These third wavers are a disgrace to a cause I have been involved with since the age of eighteen and have made the word feminism a label of shame and ridicule.

@Laurastevens Darn you caught me out, the reason I really don't want to talk about this IS because the evidence of God existence is overwhelming, only it is not the God Yahweh, it is the one true God the Great God Om, and all your evidence blasphemes against him and his prophet Sir Terry Pratchett peace be upon him by attributing it to your false God. You say nature is proof of god, I say proof of Om, you say the ontological argument, I say proof of Om, the cosmological argument, proof of Om, Pascal's wager, wager in favour of Om, answers to Prayers, Om is generous and answers all prayers, addressed to him or not. Woe unto the blasphemers, who shall at the second coming of Sir Terry be trampled under the feet of the mighty Librarian Ook, and battered relentlessly for all times with copies of the holy texts held in the chronicles of the discworld. Do you see what I am getting at here? All your evidence for God can be applied to ANY god and none of them are provably real, it proves nothing. Cutting and pasting proves only that you are not thinking for yourself, try it, it's great.

@TheMiddleWay it is a requirement of believers to "spread the word" "to evangelise" "to bring people to god" and to take every opportunity to do so, usually under the self deluded idea that idea that "god" has given them the opportunity to do so. It is the same mentality that draws believers to join forums like this, feeling it is their duty to "save" unfortunate lost sheep. I say this in the position of having once been a highly successful Mormon missionary, stake missionary and priest. All it is evidence for is some kind of naturally occuring phenomena that requires further scientific investigation, in order to explain it's true nature and purpose (if any). To say ghosts exist therefore God is a classic argument from ignorance.

It is very much dependant on how you define a ghost. If you are talking about a disembodied spirit or soul or surviving personality earth bound and attached to an object person or place, then I very much doubt the existence of the same. However the possibillity of physic impressions manifesting ...
LenHazell53 replies on Apr 9, 2018:
@paul1967 Well I'm not sure if there are online articles, because most of my research comes from pre internet days, but I know the theory was first advanced by Victorian metaphysician Elliott O'Donnell, became very popular in the 1960's as the "Stone Tape" theory (after the film by Nigel Neil of the same name) and it has been written about by parapsychologist Hans Holzer after trying to debunk a number of so called Spirit photographs lead him to theorise that psychic residue might show up on photographs in the same way human/animal auras become visible in spectrographs. Such reported "reception events" are notable in being different from alleged hauntings in that they are repetitive, do not communicate or react to stimuli and in many cases continue even after architectural changes are made, such as the cliche of walking through walls, walking/floating on long demolished stairways, or only the upper half of a recording showing after a floor has been raised.
Why being a Christian is Grrrrreat
mordant comments on Apr 7, 2018:
Far truer for liberal Christians than for fundamentalists, and hyperbolically over-generalized in places. But still ... pretty insightful. Some of it depends on definitions, too. Technically, every Christian has to "believe in" Christianity and understand what it is. But the vetting for such ...
LenHazell53 replies on Apr 7, 2018:
Which is why I included the part about hating other forms of Christianity. Yes there are fundamentalist out there but it has been my experience that even fundamentalists at a lay level will not have actually read or studied the bible, they will have read the parts (or had them read to them) that back up the practices of their own schism but will have been actively discouraged from reading the rest. Many Catholics will still only attend a mass in Latin, because they still feel it is sinful to be able to understand the priest, and that too much knowledge is dangerous to faith, a view shared by the Mormons who stress that asking questions is good, so long as you only ask faith promoting questions and accept the official answers from Utah without question. Only about one in fifty Christians know about or believe in the doctrine of Parousia and instead think the day of judgement is your entrance exam for heaven. Anglicans and Catholics will know basically what the Creed is (Apostles or Nicene) most other denominations won't know it refers to a specific document but will have an idea it is a definition of generic Christianity. Most Christian will know they were Christened but don't know Christening involves baptism and think it is just a naming ceremony. Baptism is generally seen as something other religions do at 8, 15 or when you join some of the more fringe sects. In countries like Ireland or Scotland in the UK the major defining characteristic of being Christian is based on NOT being the "enemy" denomination.

