I saw Chris De Burgh at Middlesbrough Town Hall in 1977, there were 14 of us in the audience almost no one else had a clue who he was. I had just bought "Spanish Train and Other Stories" I had discovered him in 1974 on Radio Luxemburgh and introduced his music to my friend Robert. One song in Chris beckoned us all down to sit in the front row and played the whole concert straight to us. He did an amazing live version of Don't pay the Ferry man which would not make it on to an album for another five years. When Lady in Red came out in 86, I'll admit to feeling he had copped out a bit as it is not his usual style and is hugely musically influenced by Eric Clapton's "wonderful tonight" I 've come to appreciate it more in time but I'd recommend anyone to listen to tracks like Just Another Poor Boy, Don't pay the ferryman, Waiting for the Hurricane and I love the night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xuOaeRv_us

If they were fighting over political ideologies people would be in no doubt, but once again "religion" claims special exceptionalism because...er...GOD!

Who was the most prolific UK serial killer of all time until the turn of the century? Not anyone you ever heard of. HER name was Mary Ann Cotton and she killed at least 21 people before she was arrested including her husbands (plural) her son and many of the children she was hired to care for. She was known by the epithet "The Baby Farmer". The only other who may have been worse was Denis Neilson, the Camden town murderer, who claimed to have killed more, but was only convicted of killing 17 of his homosexual lovers out of guilt and of being outed.

The perfumery industry used to use this factoid, omitting the bit about rats, to sell their over priced mixed of deer musk aka elk smegma, the anal gland scrapings of civet cats, the seminal fluid of beavers and powdered hyrax (an African guinea pig) shit, (for all but one of which they kill the entire animal just to scrape out it's foreskin, bumhole, stomach lining or prostate gland) All to make rich people stink and make a profit.

LenHazell53 comments on May 12, 2021:
This list does not mention the Ethiopian Coptic cannon, the Coptic cannon, the Jerusalem Bible, the Marcion Cannon or the Syriac. All of which are different again, depending on when and where they were compiled. The history of the bible is a mess. When people in the west talk about the "Holy Bible" they are talking almost invariably about the KJV an edited and retranslated Anglican version of the Vulgate Bible dating from 1611, or the Douay Rheims version the Vatican approved edit and translation of the Vulgate from 1582 which has been "revised" countless times, the last time being in 1941. Most RC and CofE members are not aware of differences between their respective version and are completely unaware of all the other canons. MY personal favourite is the pre 2013 The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures used by the Jehovah's witless, which was translated by a committe of seven "scholars" only one of who spoke "modern" Greek, none of who spoke Latin, Aramaic, Hebrew or ancient Greek and is such a joke that in 2013, all copies were withdrawn and replaced with the revised edition, which is basically the KJV having been run through a find and replace program to change every mention of god, Elohim, Adonia and the tetrogram with Jehovah.

However at the premier of Psycho, it was a very cold night and a number of the patrons took pit on the poor fellow and slipped him the odd brandy to keep out the cold. Resulting in his becoming more and more inebriated as the night went on. "Miss Boris Day's car" "Mizzer An-phoney Parkinz's cur" "Miester Donald Unpleasant's car" And then as the highlight of the evening approached he boomed out in clear and ring tones the arrival of the guest of honour. Refrigerate dates from 1530 meaning to cool down, and is an anglicised version of the Latin refrigeratus, past participle of refrigerare to cool or as a noun meaning a cold room utilising either running water and ice or substances such as marble in the time Roman empire to preserve food and cool wine. What today is still called a pantry from Indo European meaning Bread storage room. All words are not made up, most English words for example evolved from earlier words coming from Latin, Greek or their root languages of the Indo Europeans, which themselves came from onomatopoeia giving even new words a pedigree of meaning. True you cannot have an "unreal" word, but you can have a nonsense word that has no inherent meaning, because it has no etymological root. In the UK the official English vocabulary ***is*** determined by the OED (Oxford English dictionary) and is determined by that word's use in popular culture, literature and science over a period of years, it's philological, lexicographical and etymological validity. Each year between 7 and twenty new words are added to the national vocabulary many others are accepted a slang but not as official English words. And I know your corespondent was being facetious, however yes there are records of Latin publication from the time of the empire called **librum De vocabularium** "The Book of a list of all words,"

LenHazell53 comments on May 6, 2021:
It has long been a matter of contention as to whether Machinate came from a connection to the philosopher Machiavelli, much of whose master work "The Prince" is to do with the use of Machinations within the politics of ruling and warfare. Machinate comes from the Latin machinari meaning "to use tactics, to contrive, design, scheme or plot." Machiavelli comes from the Latin machia meaning "To fight or battle" and vello meaning "to pull down, to demolish." so to destroy by war It seems however that Machiavelli was a creation of nominative determinism and that his name popularised the word Machinate which is used in many English translations for the term literally and originally as "the political art" in Italian. The first use of the word machinate dates from the 16th century, as does the life of Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) and the Prince was written in 1513.
