QUOCKWODGER New one for me!
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 24, 2021:
A quockerwodger was a small wooden puppet controlled by two strings one above one below which made it dance in quick jerky movements The word comes from Quocker = Quick one (or possibly Cocker, a London expression for friend) Wod = Wode a warriors war paint, or simply Wooden and Ger= an old proto german word for warrior or spear carrier a quick (or friendly) painted (or wooden) warrior. The alternate meaning came in to being about 1851 for a puppet ruler.

Why would the UK send a warship into a dead end sea that only leads to provocation?
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 24, 2021:
Very little about this incident has been reported in the British MSM, couple of reports of the ship being tracked by Russian rada ships and a diplomatic row between the UK and and Russia, but that is about it. Going by past experience my guess would be, since BBC reporters don't as a rule get assigned to travel on RN Ships, that much more was expected to happen, but did not. The purpose was probably further demonizing of Russia to distract from the current Brexit fiasco, and a bit of saber rattling to the EU to point out "John Bull"'s navy is still up to giving a jolly good thrashing to those jumped uppity damn foreigners when it comes to Britannia still ruling the waves. Also a sign to Uncle Sam that we Brits still hate the tea poisoning Ruskies just as much as they do. (Funny how this happened within hours of JOBI leave the British shores.) Or else it was a distraction for something covert going on at the same time.
I'd have to put a Pomeranian in the back seat. How about you.

LenHazell53 comments on Jun 21, 2021:
Hello cousin
Why should the word "atheist" even exist?
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 21, 2021:
Because there are no special terms for people who **DO** believe in Santa Clause, or Bigfoot, or the Tooth Fairy. However Theists made a special naming exception for themselves, and since for all "that is" there must be the possibility of there being "that which is Not" for which the antonym naturally comes in to being.
Preposterous!
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 21, 2021:

Remember that this is a God who has a chosen people who he sent to war time and again against lesser races and then in to slavery, mocks his dead enemies, raped a teenage girl in order to have her carry his child who he would later sacrifice to himself, condemns lies and then lies endlessly and drowned the entire world because he could not get his own way and then killed the first born of an entire nation when they started breeding again. Sound to me that a "god" like that would be the very sort to send a leader like Trump and see him as good, or at least fun to watch as he visits suffering on everyone.

"Insuperable" seems to have disappeared from common usage in the UK.
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 16, 2021:
This is one of those weird ones Though surmountable (that which can be risen above) and superable (That which may be overcome) are synonyms of one another, their negatives are not Originally ***insuperable*** meant literally not able to get above, from the Latin super (Over or above) in meaning not. So a mountain is insuperable if it cannot be climbed. ***Insurmountable*** meant not able to be solved as in a problem could be insurmountable ***unsurmountable*** meant cannot be gotten over or recovered from, as in unsurmountable grief, or a terminal disease is unsurmountable While in most cases "in-" means Not incapable= not capable "Un-" means reversed Undone= returned to original state This lead in time to all three being used metaphorically for one another and eventually Insurmountable taking on all three meanings partly because of the confusion between the two etymologically distinct words Mounting the verb to mount (as in to mount a horse from Latin *montare* to prepare for exhibition) and Mountain (from *montem* Latin for a Hill)

Phil Collins appeared with the Beatles in their film Hard Days Night in 1964 (Collins was an actor before he was a drummer) and knew Ringo well as it was he who spotted young Collins in a west end production of "Oliver" playing the Artful Dodger, this lends some credence to the story, since Ringo definitely played on All Things Must Pass, despite George at the time being involved in a long running affair with Ringo's wife Maureen. Flaming Youth were not formed until 1969 by songwriters Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley, from a group of session musician who had been hired to act as backing band to John Walker of the Walker brothers on a UK tour. Flaming Youth had split up by early 1970 after Ark2 met with critical success but bombed financially. So Collins may well have been looking for work. George was known to be a practical joker and had a long running tit for tat prank battle with Eric Idle of Monty Python fame through out the 60's and 70's

It is not that most employers CANNOT AFFORD to pay a living wage, it is that they don't WANT to pay a living wage, because they want to maximise profits and treat themselves to a whole load of fringe benefits they can write off againt tax. When I was general manager of a construction company my directors philosophy was "no one is forcing people to work for minimum wage, if it was not enough for them, they would not be competing to have me pay it to them." This unfortunately is the out of touch attitude many employers have adopted happily in a capitalist society, that is reliant on a desperate work force.

Interesting, I thought at first that this must have a common root with "banal" which comes from the Proto Germanic Bannen meaning obligatory work, or legally required compulsory servitude Issued by degree or "Ban" However it apparently does not, but maybe related in a round about way Banausic comes from the Greek words banausos (derogatory term) an artisan or craftsman as opposed to an artist and baunos a forge worker and later simply manual or production worker of any kind
