This word is very old and dates from Chaucer. It is a mix of the phrase choke-full, meaning eating so much you might choke on you own vomit, and a navel term for a block and tackle used for hauling up sails. In the 14th century a new form of "block and tackle" was invented using three or four pullies instead of one held in close proximity (called a block) literally halving the work load, this device also included a locking pin known as a choke, (because it was jammed in to a hole) that meant the rope (or sheet) did not have to be tied off, see @TheGreatShadow 's post above). known colloquially as a choke-a-block it revolutionize sailing.

Yes that reminds me of the similar tale of of a good man who goes to heaven having never been religious in his life, to find a nice peace full place. Being shown about by an angel he meets Rabbi's, Imams, Buddhist monks and Hindu pujaris all of who are perfectly happy and chatting to one another in perfect peace. Finally the man and the angel come upon a high walled enclosure that goes on for miles. "we must be very quiet passing here" says the Angel. "Why's that?" asks the man "This is where the catholics live, and they get very cross if they realise they are not the only ones here."

LenHazell53 comments on Apr 17, 2020:
The Satanic Temple is tax exempt because it is a recognized and registered charity, not because it is a religion. There is a theory that the semi precious stone was named for the poisonous plant the *sardonion* literally meaning the plant from Sardinia, which famously caused horrendous muscle contractions in the face giving the victim a wide eyes huge smile (Think Joker Venom) before killing them and leaving them with a fixed evil looking grinning corpse. So sardonyx is onyx of Sardinia because it appears to have convulsed in to smile lines. This is also the root of the word Sardonic to laugh scornfully or in mockery of someone else's misfortunes

NONCE (1) - Adjective.
LenHazell53 comments on Apr 14, 2020:
Meaning number two was pseudo cockney rhyming slang for a Ponce, the British word for a pimp, especially for male prostitutes or child sex traffickers, by the mid-sixties it mainly meant the latter and and or a pædophile. Replacing Ponce with nonce was created by the writers (Clements and La Frenais) of "Poridge" a 1970's sit com set in Slade Prison. Not being allowed to use swear words on the BBC the writers created their own curses and most have now entered the language owing to the popularity of the show. Naff replaced Fuck, Nonce for Ponce (though this one had been used in it's original form on Steptoe and son ten years before) BarStool was used for Bastard, though this one was allowed in later seasons, Nerk for Cxnt, and spunker for wanker. The word Naff incidentally was invented by London homosexuals as part of the polari code language they used to avoid arrest, it meant a straight man.

Trump has constantly self abnegated himself from all responsibility for the state of this crisis in the USA, and recently has been completely ignoring the whole idea of the "United" states Federal government, and has foisted off responsibilities for action and inaction on to state governors and city mayors, refusing to step up and blaming them for not doing so. He has in effect broken the union, ended the federation and declared all 50 states simple oblasts of the Washington DC empire, obligated to pay tribute to the God Emperor Trump with no obligation upon his part to reciprocate. Depending upon how this situation plays out, depending upon the consequences, the death toll and just how much comes to light in the aftermath, it could well lead too the end of the USA as is. There maybe demands to seal off states, there may be demands to secede from the union, claims of negligence and even crimes against humanity. One thing is for certain Trump himself will carry not only the shame of his impeachment, but the same of abandoning his own people for the rest of his life.

My Paternal Grandfather was Jewish and it is called passover because the angel of death "Passed over" the houses whose door post were painted with the blood of a lamb and so were spared the death of the first born. The whole story of the plagues is screwed up, because as the Torah admits GOD hardened the heart of the pharaoh so that he would not let the Jews go free no matter how many plagues where visited on Egypt until the death of the first born. SO god was on the one hand demanding the release of "his" People and punishing the Egyptians for NOT letting them go, while at the same time forcing their King to defy him and bring about more plagues. Even after the plague of the first born, gawd again hardened the heart of pharaoh and sent him after the Jews just so god could kill them too by drowning them in the red sea. This is the Torah's version of a loving god and responsible actions by same.
