Ragamuffin comments on Feb 18, 2019:
The "taken from other cultures" part is way overstated. The Bible is the most influential book in the world. It is the foundation of western thought. The King James Bible is the best literary work in the English language. I love the Bible. I just don't believe a word of it.
LenHazell53 replies on Feb 19, 2019:
"The "taken from other cultures" part is way overstated." No it really isn't, in spite of the Bible being highly influential almost all of it is none original and comes from the mythology of earlier more advanced cultures. It certainly is not "the foundation of western thought." and in fact its adherents spent centuries supressing western thought as dangerous to biblical teachings. It is basically the same as saying "Stairway to heaven" is the most influential rock song ever, despite the fact that it is a total rip off of "Taurus by spirit" Lead Zeplin were Spirits opening act on tour for years and had to settle out of court with Randy California's estate. Often the copy is more famous than the original.

@OpposingOpposum and such is the difference between *the world* as we have created for ourselves under the mask of gods and and divine creators as opposed to *the earth* a cog in the machine of the universe where we happen to have evolved without choice, without destiny, without any purpose other than to be, observe and measure reality for our own utterly flawed understanding. It is possible to understand and sympathise with the why of fantasy, without approving of it, though that is cold comfort when they are burning you at the stake for pointing it out.

@Geoffrey51 Muggeridge was a terrible man, who among other things took it upon himself to publicise the work of an unknown Albanian nun named Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, a despicable woman who believed that medicine interferes with the divine plan of god and so set up "houses of the dying" all over India to facilitate the painful end of life for thousands, even tens of thousands in abject squalor who need never have died at all. She also given the opportunity at the height of the AIDS crisis, spoke at the united nations to make a plea that condoms were a greater sin than murder and should be outlawed internationally. Thanks to the concerted urging of Muggeridge this monster was made a saint and her reputation fixed for ever in the public conscience as St.Teresa of Calcutta, better know by her nom de gare as Mother Teresa.

@Marionville I watched the series from beginning to end, and what most people took to be grumpiness I always saw as well justified exasperation with the sheer idiocy of those around him or other peoples expectation that Victor should put up with shoddy work and slipshod service when he is paying for it. However on a number of occasions victor saves peoples lives, or well being, gives freely of his time to help and spent his entire working life protecting people and property, and as is revealed in the classic one on one episode between he and his wife has had a life touched by tragedy that has utterly traumatised his wife and left him her secret carer. The series is exceptional for it's writing and performances, but is comparable to "Till death us do part" in reverse, Alf was a mockery who was taken seriously, Victor is a serious character taken to be a mockery.

I point people to this group when I am in other Atheist communities, BUT I have to say, the word agnostic does put off a lot of hard core atheists and anti-theists. I joined and learned to love it here, but only because I referred here by some one I trusted at atheist Republic
LenHazell53 replies on Feb 8, 2019:
@creative51 True, but I had a hard time at first, because before coming here most self professed agnostics I knew were fence sitters, wishy washy Pascal wagering sorts as unwilling to accept reason as most theists. Since I 've been here I found some simply use the term agnostic as a euphemism and are in all but name atheists, mainly it seems because it is so hard to be openly atheist in the USA, but agnosticism seem to be viewed with less suspicion. Here in the UK it is just seen as indecisive to be agnostic, for the most part.

What gets me about conspiracy theories is I have never come across any organisation that efficient. Really can you think of any time a secret could be kept by more than 10 people, for ever?
LenHazell53 replies on Feb 8, 2019:
@273kelvin I did not cite those examples you did, I was simply making a point that if someone in power wants to cover something up, they can and do with only the very minimum of confidants, J E Hoover is a prime example, his staff did what he told them without question including spying on ordinary citizens, celebrities and politicians, when he died it was found he had thousands of personal hidden files on thousands of people, many of whom he had been blackmailing for years to stay in his job and to get dirt on others, to this day it is thought doubtful anyone else was directly involved and if they were we don't know who they were. You only have to look at the corruption of the Catholic church to see how actual conspiracies can be covered up for decades or even centuries The Magdalene laundries for example, even the church itself "claims" to have known nothing about the abuse, mistreatment and even murders carried on inside those wall and blames it on a conspiracy of Nuns. There dozens of conspiracies that have proven to be right or true in the fullness of time, the mega conspiracies you mention are the big lies, meant to distract from the small truths that governments, religious authorities and institutions geared for the benefit of the very rich want tarred with the same brush.

It does not need to be kept secret by many people, just one or two in power then a lot of others who find the lie so appealing or are so slavishly devoted to those who know it is a lie that that they will never question it.
