Maybe the difference between Agnostic & Atheist is the same as "I don't know" vs. "I don't care"?

LenHazell53 comments on Nov 3, 2019:
Monotheism tends to emerge firstly as a unifying force, polytheist societies tend to be pretty tolerant of one another the Romans for instance believed that the Greek gods were the same gods as their own but with local names, the Egyptians would use several names for the same god depending on what city they happened to be in. However, if you can convince you population that there is only ONE God (capital G) and that he will be pissed at you if you don't kill or convert the followers of the False gods, you have a ready made army of fanatics willing to die for said god and be rewarded in heaven. Secondly monotheism tens to emerge in civilizations that are moving in to more advance states of being, especially capitalist economies. People start thinking that praying and paying to a dozen tributes to lots of gods for different things is stupid, time consuming and will settle for one weekly tithe to one almighty catch all deity. The first major society to go monotheistic was Egypt under Pharaoh Akhenaten in the so called "Amarna heresy" Of course it failed and the priest of the old polytheist religions not only killed him but tried to erase his dangerous ideas from history, because it cost them too much lost revenue and made the King far to rich and powerful, as all tributes were going directly to him. However many historian believe this was what inspired both the Zoroastrians (a new religion) and the Jews (previously polytheistic Israelites) to move toward and popularize Monotheistic dualism.

I do not disagree. That's not uncommon... Why do people use double negatives in common speech?
LenHazell53 comments on Nov 3, 2019:
Technically the examples you have given are not actual double negatives they are journalistic/political equivocations "I do not disagree." does not mean "I agree" it is a weasel word way of say "I neither agree nor disagree," "That's not uncommon" does not mean "That is common" it is a way of hinting "something is happening regularly by not every day" For example a full moon is not a common occurrence, but it not an every day occurrence either, it is not uncommon." A true double negative is slightly different and is grammatically incorrect and usually contains at least one contraction. "I didn't do nothing" for example means "I did something" but gives the impression of meaning "I did nothing" "I won't use no double negatives" means "I will use double double negatives" while sounding like it should mean "I will not use any double negatives" Perhaps the most famous one of all is the first line of the Pink Floyd song "The Wall" "We don't need no education"

Atheist Ghosts?
LenHazell53 comments on Nov 2, 2019:
The one theory of ghosts that I am willing to consider as a possibility is that which was first advanced by the Victorian parapsychology pioneer Elliot O'Donald that some times buildings can absorb images and or sounds of traumatic events and play them back to other people who have a predisposition to receive them. Since it has been proven by the invention of recording devices that this phenomena can be done using electrical impulses the idea that their may be a naturally occurring version is not totally illogical. Nigel Kneale made this idea the basis of his extraordinary science fiction drama "The Stone Tapes" in 1972

Sorry but that is not a theory, it is barely a hypothesis. It is by the very nature of its wording untestable, pointless and without relevance. Even if you could produce some evidence of such a being it would not by any tradition sense be a god and it's position in reality would make it as irrelevant as a deity that did not exist at all. What is the point of such a belief, I don't even see how it could work as a comforter?

LenHazell53 comments on Nov 2, 2019:
They only usually say this after they have no more arguments and are threatening to have their god step in and forcibly change my mind, so I ask why it was five minutes ago they were all for free will and want god to brainwash me. At this point they will say no, that's not it, so I ask just what they are praying for me for? They never have an answer. Or I ask does anything happen that is not in gods plan when they inevitably say no, I point out god then must want me to be an atheist and is it not presumptuous to disagree with god. On the one occasion when some one said yes, I gleefully followed up with pointing out that god was therefore not all powerful in their opinion and that saying such was blasphemy
I read somewhere that atheism is not a religion.
LenHazell53 comments on Nov 2, 2019:
"I must respectfully disagree." one of those wondrous phrases on a par with "with all due respect" and "I'm not racist but..." You can almost guarantee the person saying it is about to be totally disrespectful based on spurious reasoning and and ill informed nonsense. I do NOT have faith that there is/are no god(s) I simple have no evidence to justify my believing in it or them, because no evidence exists. Therefore I adopt the default position that the contention that there are deities has not meet the burden of proof and so can be disregarded until such time as it does. Faith in the religious sense is the answer given by desperate religious people when there is no evidence reason or logic for holding a belief, it is irrational and stupid to do so, but is given undue tolerance and respect based on hundreds of years of social indoctrination by religion. I don't ask for evidence of the non existence of pixies, why should I need evidence for the non existence of deity.

You might as well say ***"I know the Harry Potter books are fiction, so no I don't believe in them, BUT there was a character called Harry Potter in the 1986 movie Troll, and that did have a very similar plot to Chamber of secrets, so maybe there is something in this magic business after all, and by the way did you see the worst witch Hmmm? Utter twaddle. "There is more going on than we are fully aware of" That is self evident, but it does not in anyway connote supernatural or "spiritual" existence "But only the arrogant claim to know precisely what it is" there is a difference between actually knowing something and claiming you know it, it is in no way arrogant to share actual proven evidence based knowledge, it is truly arrogant to claim superior knowledge based on religion, feelings and revelation for which thee is no evidence but Faith. "And only the ignorant dismiss it without consideration" true, but to dismiss something after due consideration is a perfectly acceptable course of action if that due consideration reveals the contention to be utterly wrong, unprovable or without evidence. "There is no truth, only human opinion" sorry but that is utter shit. Of course there is truth, their are ""a priori" and "a posteriori" facts that are in no way opinions, there are yet to be falsified theories and mathematical models, there are axioms and provable past actions. Sown the path of "There is no truth, only human opinion" lays the dangerous destination of exploitation, lies, brainwashing and totalitarianism.

