LenHazell53 comments on Jul 28, 2020:
The problem being of course that to those contemporary with the ratification "people" did not mean "people" as we understand the word today, just as democracy in the days of its creation, was in no way comparable with democracy as we use the term today. It was largely taken as read that those legally recognized as "people" were as defined by Aristotle, that being, up until the mid 20th century, defined as white or indigenous men over the age of majority (usually around thirty) who owned land or property and were judged to be mentally competent enough to maintain a regular income.

LenHazell53 comments on Jul 27, 2020:
I agree the cross is more violent, it was in the context of Christian use, a device of death by torture. However, both the crucifix and the gun are both inventions that have the reraison d'etre of killing (even if consequently they have had other symbolism forced on them, in the same way a toddler hammers a jigsaw piece in to the wrong space insisting it can fit.) Anyone who picks up a weapon, be it a bow, a sword, a javelin/spear, or a gun is training them self to use it efficiently and in the context of the weapon efficiency means effectively lethal. My father trained me to be a marks man as a boy, first with 177 caliber air rifles and pistols and later with actual fire arms, as soon as I was old enough I sold my guns and in the forty odd years since have never touched a gun again. Never will and I have no desire to be in a situation where I am asked to associate on familiar terms with some one who feels it is appropriate to publicly display affection for instruments of death.

Millions erroneously think ‘Secular’ is synonymous with ‘non-religious’.
LenHazell53 comments on Jul 24, 2020:
You are confusing Secularism with Ecumenicalism, the philosophy of seeking common ground between different view points, when used theologically it seek to bridge differences between all religions and no religion concentrating on shared values rather than quibbling over details ( and before anyone jumps in telling me I am wrong I am talking about Ecumenicalism NOT Ecumenism which is limited to the same idea but limited ONLY to varying Christian Denominations as in the Ecumenical movement of the RC church)

LenHazell53 comments on Jul 23, 2020:
Assuming she ever existed at all, there are only two ways to give birth, one is the usual way by sexual intercourse and the other is to give birth to your own fraternal twin absorbed in Utero and developed later at the onset of puberty. The second option is incredibly rare, less so with identical twins, but not impossible. Of course there is always the Erich von Däniken theory of artificial insemination by an ancient alien, for what that is worth. However given that he existed, Jesus would not be the first "virgin Birth" to a mum claiming divine intervention rather than admit to premarital sex or even rape, especially when the punishment for a rapist at the time was to pay thirty shekels and then being forced to marry his victim.
Let's see what we get with this.

Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel lament going to Babylon, Daniel becomes a lion tamer. Loads of weird prophets moan a lot. Jesus is born, talks, does conjuring tricks, dies, comes back, goes away, so his friends write letters. John moves to Patmos, eats some magic mushrooms and sees the apocalypse. The End

Responsibility... What happened?
LenHazell53 comments on Jul 18, 2020:
Western society used to be based on a common consensus of rights and responsibilities, actions and consequences. Then came the 1980s and YUPPIE (Young upwardly-mobile Professional Person) mentality. Thatcher in the UK, Reagan in the US both preaching that greed was good, material things = success. The idea that you were a part of society contributing and receiving went out of the window replaced with the idea that society was a competition to be won by giving as little as possible and getting as much as possible. You no longer bought a house to be a home, you bought a house as an investment, you no longer took a job to do a job, you took a job to climb as high and fast as you could with no thoughts for you colleagues other than to push them aside as "losers" so that when you reach the captains chair you can take all you can and desert the scuttled ship leaving it to sink with all hands. Compassion became a weakness, kindness a foolishness, loyalty a nonsense to be given to no one but yourself and your immediate family (until such time as they become a threat). A whole generation of people were born in to or grew up in this mentality and grew up thinking it was normal to a generation of parents born in to the *Doctor Spock* school of parenting where "The child is always right" The first Result of which was two generations of greedy entitled children from upper and middle class homes who have no conception of responsibility, but think they know all their rights, which basically amount to *"Let this be the whole of the law do as thou wilt"* whose response to a crisis or an accident is to call a lawyer in case they can sue, who have no actual loyalty to anyone, who live by the doctrine of *win at all costs* and who despise any one they see as a looser (he worst social faux pas). The second result of which is a desperate and angry under class, who see their lives and position in society as *unfair* and so sublimate by taking what they feel they are owed rather than earning it because they have the assumed right to do so in a society where failure to do so will label them as losers, who find strength in guns or numbers and see crime violence and sport as their only exit in to the *real* world. In either case taking responsibility for anything you do is a luxury that can not be afforded, blame must always be shifted elsewhere because to be responsible is to to be wrong, to be wrong is to be a loser and to be a loser is not possible for a social winner.

Dear lifelong atheists, how do you see yourself within the universe?
LenHazell53 comments on Jul 16, 2020:
I am not a "life long" atheist but have been an atheist for many years now. I am a self awareness within an environment, my perception of which is limited by my reliance upon my sensory perceptions and on occasions the assistance of technology. I see no point in attempting to go beyond those perceptions except when something outside of the range of my perceptions can have a perceived consequence upon my well being or perceived physicality. I assume from my perceptions that I am part of a greater whole but I acknowledge that I may have been deceived in to thinking this. However since I am unable to prove that deception and since it's reality or unreality have no baring or consequence upon my continued existence I am content for it to remain an hypothesis.
Even agnostics have a belief system.
LenHazell53 comments on Jul 16, 2020:
This is why I dislike intensely the term agnostic, it is wishy washy, open to "fast and loose" interpretation and rarely is it actually used to mean what it etymologically represents. It is a fence sitting, hedge betting, cop out as far as I am concerned, likewise spirituality is a nonsense word that means whatever the speaker at that time wants it to means and immediately takes away a common frame of reference from any discussion being had. English is such a wonderfully diverse and precise language with words either inherent or co-opted to mean exactly what you want to say, but is 90% ignored 90% of the time for fear of actually making oneself understood or, as is more often the case, looking "to clever for your own good" as my mother was fond of saying.
