IMPEDIMENT.
LenHazell53 comments on Nov 4, 2018:
The literal origin of the word is quite sinister, an impediment in Greco-Roman times was the shackle on the legs of slaves and criminal. (pedi = feet mentum = movement im/in = negative) [Of course today we would never do something as inhumane as that ] Edit thanks to @Davekp Of course today never would we do something so inhumane.

LenHazell53 comments on Nov 4, 2018:
Everyone forgets the second part of the Midas Myth. In order to have the curse removed by the god Pan Midas agreed in return to judge a contest between Pan and Apollo as to who was the finest musician, but unknown to all, Pan had Bribed Midas beforehand by removing the golden touch. Pan played his Lyre and Apollo his flute and though Apollo was obviously superior Midas Judged in his favour, Apollo was furious and screamed "If your ears are so beastial, they shall take on a form befitting them!" Immediately Midas' ears grew in to the form of those of a Jackass and from that day forth all who made obviously stupid decisions became known as a Jackass in honour of Midas' folly

You are quite right, in with the benefit of hind sight we can see clearly what some were struggling to speak of without the tools of language and scientific discovery now commonplace. Friedrich Nietzsche for instance insisted on the idea that there were two fundamentally different forms of people, the Ubermensch and the herd, the one naturally tribal and conformist the other innovative and individual. Over a century later it was discovered that Neanderthal man was very much a none tribal species who developed art and weapons, made wheels and discoveries long before their Cro Magnon tribal cousins who nonetheless interbred with them resulting in individuals who show high Neanderthal/Ubermensch physical and mental traits and who tend to be societies innovators, scientists, leaders and artists. Spinoza, Epicures, Kant laid the foundations of the arguements for modern atheism and scientific thought, Plato unknowingly created the forms of thought later corrupted in to theology and Aristotle all but invented propaganda by media manipulation.

What will it take to stop abuses done by religion?
LenHazell53 comments on Nov 3, 2018:
Education, world wide. As little as two hundred and fifty years ago Christianity wield terrible power in the west, today it is a toothless tiger, it still has claws is still dangerous but no longer rules over communities in the way it did and each generation yields a greater and greater harvest of atheists and agnostics, the churches are emptying but for the old and frightened as the last dominated generation dies off. The new churches in America are simply entertainment arms of the republican and bigoted tell congregations what they want to hear in order to have them enslave themselves to the politics of "terror of change". Again this is more prevalent among the uneducated and the poverty stricken seeking eternal reward for suffering in this life and the rewards of the prosperity gospel. The remaining churches learned from their Islam cousins and now preach a gospel of hate and fear, as a far more powerful motivator than love and peace, a gospel of Jihad and Armageddon for the salvation of the faithful, a doctrine of superiority both moral and theological, a doctrine of the right (in all Senses of the word) to promised conquest for the good of all. Education about, knowledge of and exposure of religion is and will continue to be the downfall of religion, watch just how much education for all but the most privileged is being squeezed, dominated and censored to combat exactly this. "God" that is, the places and organisations of religion, like political parties love them a dumbed down population of eejets

Depends how you define a crime, and what you class as a crime. Almost any action can be made illegal but does that make it a criminal action or was it always a criminal action that has now become illegal? Some actions are socially unconscionable but are not criminal, or are when done by a human but are not when done by an animal. I personally I believe a crime to be an action that cries out for justice because it has damaged the well being of one or more others **intentionally**

