Tim Minchin on Alternative Medicine
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 6, 2021:
Minchin stole this line for his poem Storm (2009) from Penn & Teller's Bullshit (2003), who in turn were paraphrasing their friend Richard Dawkins and credited it to him. "There is no alternative medicine. There is only medicine that works and medicine that doesn't work." Richard Dawkins (2003) A Devil's Chaplain.

I don't feel this is so much a discovery as a labeling. All cooks know that hot water looks and moves differently, has a different texture and taste to cold water, like wise with refrigerated water, it moves more slowly, tastes more refreshing and has a different texture on the tongue. Hot water refracts light differently when poured while making coffee or tea and sparkles with light rather than glares with it as does cold water. Hot water is lighter and always rises above the more dense cold water, heating systems are based on this principle and it is a cliché that a hot bath is better than a cold one if you try to kill yourself by electrocution. None of this video is new, it is simply formalising the knowledge cooks, engineers and farmers have known for millennia

Deliquesce verb (used without object) to melt away.
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 4, 2021:
Not exactly to melt away. To be deliquescent is to have the property of being able to draw (or leach) and hold moisture from your surroundings, even the air, to the point of total saturation. In other words, leave a pile of deliquescent material in a bowl over night and you will return to a bowl of Deliquesce (often dangerously corrosive) chemical solution. It is a very useful property used a lot in both chemical manufacturing and the funeral industry. Lye and quicklime are probably the two most commonly known Deliquescent materials but there are many others

This sort of bickering reminds me of an incident when I was at university, a certain member of my cohort, who was from down south was in the habit of coming to lectures and seminars wearing football shirts. Another member of the same cohort who was local confronted him on the second week of the first semester. "You came in here last week wearing a Hull City shirt," he pointed out. "So what?" said the first guy genuinely surprised at the aggressive tone. "This week you are wearing a Birmingham city shirt, that's SO WHAT!" The rest of us by this time were paying attention, because the second guy sounded fit to burst. "Oh," said the first. "I just like football shirts, they are comfy and I like all the different colours and patterns." The second chap, went red in the face and gritted his teeth. "You cannot do that!" he snarled. "I can't do what?" Asked the guy in the shit as confused as the rest of us. "YOU can't just wear a different football shirt every week just because you like the colour. Don't you understand, you DON'T do that, its not on, team loyalty IS IMPORTANT!" The first guy was puffing and steaming from his ears, his face was red and his fist were clenching. At this point the lecturer entered the room and asked what was going on and the first guy began literally screaming that the shirt guy had to be sent home to change or He was "going to KILL stupid southern ponce". In the end Loud mouth Mc shoutyman was escorted out of the room by security. However that is not the end of the story. Our film studies lecturer told the story to to the head of the sociology department who far from agreeing he had done the right thing **demanded** Shirt guy be called in and ADMONISHED for being deliberately provocative and knowingly causing trouble by wearing varied football tops at a university in a town that was notoriously football mad. The upshot was that Shirt guy left the university and sued for his fees to be returned and ultimately won, Shoutyman was hailed by the other local students as a hero. I told this story to a close friend of mine who was a keen supporter of the local team and who was also a professor of English at Durham university. His reaction astonished me, far from agreeing with me this this whole incident was raving mad, he got very angry and assured me that had he been the lecturer, he would have physically ripped the shirt off Shirtman's back, kicked him out of the class and told him to only come back if and when he made up his mind which team he was going to support or when he had decided to not wear Football tops at all. This was the first time I realised that tribalism is alive and well and deadly in the modern age, and that some people can be brought to the verge of homicidal rage by actions of another that...

Is gender assigned at birth or is it learned through nurturing and environment?
LenHazell53 comments on May 29, 2021:
Physical biological sex is assigned as a convenience at birth according to genitalia. Sexual identity develops naturally a little later it and would seem as hetero and Homo sexual trait appear at a very young age. Gender identity similarly becomes more marked and developed with the onset of puberty though often appears years before. Subtle personal sexual/gender preferences (personal turn ons, fetishes etc) seem to come in to play as personality develops in the same way we decide which tastes we prefer and colours we like. Just an opinion based on personal observation. All that aside it is no one else's business how an individual decides to identify or how they feel happy living their lives so long as it is not actively and directly hurting anyone else

LenHazell53 comments on May 27, 2021:
It is always easier to spot your own faults in others and project your own feeling of guilt on to them in the form of righteous anger than to face up to your own guilt and be angry at your self. The same basic principle applies equally to civilizations, societies and their respective histories. All peoples throughout time have believed that they are the greatest form of humanity and that everyone else is inferior, fit only to be used as beasts of burden and in some cases so inferior as to merit removal from the gene pool, to avoid weakening the species. This is how religion, politics, ideology, cast systems and even marriage came about. It is also why revolutions and wars happen, you can only be told you are at the bottom of the heap for so long before realizing it is a lie and fighting back. This is why oppression is not practiced by the wise, because to know base human nature is universal IS wisdom, and what you do to one today, can be done by him or her to you tomorrow.

Politicians have all become obsessed with "the big lie" Say anything, repeat it ad nauseam, refuse to credit any and all evidence and facts to the contrary, and then declare a victory for truth and common sense. It is politics made simple for a moron public who learned life from The Simpsons, that no matter what happens, or how bad, by this time next week everything will be comfortingly back to normal and everything just carries on.
