The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion Jonathan Haidt (Author, ...

"Why do people so readily assume the worst about the motives of their fellow citizens?" Because experience tends to to teach everyone the hard lesson the hard way that most other people are a shower of bastards who will stab you in the back while smiling to your face. Therefore the safest default position is to assume the worst until proven otherwise. This is true across all cultures, because humans are inherently selfish, altruism appears as a genetic trait in time of crisis to preserve the species, but if it comes to saving the species or saving your personal genetic line, ME FIRST will always win out. Humanity has relied on this social superiority to survive and prosper, the rich need masses of poor to support them, self interest not altruism supports them in this, King, president, leader, priest, all titles because humans have children to support them in their old age, love binds them for survival not for any noble motive, being the dominator or the dominated is a way to survive. Hence class, or cast or "know your place!" This genetic and social conditioning is why communism always fails, we are not genetically prepositioned for equality. Either on a Macro or microcosmic level we need social inferiors first, superiors second and enemies third in order to make sense of life. Blessed is the pessimist for he shall never be disappointed, and will probably live quite a bit longer.

I'm assuming you mean the sort of situation where you meet someone, there is an immediate attraction and you cannot be in the same room together without ripping off all your clothes. The sort of relationship that is an intense fuckfest for a month or so, until you actually get so exhausted you start talking and then find that apart from sexual compatibility you have nothing in common and actually don't even like one another very much, the sex continues for a while but eventually even that fizzles out. That was pretty much my first marriage, six months of whahay followed by four and a half years of “ what the hell was I thinking? ” on both our parts.

One of my favourite stories about air travel is the case of a baptist minister on a plane to San Francisco, who spying a newly married gay couple sitting across the aisle and a few seats down, took umbridge. After the third time that one or the other of the happy couple kissed their partner before getting up for one reason or another, the good reverend gentleman could stand it no more. Approaching the couple he declared "Will you stop doing that! It is offensive and is upsetting your fellow passengers!" "Why?" he was asked. " Two folks of the same gender grouping kissing is not what god intended for our bodies, it is unnatural!" he blustered "You have noticed that we are flying?" came the smiling reply.

It's not a mistake it is simple economics. I,000,000 employees don't get half their pay for 4 days, that money sits in the bank for 4 days has 4 days interest added to the capital. Do this once every two month can increase profitability by 10% per annum. Another trick is to apply late payment charges to every customer, 50 percent notice and have their fee refunded but the company garners the interest, 50% don't notice and pay anyway, win win situation. Creative capitalism in action.

Generation and nationality enter in to it a lot. In some countries declaring your atheism is a death sentence, in others it will endanger your career and social standing. In some countries people could not care less. In my generation it is still something to be discussed and contended about all be it on a fairly civilised basis. My son however is an atheist, and sees no reason to justify it. Asked why are you an atheist I will reply because I see no reason or evidence to indicate a god exists He will reply Because I am an adult and I'm not a fucking idiot. Grow up. When I engage in dialogue with Theist he says I am wasting my time talking to morons, I don't agree, but he and his social circle simply don't consider religion worth talking about, assume that one another are non believers and don't let it enter in to their lives. I feel in the UK at least, in fifty years most of his and the next generation will all simply disregard relgion completly, it take longer among the Jewish and Islamic communities, but even now I see a lot of Muslim young people only going to Friday prayer to kep their father's off their backs and for a quiet life, once that older generation goes they will probably be completely Anglicised. Among the UK Jewish community many of the Youngsters treat being a Jew as being a member of a club and the amount of people calling themselves Jewish Atheists is amazing.

The floating sky daddy watching has never really controlled the moral compass of anyone over the age of 10, that is why from about the second or third century churches introduced church courts, then what became inquisitions, torture chambers, heretic burning etc. Religion when given the chance will always resort to being Hell on Earth, they know a thumb screw is far more effective than the threat of hell hereafter for discouraging irreligious behaviour.

Do you believe that Joseph Smith and the early Mormons, who were Masons, stole the temple ceremony ...
LenHazell53 comments on Jul 2, 2018:
Don't have to believe it, we know they did. When John C Bennett was excommunicated from the church and drive out of Nauvoo at gun point by Brigham Young, he wrote a number of exposés about the church including the fact that he sold the masonic ritual to Smith in order for him to set up the Rising Sun lodge in Nauvoo and proclaim himself Heliophant. The reason Bennett was in the USA was that the The Rectified Scottish Rite, also known as Order of Knights Beneficent of the Holy City, of freemasonry had placed a death sentence on him in Europe for selling their secrets their too. Smith's father, brothers, Uncle and other family member were all masons but belong to the lass esoteric branch known as the Scottish Rite and the York Rite was home to Sidney Rigdon and a few others. What is more extraordinary is that the temple ordinances were supposed to eternal rites, passed down from the time of Eden, perfect and unchangeable, except for the changes made in 1842, and 1843, which corrected early misinterpretations and so restored the perfect form as intended by God. Except for the the mistakes rectified in 1877 and 1893, and those in 1904, 1906, 1919, 1923, 1927 and 1936. allowing the Endowments to be given in languages other than English began in 1945 but absolutely no further changes were made.... until 1960, and 1975 and 1978, but that was it for definite, it was the perfect god given ritual, that was never to be deviated from ever again .... Until seven major changes were made in the 1990s leading to a mass apostasy of those who felt this shit was getting beyond a joke. Further changes did happen in 2005 and 2008 but that is it, definitely, no more ever, it is the perfect ceremony now, with no touchy feely stuff, no nudity, death threats and blood oaths or the promise to kill the murderers of Joseph smith if you ever happen to come across them. JUST good wholesome covenants with god, in silly bakers suits, with green aprons and weird handshakes. What more is wanted?