Amazing really, Harold Lloyd lost half of one of his hands in a stunt gone wrong, Buster Keaton broke his neck..twice, both Stan and Olly were badly injured, Chaplin broke almost every bone in his body at one time or another and working on the silent film version of Noah's ark three extras reportedly drowned, one extra had his leg amputated, and over a dozen others, including the film’s major stars, had to endure broken bones, missing toenails, and pneumonia, among other consequences when director Michael Curtiz decided to pour 15,000 tons of water over the extras and sets as the cameras rolled for the sake of realism. But it is not something of the distant past, Brandon Lee was shot and killed on the set of "The Crow" when the props department loaded the gun with real bullets, John Candy died of a heart attack in 1994, filming his final scene in "Wagons East." Vic Morrow and two child actors were killed in an on-set accident in 1982 while filming "Twilight Zone - The Movie, unbelievably director John Landis used a real vintage helicopter on a sound stage and it crashed on top of the three of them. even more unbelievably the story stayed in the final film with a slightly altered ending.
Pakistan, the worst country in the world for an atheist.
LenHazell53 comments on Nov 1, 2018:
Only last night on the new it was being reported how a Pakistani Christian woman held in solitary confinement on death row for eight years in Pakistan had her conviction for blasphemy quashed by an appeal judge. (The blasphemy was apparently drinking from a water source designated for use by Muslim men only) The result a mass protest by Muslim men demanding that she be lynched and the judge be stripped of his position and hanged too. How can you reason with a public attitude whose answer to everything is to cry blasphemy and slaughter anyone who disagrees with you? I know many people of Pakistani heritage third and fourth generation English, who insist this attitude is precisely why their forefathers left Pakistan, and yet they despair to see their own children (especially boys unfortunately) reverting to these barbarous ways thanks to talking with people in Pakistan on the internet who tell them they have grown westernised, soft and blasphemous and should readapt to the “true” path to manhood of sexism, racism and religious intolerance.

Fascinating word, I could not quite understand its etymology at first and I assumed it was something to do with cutting up legislation or not paying you accounts. Not the case as it turns out, it is a much older form of the word bill, meaning an axe or pruning hook, considered in battle as the type of weapon that needed no skill or aptitude, to use. Scissor in it's earliest sense simply means to split (in the same way a cutting tooth is an incisor, so a scissorbill is some one so incompetent they cannot use an axe without breaking it. Thanks for piquing my curiosity.

LenHazell53 comments on Oct 29, 2018:
I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan, I make a point of reading The Hound of the Baskervilles at least once a year, as it is probably **the** definitive Gothic thriller and archetype detective novel. Elementary was a good series and would probably have fared better had it not been released along side Sherlock, the comparison was inevitable and against Benedict Cucumberpatch he was not going to win out. The stories are great and using Gregson as the main foil especially as played by Aidan Quinn is a good choice. Lucy Liu is remarkable as Watson, her take on the character is spot on (Watson was suffering PTSD in the original books, though of course that was not the term for it at the time), her guilt ridden stress captures this perfectly. Though James Mason is still my favourite Watson Liu's version certainly ranks in my top five. It is ironic that the beloved flaws (drug addiction, antisocial behaviour, arrogance) of Holmes were written in to the stories by Doyle in order to kill the popularity of the character, as Doyle saw him and the demand for stories about as a distraction from his serious works. It backfired and the trope of the flawed superman was born, had he left Holmes as the near perfect mental and physical specimen of A Study in Scarlett the readership would soon of grown bored of him. This is what has made him a major influence on society, media and individuals for over a century now.

He shrugged, said it made sense and never asked again. I grant you my son may be the exception, this is the same kid who was asking me if the amount the water went up in bath when he got in was the same as the space he took up when he was four, and told me he was an atheist at eight, because god was another made up thing like santa and the tooth fairy to bribe people in to behaving in a certain way.

Has no one ever prosecuted this brain dead moron with a suit of frivolous litigation?

Daniel Day-Lewis is my all-time favorite actor, these are my two favorites of his.

Arguing with a religious person is like trying to play chess with a chicken. It will kick over the pieces, shit on the board and then strut around as if it has won anyway.
As a survivor of multiple traumas, MeToo is profoundly important to me.

Upholding the principle of innocent until proven guilty is a slap in the face to no one, it is the very foundation of a just and fair legal system. Trial by media is an affront to civilisation which ever direction it leans and is basically mob rule. A false accuser is a guilt of injustice as a perpetrator, this why we have laws in the west that apply regardless of gender, age, religion or race (granted more so in one country than another) If anyone demands justice and is told they are just whining, that accuser is the one in the wrong not the law and not the person demanding fair treatment by it.
