Biologically, we humans are forced to perceive an existence where we only have our limited senses to...

"we lack the capacity to perceive reality beyond our human biologic limitations." Necessarily things that are beyond our physical limitations are irrelevant to us and there for may as well to all intents and purposes NOT exist. They cannot inter-react with us nor we with them, even if they do ...

@rabidazzle "if we ever develop technology to expand the base perception of reality we all share." To what possible end? What use would it be? You postulate a machine that would allow the detection of things of things we cannot otherwise perceive or interact with, and that can neither perceive or interact with us. The effect is pretty much useless and the artificial detection could still only translate those outsiders in terms we could perceive so would only be a shadow, a representation of what they actually were or are so even knowledge is advanced no further than saying we know know, something that can be represented as a picture or a sound exist outside of our sphere of influence. HP Lovecraft played about with this idea in his story "from Beyond" in that fictional instance it did not end well for any concerned.

@genessa No I understand, but moral panic sells news papers, about twenty years ago the whole area was embroiled in the biggest child sex abuse case ever and the papers and TV made such a fuss over it that all the rent-a-gob wanna be vigilantes here abouts have been on the hunt ever since. It turned out in the end it was two local child services doctors who were diagnosing almost every child referred to them as an abuse victim, but by the time this was discovered a culture of caution set in, talking to an unaccompanied child who is not directly related to you or who is not under your guardianship is a big no no especially if you are male. (my first aid instructor even told us not to administer first aid to minors with out first getting permission from a parent and being chaperoned. It's a mad world.

@genessa Again maybe it is local, but English, people, English men especially find it highly suspicious if a stranger talks to you, they are usually either after something, trying to sell you something or trying to distract you while someone else picks your pocket. I worked in retail for years, friendly strangers who want to chat are usually up to something, or have a partner who is emptying the shelves in to a sack.

@genessa, @misternatureboy Don't get me wrong, I'll talk to people in social situations, or at places of shared interest, but if I am out alone, I am invariably doing something and so am busy, I don't particularly want to know about you unless you have something interesting to say and I have asked you about it. If you are a cab driver I'd rather you concentrated on driving instead of telling me who you once had in the back of the cab. I have a very low bullshit tolerance, even less so for trivialities and small talk. I know what the weather is like, i am out in it I know buses are always late No you don't know me from somewhere or else you would know who I am No I don't want a Sweet, I am sugar intolerant I am not interested in someone's Aunt sally who once went to a hospital for a check up and came home with her arm in a cast, and when they removed the cast there was just her fingers and her shoulder and the arm was missing.

LenHazell53 comments on Sep 18, 2018:
Oh for F sake, I am getting sick of this constant victim mentality from everyone, everyone wants a bit of the sympathy pie, because they are men, women, religion, of an ethnicity, gender variation, have an unpopular hair colour, body size, height, or are so without problems that it is a problem. ...
LenHazell53 replies on Sep 18, 2018:
@orange_girl You did notice that I did not say women alone, I addressed my comments to those who use attention seeking victim mentality generally. There was nothing flippant in my statement, and having been married twice, being the father of a daughter, being the uncle of a niece, grandfather of two grand daughters, who I have raised, having been a son, grandson and nephew I have no shortage of point of view of women's lived experiences and I can say with out a doubt that this kind of playing the martyr is the experience only of a minority. My niece was badly and violent attacked by a man, I was a victim of spousal abuse for five years, we neither of us blame or expect such behaviour from all members of the opposite sex and therefore do not judge someone just by their gender. My Daughter is managing director of a firm of security guards of all genders and sexual orientation running her own successful business she takes no sexism from anyone and will not tolerate false claims of it from any one, she is a strong independent successful woman of whom I am justly proud and deals with stupidity immediately and definitely without resorting to whinging and whimpering about being a helpless victim of nasty rough men, and refusing to come back until they are made to go away, in point of fact she is more likely to throw them out until they learn to stop being childish. SO before you throw glib statements like "I suppose it's this kind of flippant attitude toward's women's lived experiences" at me or any other men, you would do well to remember we too have a life time of lived experiences with women we love dearly and who love us in return. Thank you for your attention if you have bothered to read this post to the end.