The message was getting through to a lot of active members until 2 years ago the SSC threw the desperate ones a life line (one made of razor wire, but a life line nonetheless) A new edition of the Pearl of Great Price was published, in which the introduction to the BOA was rewritten, now claiming that Holy Joe did NOT directly translate the book of Abraham from the papyri, but made an *INSPIRED* translation, simply using the Egyptian funeral texts to channel the book. This is of course a lie. The church even has Joseph'smyth's translation lexicon, written by himself while translating and giving the meaning of each individual hieroglyph (some of which translate to a whole paragraph of bad English). But this is now the official line of the church. It has even been rumoured lately that the POGP is actually going the same way as the journal of discourses, it being so embarrassing, it is being used and referred to less and less in preparation for it's removal from the standard works in the next few years and relegation to historical curiosity.

Should we genetically modify our species?
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 27, 2018:
NO. "Modification" either means to improve or control, in either case it is a totally subjective decision made by and subject to an opinion. Our genetic make up is the result of millions of years of evolution with no aim other than the continued objective aim of survival of the species. To think we could interfere with that, other than to cure genetic faults and diseases on a specific case by case basis, is the height of arrogance and dangerous stupidity. If you cannot see the potential dangers of mass genetic engineering you have no imagination.

It is typical trait of nationalism to call back to a "Golden age" that either never existed at all (The court of Camelot)or a gross inaccurate exaggeration through "Rose Tinted Glasses" of an actual era (Victorian Values and Morality) Every state in the USA seems to have their own version of this, so a vague statement like "Make America Great Again" can basically mean whatever the listener wants it to mean, with all those around them agreeing vehemently while having no idea what is actually going on in the other person's head and what they are in agreement with..
Epiphanies

I dislike the word epiphany, it has too many religious connotations, I prefer Inspiration
How would you describe karma and it’s effects on people?
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 26, 2018:
Social version of Newton's third law? Be an arsehole people will treat you like an arsehole, be friendly you will likely make friends, be miserable and people will keep away from you, result you'll be lonely and even more miserable.
What is a horror movie that you watched when you were a kid that totally destroyed you?
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 26, 2018:
Witch finder General 1968 Possibly the most effective and disturbing horror film ever made, the Masterpiece of the tragically short career of Michael Reeves and the joint best performance ever by Vincent Price equaled only by his performance in Dragonwyck. The film haunted me for years, especially its utterly devastating ending.
Is fate a thing?

Thinking about the end of life, do we get dispersed throughout the galaxy as energy?
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 26, 2018:
Neither, you die, you rot, nature recycles you. That's pretty wonderful and as near to imortality as any of us are ever going to get.
This is comparable to the best "evidence" of god ever found.

Do you love the 80's Action Movies?
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 25, 2018:
My guilty pleasures from that era are the early straight to video sci-fi action movies produced by Charles Band and mostly scripted by Bilson and Demeo Zone Troopers, Eliminators, Trancers etc.
Do you think Christians should revise their Holy book?
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 25, 2018:
Nope, editing would only legitimise the filth. They should be confronted with the evil they are tacitly supporting, and made to face the consequences of affiliating themselves with the disgraceful and frankly excremental doctrines of their chosen "Club House" or given the choice of disassociating themselves. They have gotten away with this ... The bible says... but not all Christians believe The Quran says... but not all Muslims believe The Torah says... but most Jews most certainly do not believe ...CRAP for too long, you venerate the book, you ARE responsible for the doctrines espoused, you hold up a turd and call it scripture, don't be surprised when people tell you you stink of shit. If you don't believe it, drop it, walk away and join the the chorus of disapproval, have the courage of your convictions, NOT the whine of a wheedling, snivelling little apologist worm.
Religous beliefs

I tell them I don't have any. If they ask why not, I say it is because I am an adult and grew out of the need for an imaginary friend when I started infant school.

Newton's third law is: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This applies in society and psychology as it does in physics. You push a bloody stupid radical agenda hard enough, you will not get a reasoned debate and logical argument in return, you will get and equally bloody stupid knee jerk reactionary agenda. Radicalised idiots love to fight among themselves and don't really care who pays the collateral damage.

I just watched a movie called Delirium with Topher Grace. It was...interesting...

And I said, "Why me?" And the Voice said: "Because you're on television, dummy! You have 40 million Americans listening to you and after the show you could have 50 million. For Pete's sake, I'm not asking you to walk the land in sackcloth and ashes preaching the Armageddon. You're on TV, man." So I thought about it for a moment, and then I said, "Ok." How many enjoyed this movie? I did it was well done during its time.

LenHazell53 comments on Jun 24, 2018:
If Jesus were alive, the government would be calling him a liberal lefty loon, Fox would be calling him a dangerous extremist democrat, the churches and other religions would be calling him a fake, he would likely be in jail for insurrection and hate speech, feminists would be saying he was the wrong sex and had always been a woman if you read the bible in a certain way, and if it had not been done already some one would be trying to assassinate him.
Have you noticed a decline in writing skills?
