@FrayedBear It was mentioned today at lunchtime on the Politics Today programme, (not the News programme that preceded it.) the story being that Russian authorities radioed the Defender saying they were about to enter Russian territorial waters, to which the Defender replied that they did not recognise Russian authority in the area, but were outside and intended to remain outside of the 12 mile limit. The Russian then threatened to fire on them if they deviate from their course. The official line is "Britain, strongly supported by Ukraine, insists that HMS Defender was taking the shortest, most direct route across the Black Sea, from Odessa, in Ukraine, to Georgia." There was then film of two Russian reconnaissance planes buzzing the ship, and very distant gunfire which the captain of the ship showed notification of as inland manoeuvres they had been warned about two weeks in advance. The Defender then continued on its preapproved course. Apparently after this the Russian media announced they had chased a UK Battle ship out of their territory and the UK denied this with Boris going on TV to bluster pointlessly as usual.

This is pure sabre rattling and power preening, it is also only going to make people think the USA have something to hide if they are so desperate to silence their "enemies". When China firewalled out all American (and UK and European) sites in the 1990s, the screams of indignation from the USA were loud and vociferous as the peoples republic declared the USA "dedicated enemies " and were forced to cease and desist with the threat of trade sanctions and so forth, if internet access to and for China was not restored for the purposes of money making. Believing that words have meaning is merely to make a god out of inherited human culture, which is why they so often fail.* ***So, in short you mean "Words have meanings" semantic, semiotic, etymological, lexicographical and lexicographical*** ***Come on you're better than simple equivocations *** *Words are at best, poor second hand tools, ill suited to the purpose to which they are used, using them to model reality being like, trying to build a butterfly out of house bricks. * ***Yes I have read and can paraphrase the science of discworld too*** *And the myth that they have wisdom and meaning, built into them, is no better than the belief that there is wisdom and meaning imparted to us by a literal god though holy books.* ***I never said that and you know it, meaning and wisdom are expressed by words, when they are used as tools to model reality, they are the common frame of reference that allow the sharing of wisdom and meaning. Therefore using the incorrect words or using words incorrectly is a way to royally screw things up. *** As I said you are better than this

A "Deep Lead" mine is often an alluvial deposit of gold or tin buried below a considerable thickness of soil or rock. Both substances were likely to have claim jumpers, or simply bandits descending upon you weapons drawn. So the claim would be made as mining "Deep Lead" since lead was common and worthless. Edit Lead is actually mined at comparatively shallow depths, whereas gold is mined as you say at deep levels, hence the term "Deep Lead", it was also used for opal mines.

@altschmerz She won the first time because of the novelty of her being a woman and the unpopularity of her predecessors (Edward Heath and Jim Callaghan) and by appealing to the burgeoning feminist movement, by putting forward the idea that if you were a woman and did not vote for her you were a traitor to your gender. Toward the end of her first term, she took a minor incident, the invasion of the Falkland Islands and using propaganda played it up as world war three. She sent a "task force" to claim back the Falklands, a little know south Atlantic group of Islands most people had never heard of that contained about 60 technically British citizens and a bout half a million "British" sheep. The invasion of the Falklands had been carried out as a publicity exercise by the dictator of Argentina, to demonstrate his strength as a leader. The Argentine force was made up of two battle ships bought from the British and the USA in the 1920s and 1930s and about 400 young boys from the Argentine army. Our task force was made up of an aircraft carrier, several battleships and three troop ships (one was the converted QE2) containing thousands of British troops and a nuclear submarine. The "war" lasted under three months and was a Victory, the major achievement of which was the sinking of the the Argentine antique war ship the "General Belgrano" (Formerly the USS Phoenix built in New Jersey in the 1930s) as it was running away. A UK British nuclear submarine decided that the floating museum piece was a credible threat to the "British Fleet" After a "glorious" victory over the "terrible" Argies, Thatcher rode the prestige of her hugely expensive war all the way to winning the election and became damn near untouchable as a "War" leader. This allowed her to proceed with her union bashing, labour busting and tax scamming project for the next few years of sheer hell for the people where the hardships suffered by the people where squarely dumped on to the shoulders of the "Ungrateful communist" trade unions who she mercilessly crushed with a mix of lies, dictatorial legislation and police brutality, that got her elected for the second time when she gerrymandered the electoral wards and regions to insure her victory. Her third victory was insured by wrecking the parliamentary labour party, engineering a split between the far left and the centrist factions, causing the labour party to change leadership five times in ten years, and having them go into the election lead by the welsh windbag Neil Kinnock, making them totally unelectable, having lost all of their most popular politicians to the newly formed Social democrat party, who went in to the election in an alliance with the Liberal party. This made Conservative victory inevitable all be it with a reduced ...