Anyone here read the DUNE series of books by Frank Herbert?
LenHazell53 comments on Apr 4, 2018:
It was really annoying that George Lucas managed to get away with stealing so much of these books for Star wars that the film version had to practically invent a new subplot, to fill in the blanks and still got accused of "ripping off" Star wars.
LenHazell53 replies on Apr 5, 2018:
@jperlow I'm not saying Dune was the only place Lucas "drew inspiration" from, just that Frank Herbert's Lawyers identified 115 point of similarity in the original trilogy and the Dune Saga, which was enough for Lucas Film to come to an unspecified agreement with Herbert, that resulted in Lych's film version of Dune having no mention of the Jaba like duke Leto II, the sound weapons being added and the force like powers of Paul Muad'Dib being hidden, Paul sister being relegated to one tiny appearance at the end of the film so as not to be too Leia like and the villainous Padishah emperor almost being written out altogether along with Duncan Idaho and the Bene Gesserit power of the Voice being only used once so as not to show them up as being too like the Jedi. If you look up the adaptation of Lucas' original script for the first Star Wars movie, which was published as a comic book mini series a few years ago the similarities are even more startlingly obvious.

ErichZannIII comments on Nov 25, 2017:
I've met some Mormons. They seem like pretty nice people.
LenHazell53 replies on Apr 4, 2018:
@ErichZannIII Mormon beliefs are "a little bit out there" in the same way that Hitler was "a little bit " right wing. For example if you tell your children the greatest man who ever lived was the prophet Joseph Smith, and you still believe this when you know from your own Church literature that he married a fourteen year old girl after threatening her with death by an angel with a flaming sword if she refused, you have not just got belief that are "a little bit out there" Uniquely Mormon beliefs range from insane to downright evil. Mormon prophets have declared over the years that Interracial couples should be killed on the spot (Brigham Young) Cane was cursed with eternal life and is now Bigfoot (Spencer W Kimball) The civil rights movement was a commie plot (Ezra Taft Benson) Men can become Gods (Ezra Snow) Education is a bad idea (John Taylor) That Children of Gay marriage are banned from church membership till the age of 18 and even then only if they disavow their parents "lifestyle" and move out of their home. (Thomas S Monson)
I’m astounded.

What is your proof that the universe exists outside of your own consciousness?
LenHazell53 replies on Apr 4, 2018:
Well to start with if solipsism is true, then why am I me and not the god of this universe, why would I dream up a world where people are telling me I should worship something else. But on a less flippant note, the existences of other languages would seem to indicate that I am not the only thing in existence, since I don't understand them and they don't understand me without a third party interpreter. Likewise I can remember not knowing things, but can also recall other people knowing them before I did, this at least indicates these concepts did not come from me, but from sources outside of me.

Where to begin? Well as the caterpillar said to Alice, start at the beginning, go on till the end and then stop: The Law of Teleology. There is no such thing, teleology is a philosophical and theological methodology, largely abandoned since the 17th century by the former discipline and seen as an embarrassment by the latter since the 19th century. Teleology is the study of design or purpose in natural phenomena No it isn't. In Philosophy it is the attempt to define things by their purpose rather than their origin, in theology it is the attempt to show that the world was made for man rather than that man evolved to fit with the world, ie. the purpose of the world is to benefit man. . This law of science That is simply either a lie or foolishness resulting from having been lied to. Teleology is not even a scientific principle, theory or hypothesis it is certainly NOT a law. You raise an interesting point, who decides what is a "proper" religion and what is not? I recall a movement in the UK in the 1980s to ban children from attending spiritualist church meetings on these grounds claiming it was tantamount to abuse, suddenly churches and religions that had condemned spiritualism as satanic banded together to defend it, realising what the establishment of such a precedent would do to their own congregations. Nothing ever came of the movement.