Hmmm it is my experience in theater and stand up women write better comedy than men however women as performers are more suited to straight roles (straight in the sense of not comedic) as they are more in touch with their emotions and less ashamed to express themselves. (eg Jennifer Saunders) Men are as comedians or comics far more willing to make a fool of themselves and appear stupid in public for the sake of laughter. (with obvious exceptions such as Patricia Routledge and Victoria Wood) HOWEVER in a comic role there is really no difference between the sexes so long as the writing is good and the material genuinely funny. It is very much about the preconceived ideas we as a society have of archetypes of the sexes at a subconscious level. The man as the warrior or lovable idiot, the woman as the great Mother protector to be respected or the sister to be loved in Platonic fashion and protected.

In many of the earlier myths that eventually evolved in to the Jewish creation story, the forbidden action, be it an apple, a box, jar, potion or whatever was simply a test, the object of the object was not the prize of the thing itself but the choice to exercise free will, to realize they were independent beings, alive and free in order to raise up to being an equal of the gods. The Adam and Eve myth completely inverted this and made the story of apotheosis in to one of a fall and a reason to blame women for all the evils of the world.

The word for hand in both Greek and Aramaic includes the wrist, but was translated simply as hand. It was long since recognized that the hands were not capable of holding the weight of a body, so artist took to painting the wrists as ties and the hands pierced. However in Latin the words are different and in the accounts of the followers of Spartacus and his followers it is clearly stated in the Roman history that they were nailed by the wrists and feet. But of course in the minds of medieval theologians the Bible could not be "wrong" so hands it had to be. Crucifixion was still being used as a method of execution as lates as the first world war and it was always wrists that were nailed. Hence when the Shroud of Turin was faked during the renaissance the the image is shown as having been nailed through the wrists, because in the 15th and 16th century this was how people were still being crucified.

Very nice.
How come some people on this site talk about worshipping the devil.
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 25, 2019:
Many Christians claim that not being a Christian means you are Satanic, and that non believers are only claiming to be atheist as (to them) there is no such thing as an atheist. Hence all atheist are devil worshipers since they are doing the devils work by drawing worship away from Christ. The technical term is "Bollocks"

Stephen Hawking famously said that "Philosophy is dead." What do you think?
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 25, 2019:
Hawking was speaking in the context of a search for physical truth and explanation at the Google's Zeitgeist conference scientists rather than philosophers have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge He said adding that in this sense ‘philosophy is dead’ That is not to say that there are a few areas where philosophy in the classical sense is still of use, metaphysics, ethics and a couple of others. especially critical thinking and logic.

Billy Connoly has a home in the highlands Scotland and tells the story of how he was presented with a Tam O'Shanter by a fan. He found it surprisingly warm and decided to use it as a fishing hat. One evening when out fishing a local man walked past, and in Billy's own words this man was wearing the bluest suit you ever saw, the bluest of blue colouring, the sort of blue that does not announced that it is mildly and pleasantly blue, but the sort of blue that grabs you by the throat and yells in spit speckled tones of violence in your face "BLUE!!!!" Attempting to not stare and to be pleasant to a neighbour Billy bid the man a good evening. With all th haughtiness of a true Scot, the man in blue sniffed derisively and glaring at the Tam O'Shanter said "If I had a hat like that, I would no wear it"

[] Will Trump shut down the government to fight impeachment?

His presidency has been the biggest networking operation in history, it does not matter to him now if he leave the Whitehouse under a cloud, in a coffin, or in a police van. Like Nixon before him he will be pardoned, will go back to his work of schmoozing and will enact all the deals his time as dickhead in chief have allowed him to set up all over the world. He will forever have the secret service to protect him, grateful rich friends and the right to sign himself president Trump on every business document he ever signs. He is a made man, as are his idiot elder sons, his smarmy son in law, his protege daughter and the other two who have the sense to keep their heads down.

My father in a life time of working very hard managed to raise himself from working class to lower middle class and in all that time always voted Tory and held very right wing views. I asked him why once and his answer stunned me "I vote for the people who understand money" I pointed out the people he voted for only understood two things about money, how to steal it and how to hold on to it. He nodded sagely and tapping his nose said "Exactly" as if this explained everything. He is a fine example of the mentality of the poor who feel that somehow granting the favour of a vote to his "betters" will some how oblige them to look after him. He hates socialism but demands his old age pension as a right, his free NHS medicine, eye care and dentistry and will not believe that they did not come from "Mr. Churchill" winning "the war" which they did not, our health service and welfare state are all products of socialism. This is the problem with many of the "Greatest generation" they are convinced that people should know their place, be grateful for scraps, and worship the upper classes as benevolent god who they hope will smile upon them, pat them on the head and tell them what good boys and girls they are.

Anyone here think that consciousness is a fundamental entity that exists both inside and outside ...
LenHazell53 comments on Oct 23, 2019:
It is possible that the universe has some form of consciousness, not one that we would recognize as comparably akin to our own thought processes, more likely to be similar to an amorphous entity such as an amoeba. However consciousness as a fundamental entity that exists both inside and outside brains is a concept I find unlikely. Consciousness is a result of active thought and is simply a descriptor to differentiate waking and sleeping, or active and passive states of brain function. It is purely a set of internal chemical and electrical functions of the brain.
