It is therefore a description of the specific indefinite article used in relation to a verb not the action of being indefinite or indeterminate. It is a deliberately misleading tense in rhetoric indicating that something has had something happen to it, but with out specifying where or when or what the outcome was or even if the action was completed. It has very little meaning in English as we have only two indefinite articles ("a" and "an" ), or as in a America where "an" is hardly used at all just one.

What a ridiculous word, with an equally ridiculous origin. Compathy dates from 1925 and appears to have been a joke word used among the "bright young things" because one of their number at one Ivy League university one night could not recall the word empathy when discussing the phrase "misery loves company" in the play Dr Faustus. Some were arguing that miserable people need company in order to cheer up, others were arguing that misery attracts miserable people. To illustrate a point one student argued that only people as miserable as Faustus himself could empathise with the Doctors plight but drunkenly could not recall the word, so crammed together company and empathy in to one portmanteau word compathy. This caused much hilarity and mockery and at first lead to compathy being used like thingabob or whatchmacallit as a replacement word for something one cannot bring to mind. Unfortunately one bright spark used it in a published article as a synonym for empathy and it ended up in the Merriman Webster dictionary and was dully copied in the Collins dictionary. It is not in any other dictionary, though the OED.com does reference it as an American synonym for empathy under consideration since 1997 when it appeared in “Compathy: The Contagion of Physical Distress.” Journal of Advanced Nursing 26, no. 4 (October 1997)" by American Nurses and visiting lecturers Janice M. Morse and Carl Mitcham. As of 2021 it is still "under consideration" but lack of use and redundancy probably means it will never make it in.
