Taken basically the Zombie is alive but dead and in this sense is the ultimate consumer, it produces nothing other than other Zombies, but consumes everything in a literally mindless fashion.
Therefore it is a symbol for the modern consumerist society that values nothing cultural (art, music, philosophie) and simple consumes ravenously to satisfy it's hedonist gluttony until there is nothing left.

I am not saying it was not a well made movie, it most certainly is, how ever the Author of the script passing it off as an original script and being honoured for an actual of plagiarism when he could have simply called it an adaptation is despicable.
However it is not the first time and likely won't be the last Ruthless People (1986) has long been established to be an uncredited remake of Too Many Crooks (1959) even going so far as to steal whole sections of the script verbatim.
Poltergeist (1982) was forced to acknowledge that it was an uncredited adaptation of Richard Matheson's short story Little girl Lost (1962) settled by spielberg out of court.

I am not saying it was not a well made movie, it most certainly is, how ever the Author of the script passing it off as an original script and being honoured for an actual of plagiarism when he could have simply called it an adaptation is despicable.
