Apunzelle comments on Aug 24, 2020:
Responding as someone with an English degree who works as a copy editor. Firstly, this entire article is talking about *texting*. It doesn’t mention anywhere that people will change the way they write prose in other circumstances (I would take that to mean work reports, school essays, and ...

In the comments, you may see that this is not just about texting, it is expanding out into everyday life, that HR departments are having to contact management to tell them correct English in official memos is upsetting and even intimidating to younger staff, because they EXPECT the same use of punctuation as in texts. Such pandering to ignorance is NOT evolution of the language it is a deliberate degradation of standards.

@Cutiebeauty You think so? I see no difference in writing a post and writing a letter, for the most part I take equal care over both. However since I have suffered from dyslexia all of my life, I do perhaps value the written word more than most, I feel careful, comprehensible writing is a duty and consideration I owe to my correspondent (s)

Sadly no, I have even known people at a gathering SAY "Lol" after hearing a joke. And again no in response to this article a woman tells the story of how she as a HR officer was reprimanded for using a full stop in a works memo, because it upset younger employees who thought she was being rude to them.

@MarkiusMahamius "I can think of many reasons members would want to avoid personal replies/harassment " This is a discussion site, discussion implies conversation, if you do not want personal replies then you do not want conversation you at best want to "Talk at" people, at worst you want to preach. That amounts to the same thing I said earlier you are frightened of it being pointed out that you are indulging in Cowardice, bigotry or shame. The same way people do when they create sock puppet accounts. Personal I have no time for such childish stupidity and bullshit, however should one wish to luxuriate in scatalogical undulation, feel free.

Scat in musical and poetic terms does not come from the Greek skatos, it comes from Latin Scansio and Tempus specifically as in scantion the implementation of poetic or rhythmic metre to a specific time signature. Since scat singing uses no words just sounds, the scantion and tempo are all important hence SCA (ntion) T (empo)

LenHazell53 replies on Aug 12, 2020:
@Cutiebeauty Yes that is my point, this Victorian idea of the manly man is a total myth and attacking it by feminising is utter bollocks. I am secure enough in my sexuality to ignore idiots who think calling me a Poof or such like is an insult, since more than half of my heroes and role models from history were homosexual or women or both. I grew up with a Father to whom the idea of my becoming an actor or writer or musician was a sure sign that I was a "filthy gayboy" yet who when I asked him what I should be suggested that I be a wrestler or a boxer or a footballer, and was shocked when I pointed out that he wanted me to spend time grabbing on to near naked men, or running about with men in shorts who I would then bathe naked with, to prove I was a "real" man. I saw through this projection and hypocrisy very quickly, and soon realised those who insist on finding feminine traits in other men or masculine traits in women ARE LOOKING FOR THEM. Personally I accept people for who they are if they are honest and so long as they are not hurtful or abusive to others, they are free to be who they want to be without comment or judgement from me or anyone else. Use of belittling words like **Snivelling** are not attacks on my masculinity, they are attacks on my maturity, there is nothing gender specific about them, certainly nothing sexist. They are the mocking of age related inappropriate reactions and a lack of self reliance.

THis happened in 1992 too, when Disney tried to copyright the Name Aladin to differentiate it from the public domain story Alahdin/Alladdin/Aladin/Haladin/ or as it was originally a pun on *A La di* and the magic Lamp. When it is known that the original tale was a very racist anti-chinese story written by a Christian missionary priest named named Dionysios Shawish, alias Dom Denis Chavis in India in 1703 the name is revealed as a Chinese dirty joke meaning "Just had his first pull" combine that with rubbing a lamp and something amazing coming out and you get the picture. Disney sued UK pantomimes, other productions and films or TV versions of the story and basically made utter fools of themselves. It was eventually gotten around by Disney trademarking their own spelling of "Aladdin" which worked for a while until Webster's dictionary accepted the disney spelling as the correct one, thus rendering the word public domain again.