@mordant Depending on which strain of Buddhism you are addressing "on paper " yes they do and no they don't. Most denominations do acknowledge supernatural beings, ghosts, spirits, the equivalent of saints and Minor deities. There is no all powerful monotheist god, true, however if you are willing to go along the lines of the Asgardian gods, or polytheistic pantheons then in their hierarchy of mystical beings the Buddhists have their fair share.

The Beatles existed as a band in their own right and wrote their own music, so though definitely a band of boys, were not a "boy Band" in the industry sense.

Should never have been put up on a government building in the first place, as a person of no religion it would have made me feel uneasy too, it basically say Christian lore (as opposed to secular laws) practiced here, and to some one who reads the bible and knows what Biblical law actually entails that is pretty damn scary.

It's hard to make an argument against posting In God We Trust. It is the national motto. Let's argue to go back to the old motto: "E Pluribus Unum." Then we can get rid of the god thing as a violation of the Establishment Clause.

Separation of church and state? By the way the only place "E Pluribus Unum." can be found in actual Latin literature from the roman empire is in a recipe for salad dressing.

@lerlo Actually no, a man threatening a woman would be taken as abuse, wife beating and no subject for comedy, but a woman beating a man hilarious, Want to know how I know that, because the policeman who I went to for help when my first wife beat me with a pan and broke my hand *fucking laughed!* I went through five and a half years of physical and mental abuse and received no help or support at all, because a woman beating a man was either funny or a sign that I was not a "real man" because I never hit her back. So thanks for your comment.

@cmadler To people who actually think about these things such as you and I you are right of course, but why then for instance are all films in English eligible for academy awards in the main categories, and yet ***all*** other films are lumped together in to the best Foreign Language Film Category. Most non English speaking films never make it in to an UK or USA mainstream cinema release because people will not watch a film with subtitles or not featuring Western Stars. My point was about general perception not geographical reality.

Tribalism runs strong and deep in the psyche of homo sapiens, men bursting in to tears of joy at a victory and the relief of tension leading up to it or tears of frustration and regret at defeat is a perfectly understandable reaction. It is utterly different emotionally to tears of empathy and emotional upheaval experienced when observing a drama or listening to music. There will be something in your life that you associate yourself so strongly to that you can be moved to tears or emotional outbursts for it's triumphs and failures.

@GuyKeith Hollywood should stop trying to remake Japanese movies, they always get it wrong. One exception is The Grudge 3 which is not a remake but a genuine attempt to tie the Japanese Franchise and the American franchise together as two parts of one overall story arc. It still fails but is a good effort. PS they definitely should stop trying to do it with French films too, the US version of Taxi is an abomination.

@Paul4747 It is far dafter than that, especially after the church was forced to reveal a few years ago that all the golden plates rubbish was a lie and Smith actually translated the book of Mormon using a magic peepstone that he also used for treasure hunting. Smith would sit with his head in his hat reading and translating from the stone that glowed in the depths. apparently he never needed the plates at all (shocker). The three heavens stuff does not come from the book of Mormon but from another LDS scripture called the Book of Abraham. Smith got this one years later and translated it from "sacred Egyptian papyri " he bought from a travelling Mummy show. These Papyri still exist and have been authenticated by modern Egyptology as being nothing of the sort, they are in fact common funerary texts from the second century AD and have nothing to do with Abraham, the Star Kolob (where god lives) or the three heavens known as the telestial (for non Mormon riff raff), terrestrial (for poor Mormons) and celestial (for super duper Mormons who have paid enough tithing) kingdoms. The church gets around this by saying Smith made an inspired translation not a direct one, despite having Smith's translation diary and lexicon)
