invariably have a disgusting stench and that she did not want her future daughters in laws to suffer that. Perhaps teaching her husband to wash his might have been a less drastic solution.

U.S. Catholics' Faith in Clergy Is Shaken
LenHazell53 comments on Jan 15, 2019:
I saw a news article a year or so back about a Catholic church in Manchester that simply could not get a new priest. Young seminary graduates would not do there, nor old lags waiting out their time to their retirement, it was simply too dangerous and with failing congregations to pointless and unprofitable. Finally they recruited a young priest from Nigeria and moved him in. At the time of the interview the poor chap was distraught, his faith shaken and his mind and nerves in tatters. He had come from a congregation of a hundred plus, singing happy families who believed utterly to find himself in a huge church with a congregation of 14 people all over sixty who wanted dirges and Latin masses, and buildings that had boarded up windows and bars on those not broken. Mother Church deserted him and refused to move him out, he had been mugged and subjected to racial hate crime and 'surprisingly' found his prayers going unanswered. I will admit to feeling sorry for the man, or rather boy because even at nearly thirty his maturity was no where near up to coping with the task with which he had been lumbered, he had two options, stick it out and hope things got better, or resign from the priest hood, get a job until he could save enough money to go home. In the town where I was born stood a huge catholic church known as St. Hilda's, the size of a cathedral, it stood empty for years, was a listed building of historical significance so could not be altered, modernised or demolished but had no congregation as the entire area it once served had undergone urban renewal. Yet still it incurred ground rent and maintenance costs to keep it safe. The Diocese tried to sell it to the local council and local business but to no avail, the preservation order and listing made it inviable for anyone to take it on. Then one night their prayers were answered and the whole building burned to the ground, no one called the fire brigade for an hour after the blaze started and the fire engines could not get to the church because of an INconvenient road traffic collision on the only road in and out. So sad, but fortunately the building was insured as it was still being used as a repository of church records. This the state of the RC in the inner cities and industrial towns of the UK now.
We must be ever vigilant to halt nonsense like this ! WHY can't they keep it in their damn churches ...

Britons View Atheists As More Moral Than Believers, Religion More Harmful Than Good
LenHazell53 comments on Jan 15, 2019:
In the UK Christianity will have died in the next few generations. Given the choice children don't want to go to church and if forced stop as soon as they are able. Even young Muslims are turning away or simply paying lip service to their beliefs and almost every Jew I know under the age of 40 claims only to be culturally Jewish. In an enlightened and educated society religion cannot thrive, which is why the religious are trying desperately to retain the grip they once had on schooling, not to further it, but to censor it. Those who cling to creationism and fundamentalism are beginning to either totally embrace it and become flat earthers or are becoming so aware that they are objects of ridicule that they rethink their stance. Christians are becoming aware that their leaders and elders are condemning the Chinese for rewriting scriptures while in effect censoring their own. Hypocricy is rampant and can no longer be hidden under the guise of sanctity and even the less educated in the developed world are beginning to see the problems. Which is why the only place being bombarded with missionaries and showing church growth for all faiths are those places where education is non existent and there is no internet, the biggest enemy religion has ever faced, an infinite source of free information and open comment.

LenHazell53 comments on Jan 15, 2019:
The original meaning of the word religious was to deliberately tie or bind yourself to something anew (from Ligia to bind, the same root as the word ligature) so restricting your life for the purposes of lifestyle, faith and worship is technically religious no matter what the object. The word religious has gained a very specific meaning in the English language over time but still pretty much amounts to a strong association to a particular focus in life.

The delay until 2020 is due to one determining factor: money! [bleedingcool.com]

It is utter nonsense the BBC has been fully capable of funding itself for years, truth is it is a gravy train and wastes money at an unbelievable rate on perks and fringe benefits for executives, for favourites and to finance radio and TV that no one watches or listens to. The License fee is a joke, and could be abolished tomorrow, the BBC actually spend more money on catching and prosecuting license fee evaders than it generates. Since the government appoint all the governors of the BBC it has pretty much become a retirement plan for old MPs Lords and civil servants as a reward for services rendered, where they need do bugger all and get huge bonuses for not doing it. It is a scandal ridden, twisted organization at the top and often ruins it's own success' when they conflict with other interests outside. a case in Point being when Michael Grade was Director general of the BBC and killed off Doctor Who for the first time. WHY? Because the Grade family owned ITC entertainment which worked for the ITV channels producing adventure and science fiction programmes that continually got their arses kicked by Doctor Who. Grade became chairman of the Board of Governors but resign in 2005 to work for ITV PLC and within months Doctor who was back on the air. Someone in the hierarchy of Aunty Beeb again has it in for The Doctor and is slowly but surely poisoning the show to death.
An adult version of a children's joke: Once upon a time, there were three beautiful and voluptuous ...