@Green_Chile_Type Four cities were the potential target, Tokyo was removed as it had already been firebombed and Truman wanted an undamaged city, to demonstrate his destructive power, Kyoto was personally forbidden by Truman as he and his wife had visited the city on their honeymoon and Mrs Truman objected, Kokura was then the chosen target but Truman was persuaded to send a last minute order to change to the port of Nagasaki under (false) the impression that the port was being used as an arsenal, which was ironic as Kokura did have an enormous weapons cache inside of the city. As for peace overtures, the first was made in 1943 by the Japanese once it became clear that the USSR would attack Japan after the defeat of the Germans. Hirohito incorrectly thought his people would face far less retribution from the Allies than he would from the soviets, having already been informed by the German ambassador to Japan that with the entry of the Russians in to the war on the allied side Hitler was finished, as his insistence on fighting a war on two fronts was utter folly. BY 1945 Japan was begging for peace, had already signed away their empire and offered unconditional surrender, but Truman wanted a show of strength, that would have the whole world terrified of the USA, and so ignored the Japanese until after August 9th bombing.

@Julie808 I left Mormonism many years ago, and have in the years since helped many people leave and or cope with the consequences of leaving. It is a truly evil cult and Mormon women are brainwashed from birth to seek only to snare and hold on to a man, because their eternal happiness depends on it, which is why in fringe mormon denominations and even in the mainstream church women are willing to accept polygamy so readily and accept the idea that in the hereafter they will have sister wives as a blessing. This is because a woman cannot enter the kingdom without a man, but a man cannot enter the kingdom without multiple wives. Actual polygamy has been outlawed in the LDS church since 1895, but widowed men are expected to remarry immediately to save another sweet sister. Female Mormons outnumber male mormons almost 4 to 1

@FrayedBear It's a funny story, but is utterly made up propaganda, used by those who attempted to defund NASA in the 1970s in order to divert funds elsewhere. Patrick J. Frawley had invented a pen with a collapsible vacuum sealed delivery cartridge in 1941 that delivered instantly drying ink via an airtight ball point nib, that he supplied to NASA throughout the 50's to the 80's and to the to this day for earth bound training and zero gravity flights, his company is called PaperMate. Paul C. Fisher, founder of Fisher Pen Company independently and without government funding made minor improvements and his model was the one actually used in space throughout the Mercury and apollo missions, Nasa only ever bought 600 of them and are still using them today, though most writing in space is now digital, done on computers transmitted and printed on earth. It is true the Russian used propelling pencils (with extra thick 3 or 4b graphite sticks, known as greasies, to avoid sapping), but never used actual wooden pencils as the shavings and ground graphite waste in zero gravity where a potential threat to instrumentation. As of the 1980s a few of Fisher's space pens were sold to The Soviet Union in bulk for use its Soyuz spaceflights, but today the Russians use a reverse engineered version of their own making when not typing on computers.

If advice is given and it must be compared with other alternatives using reason and logic, and if you are stupid you will choose a less efficient, less productive option for a purely selfish reason. If you are logical and reasonable you will choose the option with the most efficient outcome . The ONLY exceptions are when the most logical choice violates a legal requirement or when there is a moral consideration.

Then the kid who made the film was punished by the Mosque for disrespecting the teacher and shaming the mosque by exposing the abuse. Similar instances have been revealed at Hebrew classes and in Catholic Catechism tutorials since then. Religious people embracing the "Spare the rod spoil the child" interpretation of Proverbs 13:24 When this is being done on regular basis it is no wonder the kids of the devout grow up with a warped view of reality.

LenHazell53 replies on Aug 3, 2020:
@HippieChick58 In truth most derogatory terms for women were originally insults against the honour of men, but over time the male versions fell from fashion in favour of the more simple terms like Bastard and old fart. Slag is the feminine of Slaggard (A promiscuous man) for instance, Slut the feminine of Sluttage (A man of little or no taste in his company) and cow obviously of Bull (A rough and uncouth man) and Bullock (a younger version of the same), but also of Pillock meaning an infertile or metaphorically castrated male and of course Bitch being the feminine of hound ( meaning a man of no manners ) . Believe it or not there was a time when a man putting it about was considered unchivalrous, dishonourable and was punishable by law.
