LenHazell53 comments on Apr 26, 2020:
In time, especially with many young Muslims growing up in other cultures, Islam will go the same way as every other religion and die a slow death from indifference, expedience and logic. The elderly keep religion alive and their children conform to please them and for peace, as the elderly die off so does their influence. This is why some see radicalisation as so important to "keep the faith" mad Imam's, Gospel preachers, scriptural literalism, Hindi fanatics, even Buddhist leaders advocating violence are all the result of the death scream of religion, a final act of insane defiance at the waning of their influence: If you cannot have love, have respect, if not respect then fear must suffice and the best way to combat fear is a solid mix of knowledge and laughter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAftULTyXGg

Yes but it has to be managed properly, a few years ago when a seaweed biofuel was developed the seaweed beds of coastal America were devastated and the EPA had to step in to prevent an environmental disaster. The same is likely to happen here if the the inventors or manufacturers are not ethical.

Many Atheists hold grudges against religious people and have preconceived notions of them.
LenHazell53 comments on Apr 24, 2020:
I hate religion, for what it does to people and society. Christians and other religious persons, I judge on what they practice, which in the case of some is nothing more than calling themselves a Christian or whatever. However when someone will openly profess to allow that their religion shapes their opinions, makes them hate who they are supposed to hate, when they put home and family second to their religion, when they will turn their back on their own over a difference of opinion, when they shun those who have done them no harm and believe those people will be sent to ever lasting torment because the deity they believe in thinks they deserve it and they have not the courage to disagree for fear of the same punishment and yet still profess love for that monster of a god; I will openly tell them they are wrong, they are as monstrous as their god and that they invite the loathing of all decent people.

How many of you feel religion negatively impacted your formative years?
LenHazell53 comments on Apr 22, 2020:
Yes, my mother's insane religious mania and my father's decision to simply ignore it lead to a miserable and damaging childhood, that left me with life long problems, psychological and physical, a disassociation with social norms and behaviours, a ludicrous and unfounded hatred of Roman Catholics and a terror of god that haunted me in to my late twenties. Religion wrecked my formative years, destroyed my brother turning him to an alcoholic by his mid teens and worse later, it poisoned our minds and wrecked our ability to have healthy relationships. The day I realised that I was an atheist and that religion no longer held any sway over me, I felt like I had been set free from a dark, dungeon could finally see the sun and know what it was to breathe easy without the stench of fear in my every breath.

LenHazell53 comments on Apr 20, 2020:
It is a mistake to assume religion deals in right and wrong, or good and evil or even morality and ethics, they do not. Religion deals in Sin and Virtue, based solely on what their particular cult deems to be the preference of that particular deity at that particular time. This is extremely useful, especially at times of war, or social rebellion. For example if you want your flock to be in fear and crippled by guilt you find something completely natural and harmless that almost everyone does everyday and declare it a sin in the eyes of god. This immediately has a number of effects 1) It sets up an unpaid virtue police of people so determined to prove they are not sinning they will report those who they think (or want to think) are. 2) the guilt ridden will confess and leave themselves open to black mail if they do not atone 3) People will pay for forgiveness. 4) An appropriate punishment can be set, so instilling fear and obedience. 5) A virtuous hierarchy can seize power on deserved merit. 6) Natural disasters can be blamed on the sinners. This why most new religions immediately have a list of prohibitions for perfectly natural thing such as tea, coffee, pork, beef, homosexuality, masturbation, premarital sex, dancing or even chocolate. Conversely utterly horrendous things can be made to be virtuous and pleasing to god such as aversion therapy, forced purchase of religious items such as e-meters, mass suicide, prosperity gospels, exploitation, hating people of another religious persuasion, invasions of promised lands and the genocide or enslavement of the people already living there and extermination camps. Religion has nothing to do with good and evil, right and wrong and morality in the pragmatic or ethical sense at all, as I said it is all about subjective Sin and Virtue.

Pascal's Wager = a straw man argument?
LenHazell53 comments on Apr 19, 2020:
Pascal's Wager could be seen as a straw man, but it is frankly so inept that is hardy qualifies as a logical fallacy at all. As pointed out it is based upon presupersition, but is also reliant upon the idea that it should only be applied to the Christian god, when in fact the premise works equally well for any god or deity offering an afterlife or Parousia as a reward for a "virtuous" or "Sin" free life. For Pascal's wager to work, one would have to accept the entire pantheon of deity, known and unknown, and pledge allegiance to all of them in the hope of being forgiven by the right one for your eclectic fidelity and rewarded accordingly.

This word is very old and dates from Chaucer. It is a mix of the phrase choke-full, meaning eating so much you might choke on you own vomit, and a navel term for a block and tackle used for hauling up sails. In the 14th century a new form of "block and tackle" was invented using three or four pullies instead of one held in close proximity (called a block) literally halving the work load, this device also included a locking pin known as a choke, (because it was jammed in to a hole) that meant the rope (or sheet) did not have to be tied off, see @TheGreatShadow 's post above). known colloquially as a choke-a-block it revolutionize sailing.

"Good Will Hunting" The name says it all, this movie went hunting for good will by being the most pretentious movie of 1997. So much so that it's writers/stars even parodied it themselves in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back 2001 by portraying a fictional sequel "Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnESedN4vSI
Why is the Satanic Temple officially recognised as a tax-exempt religious organisation.
LenHazell53 comments on Apr 17, 2020:
The Satanic Temple is tax exempt because it is a recognized and registered charity, not because it is a religion. They don't worship anyone or anything and are in fact an agnostic organization that campaigns against the damage done to people and society by religion and literal bible teachings. They help in cult recovery and such like, campaign for equal and human rights. It is NOT to be confused with the Church of Satan or the First Satanic Church

There is a theory that the semi precious stone was named for the poisonous plant the *sardonion* literally meaning the plant from Sardinia, which famously caused horrendous muscle contractions in the face giving the victim a wide eyes huge smile (Think Joker Venom) before killing them and leaving them with a fixed evil looking grinning corpse. So sardonyx is onyx of Sardinia because it appears to have convulsed in to smile lines. This is also the root of the word Sardonic to laugh scornfully or in mockery of someone else's misfortunes