@Marionville yes sorry I get a bit passionate about the blessed Margaret. Your right of course, it was only after the 1984 Brighton bombing and the crippling of some of her own (31 seriously injured 5 dead) that the rest of the Tories finally realised she had not delivered three victories she had bought her election victories by making massive cuts in income tax, dropping the rate from 33.33% to 25% .and fooling Joe public in to thinking they were on their side, it took seven years but eventually they grew a spine and managed to get over the Falklands "war" myth of her being Churchill come back. People however still fell for the ruse, not noticing that she increased VAT from 7% to 17.5% and intended to raise it still further to 25%, and wanted to put 5% VAT on FOOD as well as the full rate on children's clothes, she also raised national insurance by stealth, and taxed "luxury" goods, like tampons at a higher rate, so that they take home pay may have been higher but was worth far less.

@altschmerz and not a moment too soon, her own party finally turned on her because she was proposing a raft of laws that would have turned the UK in to dictatorship and a Hell on earth. She was the first and only British leader to propose a tax on actually being alive in the UK, the so called poll tax, and this was enough to bring the county to near revolution, a revolution she proposed putting down by para military force as she had done with the striking miners. She was mad, in a vey true sense, an egomaniac, a megalomaniac, an ultra nationalist and an Oligarch, obsessed with the fact that she was the illegitimate grand daughter of the Lord Brownlow and believed herself a wronged aristocrat.

As was the film you seem to be basing your knowledge on who call him Akhnaton. The Ankh as a religious symbol dates from the Early Dynastic Period (3150 - 2613 BCE) and early examples can be found even earlier than that in the pre-dynastic period, during the twin goddesses of the upper and lower Nile Wadjet and Nekhbet, worship periods. This was at least 2000 years before the time of the 18th dynasty. If you are an honest scientist you ought to be more concerned with facts that with what "feels" appreciable

When Akhenaton was murdered by the priest of the old religion the cult of Aten was was banned and all the old gods returned, Tut-ankh-Amun ruled for a only a short time before himself being killed and the 18th dynasty brought to an end.

Michael Curtiz' film The Egyptian is loosely based on a novel by Finish author Mika Waltari and is a VERY loose retelling of the Amarna heresy of Akhenaton. Mr Waltari was not an Egyptologist, nor was he a very good writer, Hollywood even less less well versed mixed up the name Ak-hen-Aton meaning servant of the Sun the word Ankh (life) and based their whole silly story around this mistake. In reality Akhenaton banned the use of All Symbols of the ancient gods, replacing them with worship of the monotheistic great Aten or Aton the sun disk including the Ankh which was thought to be highly heretical and far too sexual.

The "Ankh" is not representative of the sun at all, there are two ancient Egyptian symbols that do mean that, the "Aten"(fig 2) and the "disc"(fig 1) The word ankh means the key of life, it is the ultimate fertility symbol being made up of a stylised penis and testicles coming forth from a vagina, it is therefore wielded by the priests and the gods to bring forth abundance and is often used in both hieratic and hieroglyphic writing as the symbol for the word "life" (fig 3 Anubis holds the key to life and death) This is why the early Christians stole it, to replace the Ichthys Icthus symbol (fig 4) which was too obviously related to the vesica pisces and ancient symbol for the womb and the vagina, symbolising birth and rebirth (fig 5) flattened out the top to make it purely a symbol of phallic worship more related to the ethos of the male dominated church.(fig 6)

HAEC ENIM EST UNA VIRTUS NON SOLUM MAXIMA SED ETIAM MATER VIRTUTUM OMNIUM RELIQUARUM.” _Cicero, Marcus Tillius. _ “After all, honoured judges, while I wish to be credited with every virtue, there are none which I can esteem more highly than that of being seen to be grateful. For this one virtue is not only the most esteemed virtue, but is also in effect perceived as the Mother of all the others.” *my translation*
