What does Nietzsche mean by “eternal recurrence”?
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 15, 2020:
Nietzsche himself did not mean anything by it, he simply commented upon the concept as expressed in Indian and Egyptian philosophy and theology. Eternal recurrence is a form of explanation for possible predestination especially in the the cosmology of the Zoroastrian religion, upon which much of "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" is based. The idea that the universe repeats itself over and over again, whether it be as a great circle or an Ouroboros serpent forever consuming its own tale is a very old idea, and has served as a basis for my science fiction stories, notably the 1990's TV series Lexx. Wherein the apocalypse of the entire universe is prophesied by a seer, not foreseeing the future, but by recalling in dreams the repetition of the distant past. Visions of the last cycle which they call the inevitable repetition of the future-past.

Expanding the Supreme Court does not make a lot of sense to me.
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 13, 2020:
Your whole system for appointing the supreme court Justice is totally screwed up. In the UK Justices who serve on the supreme court of either the UK or Scotland are appointed on merit and reputation by a panel of none partisan legal experts who make a recommendation to the Queen who symbolically makes the appointment. Applicants must have been a qualified legal professional for 15 years, a high court judge for at least 2 years (in effect meaning they must be over forty five) with an unblemished reputation. They must have no upheld complaints against them or have had no judgment overturned as biased or unjust. They have a mandatory retirement age of 70 (in effect meaning no one Justice can serve for more than 25 years), but can be fired or asked to step down for malpractice, mental incompetence, ill health or negligence. They can also resign if they wish.

What does accountability mean to you?
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 12, 2020:
Accountability is accepting actions have consequences for which responsibly must be taken, and that the same is applicable to all people. Integrity is a balance between personal and social obligations for the ethical protection of both. Forgiveness is for personal peace of mind, but never forget and accept forgiveness does not excuse the offenders of accountability it simply negates the self destructive desires for revenge and allows the offended to be satisfied with justice. It is impossible in an organized society or even in a tribal situation to answer to no one. Even those who live outside of a society are still answerable for their actions which impact either directly or indirectly on any individuals or social groups there of.

Nietzsche on philosophy
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 8, 2020:
You are quoting from the much disputed 1968 translation by Walter Kaufmann of The Case of Wagner A Musicians' Problem. 1888. The passage is not even part of the essay it is taken from an *epilogue* to a *commentary* on The Case of Wagner A Musicians' Problem. Written some time later and refering back to his Introduction to the essay written at the same time as the epilogue. " *I have granted myself some small relief. It is not merely pure malice when I praise Bizet in this essay at the expense of Wagner. Interspersed with many jokes, I bring up a matter that is no joke.* " The passage Translates from German as ***Holiness—perhaps the last thing the people and women still get to see of higher values, the horizon of the ideal for all who are by nature myopic. But among philosophers this is, like every horizon, a mere case of lack of understanding, a sort of shutting the gate at the point where their world only begins—their danger, their ideal, their desideratum.— To say it more politely: la philosophie ne suffit pas au grand nombre. Il lui faut la sainteté.** Leaving the French quote at the end in the original language to highlight the subtlety Nietzsche intended. Kaufman however takes it upon himself to translate *la philosophie ne suffit pas au grand nombre. Il lui faut la sainteté.* as *"Philosophy is not suited for the masses. What they need is holiness.* ***Which is a freaking awful translation*** In reality a better translation is ** For many (people), philosophy is not enough. He needs holiness.** "He" in this case is the subject of the essay **Wagner** I hope this is of some help in understanding the words of the author ***In Context***

HOBBLEDEHOY- a clumsy youth. used often in 1830s

A very nasty history to this word. To Hobble or hobbling was to break the ankles of slaves by crushing to stop them from running away, but to leave them able to work. Hobble itself comes from Hob able meaning demon possessed or attacked and so afflicted with a crippling physical disfigurement

LenHazell53 comments on Oct 1, 2020:
Etymologically the word comes from the Latin word pervertere meaning to make a bad choice or literally to make a bad turn and technically still does. To use pervert to mean a sexual deviant is sheer laziness when one means sexual pervert To use pervert to mean an apostate is simply shortening religious pervert owing to context You can have a legal pervert an industrial pervert A moral pervert etc. Making the assumption that "Pervert" simply always means sexual deviant is a modern laxity.

Was there a time when it would have been necessary for the government of the UK to have to be *told* this about their ally in the "special relationship"? This is now the accepted image of the USA and the UK in the eyes of the world, a torture condoning, truth hating culture of corruption and journalistic suppression, does it not make you proud?

LenHazell53 comments on Sep 22, 2020:
Spinster which originally literally meant a spinner of yarn or wool (as single or widowed women of a certain age were no longer good for anything else in the eyes of society), came back in to fashion in the early Victorian period as a female equivalent to "confirmed bachelor" in other words as a euphemism for homosexual. Two respectable older unmarried ladies living together were spinster companions all decent and above board had nothing to fear from the wagging tongues of the dirty minded and so what if they shared a bed, it was cold at night.

Why do people believe in the devil when it’s obviously a myth?
LenHazell53 comments on Sep 21, 2020:
As a fictional creation the Devil is a far more interesting character than god or Jesus. In a literary sense his is the young underdog who stood up against his all powerful boss and not only survived, but remained unbroken "Better to rule in Hell than be a slave in Heaven" He refuses to capitulate, he refuses to surrender, he fights the odds and overcomes, he has the courage of his own convictions and charismatically leads an army of 33% of the angels who agree with him on a quest for freedom from the unfair and cruel rules of YHWH. The god that grants free will to beings and then forbid them to use it, that demands love by force, that enforces respect by fear, who kills on a genocidal level. He even offers Jesus a way out of the insane scapegoating sacrifice of god sacrificing himself, to himself, to appease himself, 3 times and is turned down. In short he is a far more believable and enticing character than either the maniac god of the OT or the wishy washy bastard of the NT. No wonder he is more popular and has appeared in more film and literature than his old boss.

Somewhere I saw a supposedly biblical story from the OT -- young David was being chased by King Saul...
LenHazell53 comments on Sep 20, 2020:
That story is not Biblical, it is Midrash. Also it is not complete, in the original young David questions god s to why he made Madmen, spiders and stinging wasps all thing David feels have no purpose and are at odd with the supposed wisdom of god. God gets pissed off at David, calls him a cheeky bastard and promises that one day Daviy boy will see why Wasps, spiders and nut jobs are all proof of HIS divine wisdom. Through various situations years later god arranges for David to be endangered and in fear of his life three times, the first time he escapes death by pretending to be mad, the second is the Spider story and the third is David gets stuck in Saul's tent while trying to rob the mad king Saul in his sleep and only gets away because the guard is stung by a wasp. Thus proving Spiders, wasps and loonies were created by god purely for the purpose of getting David out of sit com situations a few thousand years later that he god engineered in the first place and showing how "wise" the daft bugger was..
