Syncope noun the contraction of a word by omitting one or more sounds from the middle.
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 1, 2022:
The two meanings of the word have different etymologies Syn-The Greek for together and kope to cut, so literally to cut together for example cannot being shortened to can't The medical version comes from Latinised middle English/ Normandic French sincopin loss of regular heart beat rhythm (as in syncopation) The heart skipping a beat was thought to be the cause of fainting.

Here is a solution that might curb the gun freaks enthusiasm abolish all gun control, BUT impose a tax of $500 each on bullets, $1000 per annum licensing fee on each fire arm and force all gun owners to have third party and theft insurance on every weapon at $10,000 per annum just in case of "accidents" Further the penalty for being found to be in breech of any required payment is a mandatory 75 year prison sentence, with the option to take the death penalty instead.

Whereas most people, including George Bernard shaw in his magnificent "Saint Joan" contended Joan was burned for war crimes, treason or her role in the coronation of Charles VII of France, this is incorrect. Most history books state she was executed for heresy, which is technically true but not entirely accurate. Her actual crime and the excuse for her sentence to be executed by immolation (burning alive), a punishment reserved for only the worst of heretics, rather than strangulation and then public burning, the church sanctioned punishment for common heresy, was... *Cross Dressing* "an abomination against the will of the Lord and the Lore of the holy Bible." ***Deuteronomy 22:5 5 A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this.*** Joan refused to dress in female attire for the whole of her imprisonment and trial, and regardless of the many heroic pictures of her at the stake in a flowing gown, she was burned wearing her uniform Riding Britches, boots and shirt.

Further to this post from yesterday, it seems the actions of the Talibum are trend setting in the rest of the world as Iran Cracks Down On Female Beauty Salons, banning outright in the city of Mashhad the waxing of private parts, tattoos, piercing, injecting Botox, other cosmetic subdermal fillers, nail enhancements, eyelash extensions, “unconventional” dress code, and playing western music at the salons. Other women’s hairdresser unions have announced similar bans across the country as the emboldened old farts, threaten their way back to "Traditional" values, by arresting and imprisoning beauticians and hairdressers. However just to demonstrate "equality" men too are under fire in Mashhad for their grooming choices. Those fashions deemed “Homosexual” and “devil-worshipping” are also banned, along with tanning, tattoos, and plucked eyebrows; all deemed un-Islamic and illegal.

Moggy or Moggie is a northern term for a cat in the same way that a "Tom" is a slang term for a cat. In Victorian England a Tommy Atkins was a common or garden man (later a soldier, like Jack Tar for a Sailor), like wise a Maggie May was a common woman or a prostitute. Like wise among pedigree breeders a Queen Cat was a female cat and and Sire Cat was a male cat, this all seemed too posh for common street cats, so a male became a "Tom" (also a slang term for a man who solicits a prostitute's services) and a Female "Maggie" as in their human equivalents. Over time Tomcat became the official term for a male cat and "Oop North" a Maggie or Moggie became the name for any street cat, especially those who howled in the night for a mate.

I know a lot of people say Americanisms don't matter this day and age, but as a wise man once said "There is no such thing as American English, there is English and there are spelling mistakes" The Latin root honลrifica is spelled with a Macron ล to elongate the sound and so when translated in to English is ALWAYS translated as ou except (as usual) in the US because they tend to spell phonetically and misprounce the word as 'on-or instead of the favoured original french via Latin pronunciation 'On-urh Sadly it seems in this one case I have been mistaken and the OED on line now accepts the US spelling as correct too ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

The west generally judges a nation's international standing in light of its enemies. Putin is monster, always has been, a dictator in all but official proclamation. However had China attacked Russia, instead of Russia attacking Ukraine, the billions of dollars being funneled in to Ukraine would instead be going in to the coffers of avuncular Uncle Vlad, who would in the media of the west be undergoing a massive character make over. The West will ALWAYS pretended that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", until (again as in the school yard) that friend asks you to actually step in and fight along side of them, at which point the west will assure them "Hey I'll hold your coat, I'll lend you my knuckleduster, but that is where I draw the line old bean. Fight your own battles!" All capitalist cultures need a boogie man, a scapegoat on which to blame all the shit visited on "The People" by their corruption and pocket lining. It was the USSR, then it was the Terrorist Muslims, then it was the Iraqis, then immigrant terrorist Muslims, then Immigrants generally, then the LEFT, the woke Left, Socialists, then the far right (bit close to home that one) and so finally back round full circle to the Russians again (Nostalgia value) I sometimes wonder if at this time there is a little nominative determinism going on, if you wanted to create an eastern warlord what is a better name that mixing up the names of the only two eastern block villains most people in the west have heard of Dracula (***Vlad***islaus Tepes) and Grigori ilitch Ras***putin***, Alucard Mc Satan-Monk might have been a little too on the nose, so why not just ***Vlad Putin***

A frighteningly large minority of conformists who are too frightened to think for themselves, and would rather self abnegate all responsibility for their own lives to the one with the loudest voice. Such people's freedom can be bought for the price of the promise to give them someone to blame and oppress, a set of unbreakable rules and the right to act on their base instincts. For such freedoms this sort of people people will follow a charismatic war monger to hell and thank him or her for the privilege. If you hear someone in authority telling you "If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear" "Trust your leaders, they know what is best for you" "Might makes right" "The strong must lead, it is the natural order of things" "individuality is weakness conformity is strength" "Strength Through Unity, Unity Through Faith" "The "Will of The People" must prevail over the will of any number of people" "One Party, one country, one law and order will follow" "Freedom is not free, it must be imposed, and protected by force and subterfuge" "Truth is subjective" "Do not deliberately over educate yourself it will make you unhappy" "Know your place and be content with it." and other such sound bites, you are already lost.

