Dido DAI-do Part of speech: noun Origin: Unknown, early 19th century 1: A mischievous trick ...
LenHazell53 comments on Jan 25, 2021:
Dido was the first queen of Carthage famous for her wit and wisdom. When she declared herself queen one of her enemies told her sarcastically that she could have as much of his city as she could encompass in a single sheep's hide, she had him sign a legally binding contract to that effect and took away the sheep hide he offered. Dido sheered it and spun the wool in to a thread of great length, the sliced the hide in to thongs so thin that when combined with the wool made a string of length enough to surround the entire city. Hence a Dido or Didoism being a clever trick.

LenHazell53 comments on Jan 25, 2021:
Rutger Bregman completely missed the point, Lord of the flies is not about children or there nature it is about ideology verses reason and an attempt to explain why political and religious extremism reasserts itself time after time, no matter how much society in general relies on science and logic.

This is a variation of the Brothers Grimm's retelling of Aesop's fable "The Years of Man" In the original Greek version man takes in a Horse, an Ox and a dog in to his own home to spare them the harsh winter, in return for the hospitality each animal gives a sacrifice to the man. The horse gives ten years of his life to the man for athletics and play, the ox gives ten years of strength and stamina for hard work and providing, the dog gives ten years for him to be a protector of his home and family, leaving the man his own twenty years for childhood and retirement.

I have had through out my life many nicknames, many commenting on my physical build and featured (Springs for example because I have very curly hair, and others from school some rather unspeakable, racist and cruel.) I call myself Len because as my name sake in the "The Big Bang Theory" says Leonard has "Nerd" in it and my late best friend always called me Lennie (the only person I ever allowed to do so). My older son (formerly my daughter) calls me Grumpy because she says I look like the guy who plays Grumpy in "once upon a time" and my daughter in law calls me Papa Smurf, because my beard was far much more luxuriant when I first met her.
Nothing to add.

Why Do the Brits Call the U.K. ‘Blighty’? | Anglophenia | BBC America
LenHazell53 comments on Jan 20, 2021:
Well not the explanation I was given from my Great, Great, Aunt who lived through the Victorian age and the first world war. (She died in her 90's in the late 1970's) Her explanation was Blighty came from a mix of the word Blithe meaning happy or joyous and the then common girls name Blythe which is also the name of a river in Warwickshire and at least three towns in the UK all meaning beautiful and tranquil. (There are also towns with this name in Austrailia, the USA, south Africa and New Zealand) Cockney soldiers apparently mispronounced Bithe/Blythe as Blyt-he and the the beautiful idealised homeland became Blyt-he Brighty (over pronouncing the T) The truth probably lays somewhere between.

An easily identifiable symbol to rally too. 2. Specific terms/ code words or euphemisms exclusive to the group. 3. Powerful and continuing expressions of belonging to a chosen or special race. 4. Praising of a Mythological golden age of your ideology that give rights of rule by dynastic or spiritual heritage to all members and especially to leaders 5. Being included in and party to sacred mysticism denied to less worthy others 6. Physical Body Worship combined with reminders of spiritual unworthiness 7. Disdain for the importance of human rights especially those of outsiders 8. Suppression of the rights of the individual in favour of the group and the greater good 9. Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause 10. The supremacy of the physical and or spiritual power broker 11. Institutionalised sexism 12. A controlled mass media 13. Obsession with internal security and or secrecy 14. Religion and ruling elite tied together 15. Power of corporations protected 16. Power of labour suppressed or eliminated 17. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts 18. Obsession with crime and punishment 19. Rampant cronyism and corruption 20. A pretence at democracy including Fraudulent elections or sustaining of the leadership