When these period grip the public consciousness rules of reason and logic go out of the window and the world reverts to the doctrine of the school yard. *Might makes right Them and us Control of speech, behaviour, information and above all THOUGHT so if anyone dares stand up to you REMEMBER The guy with the biggest gang always wins* This is why Vlad (raspy) Putin HAD no choice but to try and give uppity Ukraine a bloody nose before it got in to a bigger gang than his own. Ukraine of course COULD have backed down and promised not to join the NATO gang and not got punched, but would have been called a chicken, would have lost face and basically would have felt they had to kick the shins of someone who "Took the piss" out of them. To carry the analogy to it's natural conclusion sooner or later there will be a big punch up, lots of people will get bloody and bruised but the two big gang leaders will be found hiding behind the bike shed sharing a crafty cigarette and deciding they are quite good mates after all. Possibly from the Latin *bis-alus* Bis meaning twice or twin and Alus meaning wing via Alar meaning fixed on the edge Possibly also related to Bevel a sloping fixed joint in masonry and carpentry requiring no bolt pin or nail, that wedges in to place and grows tighter with the application of pressure.
And all this time I thought it was a silly fashion statement.

Back in the 1980 I worked in Middlesbrough, which then boasted one of the first "Distressed" clothing stores (Psyche) it is still there today and is now part of a huge chain. A colleague of mine (Steven with a V) returned from his lunch with two pairs of Psyche distressed Jeans, that were clearly second hand, washed out and full of holes. He started showing on the first pair and boasting they had only cost him £75 (A fortune in 1984 for clothes) to much amazement and gasps from the rest of us. Not understanding our exasperation he pulled out the second pair of even more dilapidated rags and announced that these ones had cost him £90. I could not help but ask why the second pair were so much more expensive, and with no sense of irony at all he told me it was because the holes in the second pair were bigger! No wonder the Psyche company went from strength to strength so quickly, some people will by any old crap for a designer name.

The U.S. government authorised over 1,500 wars, attacks and raids on Indians, the most of any country in the world against its Indigenous people. By the close of the Indian Wars in the late 19th century, fewer than 238,000 Indigenous people remained, a sharp decline from the estimated 5 million to 15 million living in North America when Columbus arrived in 1492. It is estimated that during the initial Spanish conquest of the Americas up to eight million indigenous people died, primarily through the spread of Afro-Eurasian diseases, in a series of events that have been described as the first large-scale act of genocide of the modern era. How many Native Americans died on the General Winfield Scott Trail of Tears? According to estimates based on tribal and military records, approximately 100,000 Indigenous people were forced from their homes during the Trail of Tears, and some 15,000 died during their relocation. The lists of massacres, poisonings, deliberate infections and murders for land or profit goes on almost ad-nausium and yet even today the indigenous peoples of the US, Canada and Hawaii are denied any real or appropriate form of justice or recommence
All humanity in policing is gone.

I have no words, it looks like behaviour from 1930s Uniformed authoritarian thugs bullying those they consider lesser, in public, unafraid and unashamed Even in a time when such behaviour has become common place and horrifyingly regular, this case is nauseating

People who refer to those they consider inferior to themselves as "The People" do not consider themselves people but "Persons" Which when spoken by a judge is more than a little ironic, considering that they spend their working lives locking away and executing "Persons of Interest"

What do the rethuglicans offer in return for your votes, she asks Well ( and this is just in my opinion) how about :- 1 Racist police 2 No gun control whatsoever 3 The myth of the "American dream" 4 HATE, lots and lots of hate 5 God hates everything religion 6 Cheap gas even if it means invading other countries to steal it AND 7 The return to an American golden age when every one was the "right" colour, spoke the "Right" language, had the "Right" sex/orientation, worshiped the "Right" god and political party, and had the "right" low level of eggukashun so as not to get confoozed by stoopid thigz (like rights and responsibilities) And those who were not and did not could be taken out and hanged publicly without fear of repercussions from "Liberal, pansy, pantie waists" and of course socialists. And you know what? It fucking works every four years between 49 and 50% of A'mirkins vote for exactly that, because that is what they fucking want Without political and educational reform the Gud Ole Useless Hay with be an openly fascist country before 2040
I'm a day late posting this.

An issued a statement saying that they believed that "all Ukrainian defenders of Snake Island may be alive" was released to the world press on this date by the Ukrainian government.
